I just realized I need to start looking into how we are going to manage this. We are going to chicago pretty soon and I will need to fly home with all my breast milk. Eeek! If you have any personal tips to share I would appreciate it.
you mean you will need to fly back with the milk you pumped while gone? that is not that bad. I pumped and put the milk in a fridge while I was traveling. Then when it was time to go, I put all of the milk in a soft cooler (from Target--looked like a purse) with ice packs. I carried it on. They made me open one of the bottles for testing. But let the rest be, which was great, because almost all of it was in bags, not bottles.
I don't have recommendations for frozen milk, though. I think that is harder. You need dry ice.
Just make sure the cap is screwed on tight after they check. I read a post a while back that the TSA agent didn't put the cap on properly and the milk spilled.
Formerly Je*lastname*. Started a new account because I couldn't get my SN changed to something less personal.
I went to Chicago for the weekend without dd. We stayed in hotel that had a freezer in our room. Anything I pumped I froze. When it was time to leave I put in into a soft top cooler with ice packs that I had brought with me. Granted it was a short 90 minute flight, but the milk was still completely frozen by the time I got home from the airport. I let TSA know that I had a pump with breast milk prior to scanning and had no issues.
Thank y'all! I am relieved to not hear any horror stories yet of having to throw it out because the TSA are azzhats and didn't trust it as safe. Yay!
Yes, I need to bring the milk back that I pump to relieve engorgement as DD will not be coming with. I'm stoked that I have 105 ounces to leave behind! I am planning on adding to that a bit before now and then.
I have flown quite a bit with bm and mine was all liquid and either in bottles or containers. For me they tested all of it, but i usually only had one or two at a time anyway. I know I learned my lesson by taking it all out of the diaper bag ahead of time including my formula. If you leave it in the bag it will take longer because they have to search the whole bag. A lot of the TSA agents will let you take the cap off and screw it back on. If they don't, you can request it so they don't spill it. Mine almost got spilled the first time. All in all it was pretty painless. It's just a quick swipe and your done.
A month ago I flew with about 30 oz of BM in the Lansinoh storage bags. I had it in a soft cooler with ice packs. I just told the TSA people and they said okay and I sent it through the regular x-ray machine. They didn't test/check it or do anything special.
