No, I wasn't.  I don't find it appropriate to dress your sluttiest to a football game.

I didn't know jeans and t-shirts were so scandalous. My favorite part of people's generalizations is that they assume one person's behavior at one school means all sorority girls are partying sluts who wear inappropriate clothing. What about the sorority that raised 10 million dollars in 4 years for St. Jude?

It was a joke.  Chill the hell out.

Maybe you should note sarcasm or that you are joking if you want people to take your comment that way.

Where did you go to school? At my school and ALL the schools we played against in sports, the sorority girls were always tastefully dressed in dresses and pearls.

Agree wholeheartedly with the bold part.  I was a member of a coed philanthropic fraternity (Alpha Phi Omega) and it was a great social outlet, without all the idiocy and popularity contests that frats/sororities often have.

I have always hated this generalization.

Ugh, me too!  Especially coming from a person who wasn't part of one.

I'm really sorry you don't like the reputation that your choices has; but my experience has backed up that the greek system was mostly a giant popularity contest.  The sororities at my school vied for the most attractive girls.  Its pretty much like politics in the grown-up world.  I realize that there were some very nice, friendly people in the greek system; but it was organized in such a way as to encourage shallow behavior.

I notice that, while you hate the generalization, you didn't deny that it had merit.

Sorry that I didn't have time to respond more fully before, Nancy Drew, but I was on my way to lunch.

No I do not believe that your generalization has any merit because I don't believe that sororities are a popularity contest. Mine was full of girls from a wide variety of different backgrounds and sure we had parties and fun, but we also did a lot to give back to the community. Did we vote people in? Sure. But none of those decisions were based on a girls' hairstyle or what her father did for his job or any other shallow reason. It was no different than going to a job interview...you pick the person that you think would be best suited to fit in with everyone else.

I'm sorry your school's Greek system sucked, but just because it was that way there doesn't mean that it's that way everywhere.

I'm in late on this conversation, but still, ditto this.

I was an Alpha Omicron Pi. It was a great experience, and brought me out of my awkward, shy shell. I'm really glad I did it. Living with 40+ girls was definitely challenging at times, but I had a leg up on learning how to handle leadership roles, living/ working with difficult people and public speaking. I'd totally do it again, and encouraged my cousin, sister and other cousins to go greek. I totally got my money's worth out of the fees, but understand that they can be prohibitive for some people. I worked 2 jobs through college and managed to participate, which was great.

I'm pretty sure that is a southern thing.  I was an AOPi in the midwest and we most certainly didn't wear dresses and pearls to games.

Honestly this makes it sound like you are still bitter over not getting a bid. This generalization is a bit like saying every single person who lives in CA is a natural blonde.

You can't really judge what the inside of an organization is like unless you have been part of it.

I was a ZTA in college and our chapters are all very different from campus to campus. Perhaps a better statement would have been "The Greeks on my particular campus weren't my cup of tea for X reason" as opposed to being incredibly rude to the entire Greek system who donate thousands of hours and dollars to a number of different philanthropies, educate campuses on date rape, sponsor women's defense classes and spawn friendships that last decades.

Just some friendly advice from a tattooed, pierced, pearl wearing individual who happened to join a sorority in college.

I went to Oklahoma State and some ladies wore jeans and t-shirts while others wore dresses. It usually depended on the weather. However, I didn't see any people dressed like sluts. We kept it classy. From my travels I have noticed the sorority women in TX and the deep south usually dress up for football games.

  • My culinary school didn't have fraternity/sorority. So no.  I went to a college here before culinary school and my sister was a KD but I couldn't afford it and my parents weren't helping with that. So I hung out with her and her friends. :) I'm glad I made the choice I did.

  • Were you in a (social) sorority? Yes

If so, which sorority? Delta Zeta

Are you happy with your decision to either join or not join one? Yes it was a great experience! I had a great college experience and felt like I met a lot more people because of everything the sorority did (not just drinking!) Some of myy best friends are my sorority sisters to this day.
