Where to put baby carseat and 4 year old car seat?

Hi, what have you guy done who have 2 kids?  We have a mid sized SUV and I am trying to figure out the best placement for both seats.  My DS was in the middle seat forever, and just recently wanted to move to the window seat.  I let him even though it makes me super nervous because I know it isn't as safe But I know one of my kids have to sit on the window seat!  So should I put baby in the middle spot, or leave the middle open and put them both next to the windows?

  • My forward facing toddler will sit in the middle and the infant will be on the driver side. The center is safest, but will keep my toddler there because that's where we get the best install for his seat and it provides better protection for him since he's forward facing. The baby will be on the driver side seat, because it's the second safest spot because drivers are most likely to instinctively swerve the opposite way if they see someone headed for them.

  • My DS (who will be 6 in July) sits next to the window. MH owns a '94 Chevy Suburban, so we have quite a bit of room. I think MH will be putting LO's next to DS in the middle.

  • Right now, DD is rear facing behind the passenger seat.  When DS arrives, he'll be in the infant seat behind the passenger and DD will be moved behind the driver.  The infant seat BARELY fits behind the passenger seat in both cars (and I can't drive with it behind the driver's side...I'm too tall).  We can't put either in the middle as we can't move the driver's seat far enough back.  And we have a Prius and a Forester.  Go figure...
  • DD is behind me LO is behind passenger. I have 2 captains chairs in my middle row of my Traverse.

  • We put our 3 year old behind the passenger seat and I put the base behind the driver's side.  I can't get the infant carrier in the passenger side in the garage.

  • I saw a segment on the Today Show about this a few months ago... They advise keeping the toddler in the middle and putting the infant seat by the door.  The infant seats are overall better equipped to handle accidents etc. and the baby is more protected than a toddler or child in a convertible or booster.

This is what I plan to do even though life would be much easier with each one next to a door!

  • The forward facing toddler will sit behind the driver, and the infant seat will go behind the passenger. That allows the person driving to have more space, and better ability to see or reach the infant. We drive a small SUV and a compact sedan.
  • We have a small city garage- and can't really access the passenger doors in our SUV- DS was in a FF convertible carseat in the middle- he will be moved to the passenger side (and we'll have to crawl over the base- ugh!) and the infant carseat will go in the middle (because it is the only place it fits so DH or I can drive- we are both tall).

As for the car, I can access both doors (part of the reason why the SUV is so far over on the passenger side)- DS's FF convertible carseat will be moved to behind the driver and the infant carseat will go behind the passenger (can't fit behind the driver- again too tall).  The middle seat is not able to have a carseat (so says the car manual).

I'm not sure what we will be doing once we have two convertible carseats- especially since we RF until 2.

  • If there's two kids, the child with the least protection (the toddler/booster seat) should go in the middle.

  • Thanks everyone.  I think I will move my 4 year old back to the middle and put the baby in the window seat behind passenger.  I wont be able to reach her, but hopefully my four year old will be helpful!
