Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Question about 9 week old and feedings.

Hi ladies, I'm starting a nanny job tomorrow for a 4 year old, 3 year old, 20 month old and a 2 month old. I just popped over on 12-24 to ask a few questions about toddlers, but I wanted to ask some questions about the 2 month old as well.

What is the "normal" amount of formula for a 9 week old to eat? I was told by the parents that the baby eats about 40 oz a day normally. This seemed like a lot to me, but if that's what they're doing I'm surely not going to mess up their schedule. I'm also not entirely sure if that guess was accurate, because the mom said there are times when the baby will only eat 2 ounces at a time.

Also, when I went for a visit to see the kids on Friday the mom was using the same bottle for various feedings. Is that okay to do? I don't mind washing bottles at all, I just wasn't sure if that was okay to do with formula or if each feeding should be with a different bottle and nipple (or at least a freshly washed bottle and nipple).

Any advice you have is greatly appreciated. Thank you so much. :)

The general rule is 2.5 oz per pound in 24 hours.  For example, my DD is 8 weeks old.  She is around 10 lbs.  She takes in 7, 3.5 oz bottles per day (give or take).  She is roughly getting 22-25 oz per day.

I don't think it is ever recommended to give 40 oz.  That seems way too much for any baby, let alone a 9 week old.  As far as the bottle, does she at least rinse it between each feeding?  With formula, you have one hour from the start of a feed to use the formula.  Whatever is left after one hour, must be discarded.  I personally use a new bottle each feed.  I have enough for 2 days worth of feedings.  I just run the dishwasher every night.  In a pinch I've used the same bottle with a rinse, but it was I got caught out unexpectedly and didn't have an option kind of situation.

Thanks for the info! The baby is 11 lbs, so he's definitely getting more formula than needed. I'll talk to the mom about adjusting his feeding schedule. She did mention to me on Friday that the baby eats a TON, and even the pedi told her that he didn't need as much formula as he's getting.

I'll definitely use another bottle for each feeding. I knew about the 1 hour rule with formula, and they definitely have enough bottles for an entire day.

Thanks again for the advice :)

  • don't start a new job by telling the mother she is overfeeding her child. try spending time there first and see. If the baby is not spitting it all up, or maybe the baby is gassy spits up and then needs to eat again. I know many babies who were like that.

My son by 8-10 weeks was eating 5 to 6 oz bottle every 2-3 hours .

my daughter won;t east more than 3 at any given time and eats every 3-4 hours.

each kid is different. the rule about the formula in the pp is correct, 1 hour from when it's made
