Trying to Get Pregnant

Switching thermometers mid cycle-is it going to mess me up?

I've posted before about my stupid thermometer giving me the same temp for days in a row. Since I had already started a cycle I decided to stick with it until my next cycle. Well, DD apparently thought I need a new one because she dropped it in the toilet this morning. Even if it's not broken I'm definitely not putting it back in my mouth! Since I wasn't happy with that one I don't want to buy another. I'm going to get the Walmart one that many of you recommend. Is that going to mess me up? The one I had read to the tenth of a degree and I think the Walmart one reads to the thousandth. Should I enter the temp just to the tenth of a degree for the rest of my cycle? I haven't Oed yet, and based on past cycles I'm probably still a few weeks out. Thanks!

  • Yes, you will not have an accurate chart if you switch mid cycle.  I understand not wanting to put the old one back in your mouth after it has been in the toilet!  I am not going to try and talk you into continuing to use the old one since I know where it has been.  Just know that your chart's pattern may not be entirely accurate now.

Since you are possibly a few weeks out from Oing, you might not have such a problem... but I am not sure.

    Lots of luck!

This, she is 100% right. I have more than one BBT. One of them temps a whole degree higher than others. It's not so much the actual number  you get, but the trend/pattern that can descern a shift. So, if I switched to my higher temping BBT midcycle, FF would think I O'd based off of the higher temps that are 'messing' with my pattern.

Seeing you have no choice, just keep it in mind when you buy a new one. GL!

  • Ok, I think I'll go get the same one then and pick up the Walmart one if I have another cycle after this. Thanks ladies!

Even getting a new one of the same brand can be different from the original.  It is totally up to you on which one you get.

I am thinking/hoping that if you are about a week from Oing, your 6 pre-O temps and all the post-O temps will still show you a good pattern.

Ugh, she's lucky she's so darn cute! I would guess I have at least 10-14 days until O so hopefully that will be enough

  • I switched thermometers (from walgreens to walmart) on CD 16 of this cycle because my dog ate it. I didn't end up O'ing until a few weeks later and my temps with old and new thermometers seemed to stay in the same general range.  Although, this is just my personal experience and it would seem that usually switching thermometers effs things up.  I didn't have a choice though.  Either not temp, or buy a new thermometer and hope for the best.
