  • You should never add cereal or rice to the bottle unless your pedi tells you to because of reflux.

You can start solids at 4 months, but some people wait until 6 months.

All of this. Cereal in bottles is an old school thing, unless for reflux under a pedi rec.

My LO just had her 4 month appt yesterday and my pedi recommends starting rice cereal between 4 1/2 and 5 months.

  • You should trust your own instincts and by determining how well your baby is developing you can give cereal at any time-reflux or not.

It will fill their tummy and may even get you 30min-1 hour extra before the next feeding time.

  • Babies really do not need anything besides breastmilk or formula until 6 months.  4 months should be the earliest to start any solids.  Nutritionally they are getting everything they need from breastmilk or formula.  Solids are just teaching them a different way to eat.  Their digestive system is not ready for anything else before 4 months and IMO that is still a little early.  We waited until 6 months.  www.kellymom.com has a list of signs that show that baby is ready for solids.

As for the reflux, my son was diagnosed with it and we took him to the chiropractor to get adjusted and we gave him acidophillus and fish oil.  This helped tons.  He still spit up but he was no longer uncomfortable from it.  Some babies are just spitty babies.  Our pedi said that adding rice cereal to the bottle would actually make him more uncomfortable.
