The sorority conversation in the DD post has me wondering about whether or not my fellow bumpies were in sororities or not.

Were you in a (social) sorority?

If so, which sorority? 

Are you happy with your decision to either join or not join one?

I was.  Kappa Delta.  The only reason was because I was a legacy (Mom and sister were KDs, too).

It was fun, but kind of "eh" at the same time.

I thought about it, but I was so ove-the-top shy in college that I never got up the guts to do it.

I never did join one. I worked full time on top of going to school full time so I didn't have much time to do anything else.

Yes, I was, Sigma Kappa.  

It was great for me the first couple of years because it was a tremendous boost to my confidence and leadership abilities.  It helped me become more connected on campus and was a springboard for involvement in other activities.  My junior and senior years of college, I was less satisfied with the experience - too much drama, and I was very busy with academics and other activities.  Overall though I am still glad that I did it!

Were you in a (social) sorority? No, but I was in a professional co-ed fraternity. I seriously considered pledge Chi-O when I transferred to the U of A, but in the end, I decided it wasn't really for me.

If so, which sorority? 

Are you happy with your decision to either join or not join one? I'm glad I joined the business fraternity. It led to a lot of wonderful friendships and really helped me with my public speaking skills (I held 2 offices). I sometimes wish I'd done the social sorority thing, but I don't regret anything about my college experience, so I'm fine with having missed that.

Yep, Pi Beta Phi (Pi Phi). I liked it for the most part. Although, living in a house with 40+ other girls had its moments. It was a great learning experience on many levels and I do appreciate my time spent there.

Nope!  I went to a small state school and just didn't want to have to follow a bunch of social rules to be a part of a group.  It wasn't my thing.  BUT my sister and a few of my close friends were in sororities that were very popular in school and they loved it.  SO I think it not only depends on your preference but also the school you go to.

Nope, I went to a community college for the first two years and then to a commuter school for the last two so I never had the opportunity. I was always a bit envious of my friend who was in one though because she seemed to make a lot of friends that she still talks to today and it seemed to open up a lot of opportunities for her like studying abroad and doing different things. I never left my hometown for college and it kinda sucked.

I thought about it, but I didn't want to spend the money on membership fees. (Plus I'm not really into partying, and that's sort of a big part of most sororities.) I had a couple friends in KD, and they loved it, so I just lived vicariously.

I almost joined Kappa Delta, but then decided not to.  I regretted it a little bit freshman year, but then after that I was happy with my decision.  Anyone could go to the fraternity functions so it wasn't that big of a deal!

No, I never joined one. I was asked my freshman year to pledge but the girls in this specific soroity were not very nice so I opted out.

Are you happy with your decision to either join or not join one?  Yes.  I was very active in my sorority, as well as Panhellenic Council (the governing body.)  I was also a member of Order of Omega which was the Greek Honors.  I severed as President of Order of Omega my last year.

I was never in one, nor was I interested at that time.  I fancied myself a "hippie" in college and hippies didn't join sororities! 

Looking back I realize that a lot of girls form really tight friendships in sororities and I probably missed out on that.

I was not in a sorority because my school did not have any (the fashion institute of Technology). It's probably better they didn't because I graduated in a class of 85% female! There was enough crazyness and drama with out the added stress of sororities!

However, if I had gone to another school I would have rushed. 2 of my sisters are in Phi Sigma Sigma and I have aunts who were Alpha Delta Pi.

Are you happy with your decision to either join or not join one? Sure. I rushed my first semester freshman year and it was a great way to make friends and such. I didn't stay in it all through college though.

Agree wholeheartedly with the bold part.  I was a member of a coed philanthropic fraternity (Alpha Phi Omega) and it was a great social outlet, without all the idiocy and popularity contests that frats/sororities often have.

Are you happy with your decision to either join or not join one?  Very happy.  I had friends in many different sororities and got to go to all the frat parties.  My school was very cliquey... certain sororities only socialized with certain fraternites and didn't even associate with girls in other sororities.  I wasn't into that at all.  I liked having the freedom to choose my own friends

Are you happy with your decision to either join or not join one? Yes, I went to a large state school and being part of the Greek system made it seem a lot smaller.  I'm pretty shy and being in the house helped me come out of it a little bit.  I'm also still very close with a lot of girls I met.  If I had to do it over, I would definitely do it again!

No sorority here.  It was so expensive at my college and I just didn't want to pay for friends

Wouldn't change it.  They ended up being the source of so much drama later on.

I was a Delta Zeta. I'm very happy I joined. I'm still very close with my sorority sisters and my bridesmaids were all from my sorority.

Me too!! I was super active and held a lot of positions. I'm still very close with my pledge sisters, my big, and several other sisters. I loved it. We did do our share of partying, but we spent a lot of times with philanthropies and enjoying our sisters. It wasn't all just about getting drunk with the fraternity brothers.

I'm really sorry you don't like the reputation that your choices has; but my experience has backed up that the greek system was mostly a giant popularity contest.  The sororities at my school vied for the most attractive girls.  Its pretty much like politics in the grown-up world.  I realize that there were some very nice, friendly people in the greek system; but it was organized in such a way as to encourage shallow behavior.

I notice that, while you hate the generalization, you didn't deny that it had merit.

Are you happy with your decision to either join or not join one? I thought the sorority rush was super boring, whereas the fraternity rush was really fun.  So, I tagged along with my guy friends to do the paintballing, rock climbing, BBQ type rush events at the fraternities instead.  Which actually then resulted in my being a "rush girl" for two different fraternities for a few years afterwards.  I went to a relatively small private school and the fraternities were a much bigger deal than sororities, so I am completely fine with my decision.

If so, which sorority? Omega Phi Alpha

Are you happy with your decision to either join or not join one? I felt good about joining because of the service aspect. We were very involved with several service projects both at the university and the within the community. It was a rewarding experience.

My mom went to Purdue and was in a sorority, so when I went to Purdue I could have gotten in, by passing the rush and hazing or whatever. I was very shy and self conscious then and wanted to be as invisible as possible, so I didn't join.

It doesn't matter to me now. I like where my life is so I wouldn't change anything in fear that one small thing would snowball and I could be living somewhere across the country married to a very different person...haha.

I jointed Tri Delta at Oklahoma State. It was one of my best decisions in college. I am still very involved with the organization. I am the alum advisor for the chapter at Creighton University.

Sorry that I didn't have time to respond more fully before, Nancy Drew, but I was on my way to lunch. 

No I do not believe that your generalization has any merit because I don't believe that sororities are a popularity contest. Mine was full of girls from a wide variety of different backgrounds and sure we had parties and fun, but we also did a lot to give back to the community. Did we vote people in? Sure. But none of those decisions were based on a girls' hairstyle or what her father did for his job or any other shallow reason. It was no different than going to a job interview...you pick the person that you think would be best suited to fit in with everyone else.

I'm sorry your school's Greek system sucked, but just because it was that way there doesn't mean that it's that way everywhere.

There is so much more to sorority life that partying.  I joined for the philanthropy and leadership opportunities.  I guess when you are on the outside of an organization you can only really judge it by stereotypes.

There is so much more to sorority life that partying.  I joined for the philanthropy and leadership opportunities.  I guess when you are on the outside of an organization you can only really judge it by stereotypes.

 Are you happy with your decision to either join or not join one? absolutely, the college years were def some of the best years of my life so far. I met a lot of cool people and had an awesome experience so I don't feel like I missed out on anything.

Some girls formed Gamma Alpha Lamda (yea... just cuz it spells GAL), a Christian sorority. They got it chartered and built a house. I was Alpha class, but once the house was built, the fees were just like all the other Greek ones and I could no longer afford the time or money.

I have absolutely no regrets from college. I worked 2 jobs and did school so there was little time for the volunteering and events that the Greek system required of me.

And yes, I'm glad I pledged. I had a blast in college although that would have happened with or without the sorority.

I didn't know jeans and t-shirts were so scandalous. My favorite part of people's generalizations is that they assume one person's behavior at one school means all sorority girls are partying sluts who wear inappropriate clothing. What about the sorority that raised 10 million dollars in 4 years for St. Jude?
