Breastfeeding

How many ounces per day does your 5-6 month old take?

I'm a potential match for bone marrow donation.  If I end up being the best person, and the patient's doc wants to do stem cells, I would need to pump and dump for 8 days (obviously I'll reverify with the risk assesment folks if things progress).  I'm starting to mentally make a plan if I am the best option for the patient in need.  I'm trying to figure out how much milk I'll need stashed away to cup and bottle feed for 8 days.

Thanks,

  • She took 4oz/bottle at that time so I'd say roughly 24oz/day.

    DD1 born 5/24/10.

    Missed M/C at 14 wks Feb 2012.

    DD2 born 5/14/13.

    Missed M/C at 9 wks July 2015.

    Expecting someone new 4/17/17.

  • I agree with what PP said - my LO probably gets about 24oz/day.

And great job on being part of the bone marrow registry (assuming that you are!)  - what an amazing gift to be able to give someone!

  • My 6.5 month old takes about 30/day (give or take a few ounces) and has since she was 4 months old. .

I hope Kate one day finds someone like you - or better - I hope youre Kate's potential match.

  • My 6 month old eats 42 oz a day since 1 month. Occasionally as low as 30, but pretty consistently in the 40 range. I EP so I can track easily - and my kid is a string bean, right in the middle for height and weight, not a sumo baby, so not sure why everyone else's babies seem to eat so much less :)

  • 5 oz per feeding, 35ish oz total. 40 during his growth spurt (which coincided with that time). He only just started solids so this is pretty much all EBF. It will be different if your LO has solids. And this is a guesstimate based on how much he has with the nanny. Otherwise I BF. But I do think I have a good sense of how much he's eating.

  • Gosh, I hope I'm Kate's match too.  I didn't know what you were writing about until I clicked on the little picture in your post.   I registered for the registry in 2005 in grad school.  It was something I had always wanted to do before that, but it was so easy when they had a drive at the med school I was affiliated with.

I am very worried about how my 3 month old will relatch after 8 days of not nursing, but how could I ever live with myself if I selfishly decided not to go further down the path of this process, knowing I could potentially save a life.  I would be very sad if our breastfeeding relationship was compromised, but saving a life is more important than my breastfeeding relationship.  I would hope that someone else would make that same decision if my child were in need of a BMT.

When did you get the call? I know they just ran Kate's matches recently, and there weren't very many. That's such a huge coincidence. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

I think it's very selfless that you're willing to take the chance of losing your BFing relationship. I've been EPing since my daughter was 3.5 weeks old. It isn't ideal, but your daughter can still get breastmilk. Besides, if your relationship is well established, she may jump back on. 8 days isn't that long.

Why would you have to pump and dump for 8 days? I'm just curious.

  • I was just contacted yesterday morning.  EP is so hard, so im really hoping to avoid it.  but you right, if I can always do that if I need to.  They took a medical history yesterday and said that if they need me or more info I'll be contacted within 2 to 3 weeks.  If I dont hear in 2 to 3 weeks I wont be contacted again for this patient.
  • the pump and dump is only for stem cell donation, if the pts dr wants bone marrow then i wont have to stop giving her bm.  im assuming its the meds leading up to the extraction.

Just wanted to say that I had to leave my 3 month old for 6 days for a business trip and she relatched just fine.  So, not quite as long as you will be unable to nurse, but I don't think you will necessarily have a problem.  Also, I checked with my pedi before my trip and she told me she did a 5 day trip at 4 months old and her kiddo relatched fine as well.  Just wanted to give you those anecdotal stories.  What a great gift you will be able to give!
