where did you go to college?

Wow, seeing what some of you owe in loans is eye opening. I went to a state school and tuition at the time was probably around $2500 a year plus books and other supplies. My education was a bargain but I also lived at home and missed out on the whole big college experience.

Re: where did you go to college?

  • DH and I both went to Oklahoma State, an in state school for us.  What cost us was my semester of vet school at $13,500 (decided it was too expensive for the proposed salary) and his Graphic Design senior year decision to start the Architecture program, so he basically went twice.

  • I got my associates degree at a community college and paid cash each semester for it.  I think tuition was somehwere areound 800-900 dollars for full time, plus books.  Luckily my dad paid my rent and insurance, but I worked full time, some times up to three jobs, to pay for everything else.  I went to East Tennessee State Univ for my BSN and I think the tuition at the time (ca 2003-5) was 5500 dollars a year.  I went for 2 1/2 years.  That is what my loan is for.  Hopefully I will have it paid of in the next 5 or 6 years, but I have no problem paying it down slowly since the interest rate will never change.  I have until 2021 to pay it off.

  • I too went to a state college and saved by living at home. I don't feel I missed out on too much by taking this route.

  • I went to a private university that gave out great scholarships so it was pretty cheap overall.  I think I came out with maybe $15k in loans total for 4 years (compared to $120k if I had paid full price).  DH went to a state university and came out with I think around $25k in loans for 4 years.  We were lucky enough to have great jobs very quickly and paid the loans off within around 2 years.

  • I went to an out of state private college that wasn't TOO terribly expensive (as far as private schools go).  I did get a good chunk of scholarships.  I only went for 2 years though, and did not finish.  I put in my post that I owe less than $2,000.  I probably borrowed a total of $6,000.  My repayments have been very small which is why I'm still paying! LOL.

  • I went to a private college which now costs close to $40,000 a year. It was no where near that when I attended. I was blessed not to have any student loans back then. If I was looking for colleges now, however, mine would not even be in the running.

  • I went to University of the South in Sewanee, TN for my first undergrad. Unfortunately I didn't qualify for grants or scholarships but I did have a trust that paid for it. It was about $25k/year with books, tuition and board. My second undergrad degree is from American Intercontental University in Atlanta, GA. That I had to take out student loans and I still owe $40k.

  • I started out at a private college, which cost about 24k/year.  I took out student loans and my parents paid for a lot of it.  I transferred to a state college after 3 semesters there.  The state college cost way less than that so my parents were able to pay it out of pocket each semester.  I did my graduate at UC Berkeley for 2 years.  By that point I didn't feel my parents should be paying for my education any longer so I applied for fellowships and that covered housing, tuition, and other expenses for those 2 years.  Afterwards I finished paying off my loans.  It took me about 3 more years.

  • I went to Illinois (in-state) and lived on campus. I also studied abroad in Florence, Italy for a semester which is what cost me the most (but at least I got to see a lot of Europe!). I racked up about $75,000 in loans. Though, my husband had it worse. He racked up almost $125,000 in loans by going to an out of state school, and all he got to see was rural Indiana.

  • UC Irvine .. tution then was dirt cheap ($4100/year) BUT books and living expenses cost upwards of 2-3 times that amount.  my SL balance literally DOUBLED my disasterous 1L year.

Capital University in Bexley, OH. It is a small private school and I got most of it paid for... so honeslty the $25,000 I owe is room and board for 4 years and 1 semester's tuition...

I went to Mount Union! :-)

I also got scholarships so a majority of what I still owe is room and board too, along with a small amount of tuition.

  • I went to a state school too.  I lived on campus but I had a scholarship and they did textbook rental there which helped me save a lot.  I don't remember exactly what my loan total was after 4 years, maybe 15k?  I was accepted to a more prestigious university but tuition would have been 30k per year and that was after a 10k scholarship.  I just couldn't justify the expense and I'm very happy with my decision.

Both of my parents went to Capital -- that's where they met! My dad was a football player back in the 60s. It's not every day that you hear about Capital University. :)

OP -- I went to Ohio University (which, ironically, was announced just today as this year's #1 party school in the US).

  • I went to a state school and I think it costs $9000 a year including room and board. I am VERY fortunate in that my parents paid for it. I hope to do the same for my kids.  I graduated in 2001 and am pretty sure that tuition at my alma mater has gone up a lot since.

My H's school was well over $30k/year. His parents paid for one year and he took care of the rest. He had it paid off before I met him (Nice!).

  • Local state college. My loans are paid off. I want to go back for my bachelors at another local university, but I can get that for free since DH works there.

  • I went to a pricey private school (Georgetown Univ) - it was $30-38K the years I was there.  DH went there as well.  We are both incredibly fortunate that our parents paid for it and we didn't have to take any debt.

    LAW SCHOOL

I envy anyone with under $100k of student loans.

oh an my DH has big fat law school loans too.  We will be paying them for the entire life of the 25 year loans unless of course we hit a big PI/wrongful death case that we can refer out and make millions...  wishful thinking right?

yes sorry that was morbid and mean...but true.

  • I went to the University of Nebraska at Omaha and lived on campus for the first two years. Then I had an apartment, and eventually moved back home to finish out the last two years. I am glad I did that because I got the on campus experience in the beginning and then saved $$ by moving back home later on. It was not too expensive to go there and came out with little debt, most of which my parents paid off for me, thankfully.

  • I went to Yale and received a scholarship so was very lucky

  • I went to The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington. I paid out of state tuition. I believe (at the time), I paid $15,000 a year. Thankfully, I had scholarships and all that jazz to help pay for school. Evergreen is a public liberal arts and science institution that has all similarities to a private school.

Doesn't surprise me! I've worked the Halloween weekend with the Sheriffs Office down there and that gets a little crazy.

  • Grad school was $745 a credit hour.

  • Texas Woman's University for undergrad.  I paid tuition, books, rent, etc. with loans.  But, fortunately those loans were paid for by my parents when I was finished.

Grad. school at University of Texas at Arlington, then grad. school part deux at University of North Texas.  Plus misc. course work at Montgomery College and online at Penn State.  Now that's where the $$ starting adding up.  We also owe on DH's school loans for his pricy private school undergrad. and his law school.

    I'm a Hopkins girl too! :)
  • I attended a community college for 3 semesters to (inexpensively) knock out my pre-reqs & then transferred to a state school after that.  Lived at home for 2 of the 4 years, so that saved a bundle too.

  • I went to Bowling Green State University, in Bowling Green, OH. It was a state school about 3 hours away from where I grew up. I think with room and board it was about $12,000-$13,000 a year. I was lucky my parents paid for school- so I graduated with no debt.

Look like we have a lot of Ohio people on here-  My oldest sister went to Ohio University- it took her 6 years to do a 4 year program (we think she partied too much, hence why me or my middle sister were not allowed to go there! But OU is such a pretty school. My middle sister went to Miami of Ohio and and Medical College of Ohio for med school.

  • All up and down the state of Florida. I went to at least 5 community colleges before getting my AA. I changed majors so many times trying to find something that I liked. When I did find what I wanted to study I switched universities once. I wasted a good 8 -9 years in getting my BS degree. Then another 4 on my masters. Needless to say I owe a small fortune.

  • I am just starting my school and I am hoping to God I do not accrue that much in SL. I have a Pell Grant and that's covering this year's tuition and textbooks plus some. I am going to a local community college for my AA then will transfer to a local private college.

  • I went to Georgia State University for both undergrad and law school.  I had scholarships and worked during undergrad so I didn't have any loans from that.  I think I have about $16k left in law school loans.  I took out $20k total.

DH went to GA Tech and also had scholarships and his parents paid for living expenses.  He got his MBA at Georgia State and his company paid for it, so we are lucky that my loans are the only ones we have.

  • I went to the University of Florida and had a 100% paid scholarship, so my tuition was free.  I still worked through college and have 20K in loans.  Partly for room and board, but mostly because I had a little too much fun!
  • I went to a small private school in New Jersey for both my BA and my MA. I was lucky enough to pay off my BA loan with an inheritance. I paid my way through grad school and it took me forever, but I graduated with no grad school loans. My parents helped me a LOT - although they couldn't pay my way through college, they did help me with my payments and car payments.

  • I went to a small private school (a young person's mistake) and tuition was about $20K a year (NOT including room and board).  I had some scholarships and a grant, but the rest was loans.  I also got a $16K masters degree after that.  MH's parents paid for his undergrad, but not medical school.  Sigh.

  • I went to an Ivy League university. They totally pulled a bait & switch on me. I was offered almost full tuition by the school my freshman year, significantly less my sophomore year and by senior year, I was taking out way more in loans than I had anticipated I would when I first started. I worked my butt off in the summers and did work study during the school year to pay for as much as I could up front, but I still ended up with about $40,000 in loans when I graduated.

Before going to grad school, I worked and paid off my undergraduate debt, tried to save some more money and then ended up working full-time and going to grad school at night so I wouldn't again end up with a hefty loan payment.

I'm going to try to be philosophical about it and say that the experience of figuring out how to pay off that much debt before I turned 30 made me a better person.
