Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

How often does your child get

juice?  Aadi gets it once a day, no more than 4 ounces.

dessert?  With dinner almost every day.  I try and stick to fruit but I gave him poundcake once, nutella on wheat bread today and a part of a cupcake twice.

Re: How often does your child get

  • He's never had juice.

Dessert..if you count fruit, then pretty much always for lunch (at DCP) and maybe like 75% of the time for dinner. Other desserts, very rarely and I don't really give him his own dessert, it would be a piece of mine - he's had a couple bites of cookie before and a couple bites of cake.

  • Juice - maybe once or twice a week.  2oz water, 2oz apple juice mixture.  He gets it with lunch -- some weeks not at all.

Desert - never.  If he finishes his lunch or dinner but still seems hungry I will give him some fresh fruit.  He gets a yogurt every night before bed and fruit for snack in the morning and the afternoon -- I see no reasone for dessert, more sugar.

If I'm eating some icecream or cake I will let him taste as I eat - I have no problem with him having some.  But I will not give him a pc of cake on his tray.

  • Georgia gets diluted juice (about 50:50) only in the morning when she wakes up....the rest of the day she gets water.

As for dessert....I'd say next-to-never.  She does get the occasional cookie, or marshmallow (she LOVES them!) because I also has a 5 yr old who is VERY serious about her "treats"...but no more than once or twice a week for DD#2.

She gets fruit with almost every meal, but I don't count that as dessert LOL

  • I give him a little watered down juice most days.  I don't give him desserts/sweets regularly but I share if I have something.

  • I give DS juice (pause for gasp!) He only gets about 2 ounces really watered down. So about 2 ounces of juice with 6 ounces of water and he drinks about 24 ounces like that everyday. So tops he's getting 6oz of juice total everyday.

Dessert? he eats a bite if we have something sweet we share with him but i don't seek out to give him cookies, cake, etc

  • Juice--occasionally.  I was much stricter with my DD, but DS has had it a handfull of times.

Dessert--rarely. (though DD gets it pretty much every night).

  • T never gets juice.

He gets ice cream every few days-- June is dairy month and we did promotions all over the place, so he got lots of treats :)

  • He's gotten juice maybe 3 times and two those he was at a birthday party so I gave him a treat :)  He gets fruit with lunch and dinner and I count that as dessert but I've softened my stance on sweets a little.  He's definitely gotten a bite of cookie, he gets his own animal crackers and he had birthday cake at a party over the weekend.  I don't make a habit of giving it to him but I don't mind if he has it every so often.

  • DD has only had juice once(we were at a birthday party) and she didn't really like it.

DD gets fruit as part of her breakfast and snack every day.  Today, she had 1/2 a banana this morning and I cut up some honeydew melon for her snack.  She's only had dessert if we go to parties and it's only a few bites.  DH and I aren't big dessert people, so it's not a habit for us to have it every day anyways.

  • I put a splash of juice into her water most of the time. I havent given her straight juice..i know its ok to do but for some reason I havent done it yet!

She'll take a sip from our cups once in awhile but she's never had a whole cup of her own before.

Desserts is usually fruit..she LOVES fruit but I've given her ice pops, a  bite of cupcake or a piece of a cookie once in awhile but she doesnt seem too interested in any of it. Definaltely doesnt take after me!

  • I think she has only had juice once so far... Mainly because we only have juice boxes, and they are a rare treat for the older kids. She is also happy with milk and water, so until she can drink out of a juice box her juice intake will be almost nothing. we have dessert every night after dinner, most nights are fruit but I have done a cookie or ice cream eveery now and then. She eats the same thing everyone else does.

  • DS eats fruit with almost every meal but I don't consider it a "dessert."

We give him watered down juice a couple of times week (usually at dinner time) but only if he's been having pooping issues. Otherwise, it's milk and water only.

A few times a week we'll allow him to have a cookie for dessert (Nilla wafers, he loves them).

This is us too. DS has never had juice, and I want to hold off as long as possible. He may get fruit after dinner, but never sweets, unless it's the VERY occasional bite of mine.

  • I haven't given DS any juice yet.

The closest thing to dessert he's had are animal and graham crackers.

  • DD has juice once in a while.  I try to make 1 part juice to 4 parts water, so it's pretty watered down.  But most of the time we give milk with meals.  We have a hard enough time getting her to take down enough milk so I don't really present juice as an option very often.

We normally don't have dessert at home but I will share some with DD if we're in a situation where we do have it, like a party or something.

  • No juice and maybe once a month dessert.  We were actually giving her fruit everyday but our pedi said not to give her so much, fruit is empty calories.
  • Juice - never mostly because we are just having a really hard time getting her to drink milk already at meals and in general so if she is going to be drinking something I want it to be water or milk.

Dessert - probably 2 times a week max.  She got her first real dessert over Father's Day weekend when we all went to Baskin Robin's and she got a kids cup of ice cream.  Normally it's maybe a half a cookie or graham crackers or something.  She gets fruit everyday so I wouldnt really count it as dessert since it's usually a main part of her meals.

Juice - I give her 1/4 juice 3/4 water a couple of times a week.

Dessert - usually only on special occasions. She had birthday cake and ice cream at a party over the weekend. Occasionally she'll get a cookie. I will probably let her have ice cream on the 4th of July. I don't consider fruit to be a dessert. It's healthy and good for her, and she eats it with almost every meal.

  • Juice - occasionally - 1-3x a week.  1 sippy mixed with water.

dessert- when weare eating it.  Cake twice this weekend, but we usually do not have dessert on a daily basis.

DS has never had juice, but has had a sip or two of my lemonade twice.  Dessert depends on where were at.  If were at a family party and I am having ice cream or cake I will let him have some.  We don't have dessert after dinner all the time.  So I would say maybe two times a week he will have a sweet.
  • Juice, never. He doesn't like it. Dessert, once in a blue moon, if we eat anything but we usually don't eat dessert.

  • juice- only when she's backed up then i'll give an ounce of prune juice with water

dessert- i don't consider fruit a dessert so maybe a couple times a week i'll give her some cookies with her milk (she has milk and a snack before bed).

  • DD gets diluted juice every day.  We have major constipation issues.

She rarely gets dessert though she often eats fruit as a snack or part of her meal.

  • I used to never give him juice, but then when we went to the Dr. she told me to give it to him at least once a day to help get his poop to not be as hard. Since doing that it's been helping. I told her I always thought juice was bad, and she said not at all and that it's really good for keeping them regular.... I get the lower sugar stuff, or water it down though.

I gave him prune juice for the first time a few weeks ago after she suggested it...I didn't know how potent that stuff was....he drank a small sippy of it and an hour later had a major explosion all over himself, our recliner, and me. LOL! The poor kid didn't know what happened...he just laid on the couch the rest of the night with a look of confusion on his face. :)

this.  his water has a drop of Mots for Tots White Grape to flavor it since he won't drink it without a little flavor.  his sweets will consist of fresh fruit or fruit cups in juice or a few animal cookies.  he doesn't eat cake, ice cream or anything. he's just not interested

This exactly. We give her juice a lot, but it is always a 1:3 ratio of juice to water. She rarely has desserts unless I'm eating it, then she steals bites from me. Juice is NOT a big problem unless you abuse it. We also only buy 100% juice.

  • Juice? Maybe once a month.

Dessert? Well, we give something "sweet" like applesauce, yogurt, or pudding after lunch and dinner almost daily.

  • He gets juice about 3 times a week.  4 oz of apple juice watered down.

He does not get dessert.  He has had a few bites of dessert here & there (a couple bites of cupcake at a birthday party, etc.).  I don't consider fruit a dessert, it's a staple in our families diet.  He gets it daily.

  • Juice maybe once a day, if that, always diluted. Dessert never unless it's for a special occasion like a birthday and even then only a few bites of cake or the like. Or a cookie every once in awhile.
  • juice: i'd say almost daily. it's very, very diluted though. when i fill up his straw sippy i'd say it's about 15% juice and 85% water (then sometimes when i refill it i won't even add more juice to it).

dessert: like never. i think he has had a cookie crumb here or there. on his 1st b-day he got a cupcake i made him. oh, and we went to his cousin's b-day party and e had a little cake (no frosting). if he finishes a meal and i want to give him something i'll give him a graham cracker or some ritz crackers.

  • watered down juice, daily 6oz he drinks 2-5oz normally (its 2oz juice, 4oz water)

dessert, well for dinner we have meat, grain, veggie, fruit and dairy we don't eat dessert in this house. If its the weekend and we're doing s'mores he'll have a couple bites, if we're out or at a party he'll have sweets/cake

  • They have never had juice, just water and milk.

The have fruit or yogurt with every meal so tha It's their 'dessert' normally. I will share my dessert with them if I have it (cake, cookie, ice cream...) which is about once a week.

  • she gets actual juice less than 1x per day.  Sometimes we'll give her one of those Fruitables juice boxes.

I do, though, give her one sipply of diluted pedialyte every day ... which I just noticed yesterday is full of dextrose, so it's no better than juice.

But she usually gets about 16 oz of whole milk every day, so i don't feel so bad if she has one sippy of a fruity/sweet drink.

  • Juice: Never. He drinks water or milk. I did try watered down apple juice when we first switched to milk and I was hoping it would help his constipation but he wanted nothing to do with it. Which I am fine with!

Dessert: I don't count fruit as a dessert because he does have it throughout the day with meals and as a snack. He has had a cookie and a taste of our ice cream but it is rare (maybe once a week if that.)

He tried juice once and didn't like it, so never.
  • steverstever member
Oh and he gets a few bites of dessert every once in a while.
  • He has never had juice.

He does get animal crackers after dinner most days and daycare occasionally has popsicles.

If we are counting fresh fruit then he eats that twice a day usually.

  • She gets juice every so often and fruit with most meals and/or as snacks. It's fruit. Not dessert.
  • He gets something like cake, pie about twice a month icecream a few times.  cookies all the time.  We have juice often but he seems to like my diluted cystal light
