My MIL is visiting from out of state and it's become obvious that breastfeeding makes her uncomfortable. She's likened it to being "like a cow," acts surprised when I nurse in public, and asked how long I plan to keep this up. She had kids young and formula fed them. I don't care what she thinks in the sense that I'm going to feed my daughter how I please, but I hate that her discomfort is making me uncomfortable.

Re: MIL squeamish about BF-ing (vent)
My parents didn't have any first hand knowledge of BFing and it was weird for them at first as well. However they are now big advocates and are completely fine with it. We talked about it quite a bit, and the more they learned and saw the benefits, the more onboard they were.
Do you have the kind of relationship where you could talk about this? If so, I'd really encourage it. If not, tough it out and soon she'll be out of your hair!
Mac and cheese lover!
I'm not going to flame you, but I disagree that someone should do that in their own home. When I'm at someone else's house, I cover up or leave the room, but in my own home, I feel that I should be free to nurse. (it's not like my boob is hanging out or anything! It's pretty hard to see anything)
I just wouldn't want someone to feel uncomfortable in my house.. so with them being the guest I would probably go somewhere else. That's just what I would do. It doesn't matter that the person shouldn't feel uncomfortable.. the fact is that they do and therefore I would go into my bedroom or something. I don't know.. that's just my opinion.
So true! Sometimes when folks are visiting that I'm not particularly fond of, BF is an excellent excuse to leave the room. Even in my own home, I'll excuse myself and take my sweet time feeding, burping, changing diapers, etc. Sometimes it's really quite nice to get away from company!
Here's my take on BFing...
In my house no matter who is visiting I feed the baby wherever I am, I do toss a receiving blanket over, but that's what makes me comfortable. If anyone visiting has an issue they are free to go to another room until I done, but I'm not leaving.
In other people's houses I excuse myself to a separate and private room.
In public I just feed her.
It's your house so do what makes you comfortable.
yikes!
