10mo & supply tanking :(...

so I have EBF since LO was born, started solids @ 6months, and just started night weaning about 2 weeks ago. I BF on demand, but she is only BF @ 4-6 times a day and not for too long anymore. she BF longest in the mornign and before bed. But when I pump at work I am only getting @ 3 oz per breast, and that is after close to 5-6 hours of not BF. I want to BF a lot longer, but it seems my supply is not going to last that long!

And I had sooo much milk before, close to 8 oz per breast every 3-4 hrs, I have a freezer full of milk bc i had so much production in the beging.  is there anything i can do to help?!  thanks

Re: 10mo & supply tanking :(...

  • I'm tanking too. I get less than an ounce each time that I pump now, but I mostly nurse and tend to have just enough. I've had to supplement a few times. It started about 2 weeks ago when I am pretty sure that I ovulated for the first time. I just got my first period today. So, I guess the decrease in production is related to that.

I ordered some domperidone after trying fenugreek and power pumping without success. I got it in the mail yesterday and haven't started it b/c I am a little nervous. Some girls on this site told me about the domperidone. Its a prescription medicine that should help.

There's some great info on supply on www.kellymom.com if you haven't looked there already.

  • I read on Kellymom.com that BF babies don't need to increase ounces because the milk itself changes to meet their needs. At this point LO is not eating but 24ish ounces of milk in a total day anyhow. Your pump output is very similar to what I'm getting at 8 months, it seems dismal but not when you think about how much less milk they are starting to drink. She may also be able to empty your breast within a few minutes, I know a feeding session that lasts 10 min for us seems like forever, they're always very very short.

I don't think this is the beginning of the end but her needs are starting to change and you may want to do some reading about nursing an older baby.

  • thanks ladies! I will definitly look into that site. I really hope that my milk supply is changing and is enough for her in addition to the solids. she does seem satisfied after BF so maybe im just overreacting, lol. thanks again

  • Just wanted to add that I'm in the same boat. We night weaned at 7 months but my supply tanked so we went back to nursing once at night. Now, at almost 11 months we night weaned and my supply is reduced and pumping only gives me 3 ounces after 8 hours. DD is nursing 5-7 times a day.

I agree with PP, although it is a bit scary, our bodies are just adjusting to the needs of the kiddos. Between solids, water and not needing as many calories as a newborn, they just don't need as much. Also, I have seen in many, many moms (and myself) that worrying about your supply really negatively affects your supply. Try not to worry and know that what's going on is normal. Good luck!
