Hi everyone, my little girl was born on Thursday and we are trying so hard to take the nursing journey. She latches well, but is very small and is still not hitting my nipple just right, both nipples are very sore and may even be cracked, its so painful
Has anyone supplemented formula to allow nipples to heal? I would like to do this until my milk comes in, I was thinking I could provide her with the formula and still pump a little on each side as to make sure milk drops down and then either try nursing again when i am healed, or even just feed her my milk from bottles...
any advice... i desperately want to provide her with my own milk
Re: Supplimenting Due to Cracked Nipples?
IMO, pumping was harder on my nips than BF.
I would use the lanolin cream and air them out as often as possible. Pumping isn't as good as a baby and your supply may very well still drop if you don't have baby emptying you out. It's only been 4 days. This is just part of breastfeeding.
The colostrum that comes before your milk comes in is soooo important! BF hurts for the first few weeks, but then it becomes much easier than making bottles. Ice packs and lanolin were the only thing that helped me early on.

Kellymom.com is a great resource for all things BF related.
When I first started BF, I didn't get LO latched on correctly and it caused one of my nipples to crack. After talking to a friend that was also BFing, she told me to use a nipple shield to let the nipple heal (it allows them to get the milk but have no contact with your nipple); this worked wonders for me. Within about 1.5 days my nipple was healed enough that I can stand to nurse him on it again.
ETA: Stick with it, even through the pain; it gets better with time!
