Do I need to wash my pump parts?

I am in such a sleep deprivation haze that I forgot to bring my pump parts home with me from work yesterday to clean.  I keep them in a fridge in my office at all times.  Since breast milk stays good refrigerated for a few days, do I need to worry about washing my pump parts before using them today?  I'd rather not take them into my building's gross bathrooms.

Re: Do I need to wash my pump parts?

  • I probably would.  This may sound weird but, take them apart.  If where the little bit of milk can be smells fine ,I think it would be fine to not wash them.  But I'd rather wash and not risk my whole days worth of milk being ruined.  Do you use the medela wipes?  You can pump 10 min after using them.

  • What PP said. I clean all of my pump parts after every use just to be careful. It's a bit of a pain, but worth it in my eyes. :)
  • Thanks, ladies.  Glad I asked.

Just for future reference, I keep one of the medela 'steam clean' bags in the pump bag for just this reason.

(I'd probably not worry in your situation, but I actually used my bag this AM because I dropped the shields  on the floor of my car and that's just to gross for words right now :)

  • I definitely would wash them.

I use these:  https://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2735035  and they are a life saver!

  • yeah take them apart and they start getting gunk build up in there it's gross!
  • If they were refrigerated I wouldn't owrry about washing them.  I have used my pump parts two days in a row, without washing, if they were in the fridge.

  • I wash them after every use.  I used to take 2 sets of parts to work so I didn't have to bother washing there, but now I only pump once at work so I take 1 set.

  • I pump twice a day and leave the whole setup in the fridge in between pumpings.  I've never pushed it a whole day but I don't imagine it'd be a problem.  As everyone's said though, on the go the wipes and bags are lifesavers.
