Baby pushing away?

So the past couple of days have been a bit odd for us. My LO has starting having more greenish colored stool instead of the typical yellow/orange. When I go to feed her, within seconds she makes a face as if she doesn't like it and breaks the latch. Once I relatch her she's fine and will eat. Once she actually starts eating, I get a sharp pain in the opposite breast. It only lasts a few seconds and is more of an "all over" pain than in one particular area. I called my LC Wednesday night but am still waiting to hear back from her. I haven't changed my diet and this has only been going on a couple of days. I'm a FTM and LO is 2 weeks old. She's been ebf since the day she was born with no issues. I typically feed her from one breast per feeding for 15-25 minutes (depending on when she decides she's done). She isn't overly fussy or seem to have discomfort other than pushing me away when I first start feeding her. Can anyone give insight as to what might be going on? Is it something I should call her pediatrician about? I'm starting to feel like something is wrong with me when she grimaces and pushes me away :(

Re: Baby pushing away?

  • Hang in there! There's nothing wrong with you. Here's a few common problems that might cause the behavior you ate describing.

our letdown might be too fast or too slow, or there might be too much milk for her at once. You can try hand expressing it pumping until you get a letdown, then put her to the breast.
If you have an overactive letdown, nursing in a reclined position could help.

Is there blood or mucous in her stool? She could have an intolerance to something you are eating.

Or you both be developing thrush, which could cause pain in her mouth.

I recommend calling the lactation consultant again. Try searching for independent IBCLC in your area if you don't get a response. A local facebook group could get you good recommendations. You can also see if there's a La Leche League or Breastfeeding USA meeting; the leaders of the meetings may be able to help you out.

How is your daughter's diaper output? If she isn't having enough wet diapers, you should contact the pediatrician now. If diaper output is fine, you can try to meet with a lactation consultant first.

    Good luck!

Pushing away could be one of two issues: 1. She is frustrated waiting for the let down. If that's the case, try pumping for a few minutes before you latch her or express by hand to get things going. 2. She is getting overwhelmed by a strong let down. If that's the case, express or pump the let down first then latch her (if you want, save that milk and freeze it later to mix with oatmeal or cereal when she's older, I don't think you want to build a stash with that because it's all foremilk, but I could be wrong about that)

Pain could be thrush, but I also found that my letdown started to hurt a bit once my supply increased, could it be that? Does it let up after your first letdown is done? That was more nipple pain but it could radiate to the rest of your breast.

Edit: advice from PP about reclined position for OAL (over active letdown) is good also. I actually loved that nursing position for a lot of different reasons.

There is no sign of blood in her stool and the consistency is still seedy and I haven't seen mucous. I've been keeping an eye on her mouth as well and I don't see signs of thrush either. The pediatrician told me it would look like Greek yogurt on her tongue and I definitely don't see that.

Her diaper output is fine. She averages 8 wet diapers a day and has anywhere from 5-9 stools a day, I will definitely call the lactation consultant again, there aren't many other resources in my area though. The closest big cities to me are San Diego and Phoenix and they're both 3 hours away. Thank you ladies so much for your help! I will try expressing before and reclining while I feed her. Hopefully that'll start to help.
