Babies: 0 - 3 Months

"Don't wake him, he'll wake you"

I know you aren't supposed to wake a sleeping  baby, but I'm worried that ds doesn't wake us up when he is hungry.  At his 1 month check-up pedi said not to let him go more than 5 hours at night without feeding.  He is a noisy sleeper and grunts/squeals/squeaks/groans alot in his sleep but he never actually wakes up and cries.  Ds is 6 weeks now.  I let him go six hours once to see if he would wake up and he didn't.  Do you think it's possible that he is just not hungry yet?  Should I continue waking him or wait longer to see if he wakes me?

  • Is he BF'ing?  Does he always sleep that long?  I would say if he sleeps that long regularly, you may need to wake him at 5 or 6 hrs.  If it's just occasionally, I would let him go because he's obviously catching up on much needed rest and will let you know when he's ready to eat.

  • I'm pumping and giving him ebm.  He has always slept this long.  Not once have I ever woken up to him crying.  Up until he was 4 wks, I would just set my alarm for every 2.5-3 hours and feed him and now I set my alarm for every 4.5-5 hours and wake him and feed him.  I see on here all the time that everyone says never to wake a sleeping baby but I'm afraid he would never eat if I didn't wake him!  Lol
  • We have to wake ours at night because when they're warm and swaddled they just won't wake up at all... they'll go 5 hours easy if we don't wake them, but then when they do wake up they'll be starving and screaming.  Our pediatrician said not to go more than 4 hours with them because they have reflux and weight gain issues.. so I think that sometimes it's ok to wake a sleeping baby.  Maybe talk with your dr. about it?

  • People who say "never wake a sleeping baby" probably didn't have the issues or worries that you have. If you trust your pedi then follow their guidelines. You will ALWAYS be able to find somebody with a different theory or another way to go about things. You have to choose one source and stick to it otherwise you'll be overwhelmed with advice and not know where to turn. That's not saying that your pedi's word is "god" but if you trust them then do what they say within reason.
  • Scarlett slept that long at 1 month old. Actually, she slept 5-6 hours at a time from the start.  However, we were only told to wake her up until our 2 week check up because she had gained weight and was past her birth weight at that point.  She continued to gain weight at a healthy pace, so we never went back to waking her.  She is also bottle-fed breastmilk.

Talk to your pedi about how she's gaining and if she's having enough wet/dirty diapers.

Honestly, at 1 month, if she was gaining properly, I'd stop waking, but that's me.
