    3.  Mushrooms are gross.

    Agreed.

Mushrooms are one of those foods (can you really call fungus food?) that smell great but taste nasty.

When it comes to foods there are certain things I wished I liked because in my head they are "Grown up" things. Like mushrooms. Or wine. Or beer (but only bottled beer). Or coffee. I don't like any of them. Makes me feel like I am a grown up wanna be.

My hormones are completely out of whack the last few weeks.  I cry at EVERYTHING, think my family is going to die daily and then laugh at the most inappropriate things.  I need to go in and see someone, but any sort of anxiety/depression on a medical files ruins you adoption profile.  So I sit here, crazy in the head, just in case we want to adopt another child.  Gotta love life and its politics.

That is seriously ***-astic and makes me so angry for you!  You should not be penalized for having depression and getting help.  Hell, do they not realize that so many of us have been plagued with depression BECAUSE we had babies and it effed with out hormones?!

My confession: I have been doing some serious online shopping the last couple days.  I may conveniently forget to tell DH and just let the packages slowly arrive and see if he notices.

That is so messed up. So wrong. Sorry T. Make sure you're eating well, getting enough sleep, and try and get some exercise every day, even if it's just going for a walk. Give your body as much help as you can to heal. A well body helps a well mind.

Yup, you get a full background check with fingers prints and the works.  They leave out the anal probing....you just get that when you get the bill from the agency/lawyer!  ;)  However I would never change a single step of the process and I would do it again for another little stinker!

WOW.  I had no idea it got that involved.  It makes me a little irrationally angry that wicked awesome people like you have to jump through hoops like this to have a baby.

Started parent and baby swim lessons this week. It's motivated me to regularly shave my legs for the first time in, oh, a year or more? DH is so excited! Miss Whitney has been sleeping terribly this week, and with DH out of town I am TIRED. Last night I lost my patience with her, and raised my voice. I feel so, so, so terrible about it. She is just the sweetest little girl, and sometimes I think she deserves a better Mama than me. :-(

We all have days like that, big hugs.  I know you are a fantastic mamma and Whitney is a very lucky little girl.  Hope you see you on Sunday!

We started sleep training this week.  She'll be 4 months old this weekend and it was time to get her in this routine.  I wake her up at 6:00 everyday and we are out the door by 6:45, I pick her up at 4:30 and we home by 5:15.  She was going to bed at 7:30, but was starting to get really fussy during the day.  So I'm starting to put her down at 6:30 or 7:00 after our night time routine, but not rocking her to sleep.  It has been hell (she cries and cries and cries) and a lot of my friends have been totally judging me.  It is really frustrating, but we have to do what is right for us.  We are an extremely active family and need for her to be able to soothe herself to sleep without having to be rocked.  I stay in the room with her and put my hand on her head or chest until she falls asleep, but she just cries.  I talk softly to her and she calms down, but the minute I stop she looks at me with the biggest lower lip jutted out like, "What are YOU doing?!"  It's heartbreaking and I'm totally second guessing myself on this.

Not a flame, I get the sucky sleep stuff (believe me, I have a 10.5 month old who has never once STTN) but from everything I've read/heard 4 months is just not old enough to self-soothe, which may be why she's not responding well to it.  I am not a CIO person although DH wanted/wants to, but I wouldn't even let him discuss for real until she was 6 months plus.  Hope you are able to figure something out.  She is sure a cutie pie and getting so big!

Actually, the sleep books I read that were promoting a CIO (or something similar) method all said that some babies are in fact ready by 4 months.  Sleep training doesn't necessarily mean that the immediate goal is for the baby to STTN, but instead to self-soothe so that they don't always need to be rocked, nursed, etc. back to sleep when they do wake up.

We started Ferber (then straight CIO) with Lila right around then and it worked really well for us.  Luckily she took to it pretty quickly so we never had to deal with hours of screaming.

Katie, my best advice is to do whatever is/feels right for your family and your baby.  And don't beat yourself up because she's crying or because you think others might be judging you.  It's definitely not right for everyone - but that doesn't mean it's not right for anyone.  Of course it's difficult, but ultimately teaching your child how to soothe herself is a compassionate thing to do.

Also, if you haven't already I would definitely recommend reading Ferber's book.  Even if you don't use his method there is some extremely valuable information in there about sleep in general.  I had so many "aha!" moments while reading it - suddenly the issues we were facing made a whole lot more sense.

ETA: I just read your response to Shane and wanted to add that 4 months old is a pretty typical time for some sleep regression in most kiddos.  Your previously great sleeper is likely going through some big developmental steps and is having some sleep trouble as a result.  If you've ever seen anyone here talk about the "4 month wakeful", this is what they were talking about.

Thanks for the advice!  I'll be picking it up this weekend. :)  If this is the 4 month wakeful, I'm extremely grateful the child still is STTN!  I'd rather have a hard time getting her down than getting up in the middle of the night.

My apologies, I had not read that in any of the books I checked out.  I certainly hope you didn't think I was judging or anything, just surmising why it might not be working based on my understanding/recollection.  Of course, I forgot about the wakeful period at that time, probably because my kid's been a shiit sleeper up until very recently so it all seemed like a wakeful period to me. ;)  I agree with IHHM, don't beat yourself up and remember that you are a great mom and that you are doing what you feel is best for your particular child and family.  My kid still doesn't self-soothe very well so I am jealous of those who have kids that do!  (Although admittedly it may be partially my own doing. :p)

  • We did a combo of CIO and gradually decreased dream-feeding at 5mos and he has STTN since. Good Luck!

Two of my friends have just completed the (foster-to-adopt) process and it was SHOCKING what they had to go though - AND to pay for the privilege. Our system is so incredibly broken.

My FFFC (really just unpopular opinion)....fondant and jeggings are the worst "packaging" ideas since putting blister packs on scissors.

4 months is when we did CIO as well.  It worked miracles for our family.  I went back to work just as my already bad sleeper, regressed and was sleeping for no longer than 90 minutes.  It was he!! and I hated to resort to CIO.  But it worked fast and reduced his wakings to a managable 2x a night.   He has been a fantastic sleeper ever since and I'm so thankful I followed my gut and did what was best for the whole family.   It's one of those hard things that you sometimes have to do for the long term benefit.   and it's something you can only do when you're ready.

    Good luck!

  • I get really tired of reading (mostly on some blogs I follow) the endless mom guilt.  I wish we would all just take a second to realize that (most of) our children are thriving and then just allow ourselves to relax about everything!    I don't see the point in feeling guilty about something you can't control, or a choice that you specifically made.

I'm going to break the flame free rule and say MUSHROOMS ARE AWESOME AND YOU ALL ARE FREAKS.

    Mushrooms grow in sh!t.

    And the texture is disgusting.

    ::gag::

Lots of food grows in sh!t, or bugs live on it, or it grows in *** and bugs live on it...

Stop being logical! Let me live in my world where only nasty mushrooms grow in sh!t.

We are cold turkey potty training Kai today. He has been going on demand for months now in the potty and we are all sitting here today in our underwear so we can teach himwhat it feels like to be wet and go on his own..

now for the confession. 8 pairs of thomas underwear into it and Brian and I cracked open the wine. Its only 3 in the afternoon and we have drank over half the bottle already!

Wine is exactly how I plan to get through potty training!  Good luck!

Hold up.  Do you make these yourself or buy them?  If the latter, where do you buy them?

I would proudly wear one of Bill Cosby's uglyass sweaters in public for an entire month if I could find pudding pops again.

Someone just sent me a recipe for them. It was either Kacie or Jill. I haven't made them yet, but I was whining about needing a Pudding Pop and that Bumpie angel, whomever it was, sent me the recipe...

Or in my case, food is "grown" in a factory.... And I will stop being logical. Mushrooms are delicious, sh!tty fungus. Better?
