For shtiz and giggles - if you could pick where your kids are going to college

Re: For shtiz and giggles - if you could pick where your kids are going to college

  • Somewhere approximately 2 hours from wherever we're living at the time :). Thats what DH and I did (but came from opposite directions) and I really think it was key. Far enough to stay on campus on the weekends, but close enough so that a visit is easy when desired. I'm also in favor of a mid size school.

  • I have no desire for DD to go to some big Ivy League school like Harvard or Yale- they are too stuffy for my taste.  I want her to go to a good state school back east. UNC Chapel Hill, Duke, Emory, or Univerisity of Tennessee would all be just find. I want her to have a great college experience like I did in a college town. Join a sorority, go to the football games, go out and drink 25 cent beers on Saturday nights. Of course I want her to get a good education and do something with her life (doctor or lawyer) but both my sister and I went to really good state schools- we both have great careers and are well rounded people who look back on our college days and say "we had a blast".

If she wanted to go where I went in Ohio that would be fine, but the weather is COLD there, I don't think she would like it. There would be NO WAY I would allow her to go to UNLV like DH did- we are moving as far from Vegas and we can get and I don't want her going to school out here. Now she could go to my dad's alma mater which is Purdue, or Ohio State (where he went to medical school) that would be okay.

All I know is DD is going to college, it was not an option for me or my sister- it was never do you want to go, it was where do you want to go? I will hopefully influence her decision a little, HAHA!

    An SEC school.

My preference would be this order: Mississippi State (b/c Alex and I both went there and it is a great school with a small college feel), LSU (I'm from New Orleans), UGA, Auburn, then anywhere else in the SEC but Ole Miss, Alabama or Florida.  I cannot stand thsoe three.

LSU Smile That's where I went!! And I would love for my kids to go there.  My DH went to Louisiana Tech (which I'd prefer them not to) and he went to LSU dental.

  • DH and I are Jayhawks through and through.  So KU would be ideal.  That said we are aiming to save enough to pay for 4 years of in state tuition, so a kansas school would be good.  the worst scenario would be mizzou, we might disown them, or at least make them eat in a different room than the rest of the family at thanksgiving Big Smile rock chalk.

i'm kidding by the way, sort of

  • Most moms dream of there sons becoming lawyers, doctors, the next president? But if I have my way, Jack will go to technical school or apprentice to be a plumber, electrician, mechanic etc.

Thought behind this is there are no huge student loans to start your life with, you make a very good living, and your services will always be needed.

  • DH and I both went to UW so obviously UW. I think we would be ok with any big 10 school. Just as long as she goes to school away from home and lives on her own. Madison is 90 miles away and that was a perfect distance not too far not too close.

  • It's funny you ask this, because I was just thinking the other day how odd I think it is to have this planned out for your kids.  Anywho, my "plan" is for them to go to whatever school they want (our job is to make sure their options aren't limited by their preparation or finances) and to hopefully raise them as to not be like me who used my choice as an excuse to go as far away from my family as physically possible. ;)

  • Boston College!  We both went there and live relatively close.  I think DHs dream is for the boys to play football there - though given their size I doubt that will happen!

DH and I went to American and felt it was a great place. DH also went to Michigan and I would LOVE him to go there. I want him to go where he is happy, but I woe prefer a school in a city rather than in the middle of no where. College is not just about the university campus. It's also about the experiences (night life, internships, etc) that are outside the campus limits.
Speaking of UofM, I'm in Ann Arbor right now:) we're heading put of town and stopped to grab something to eat and change the kids into pjs. But, we're loyal to MSU since that's where DH went to school!

  • Well, if she doesn't go to UVA I am afraid there is going to be trouble.  We can probably work it out in time, with family counseling provided that the school she ends up going to instead is not Tech.

Now I will go search for JessandJeremy's response, which is probably the exact opposite of mine ; )

hmm...Carnegie Mellon so that I can see him a lot (and be completely broke)? ;)  lol.  um..honestly, I don't have an allegiance to any school...I went to Kent State, so I can't imagine him wanting to go there...and DH went to a small Catholic college here, and I don't really want him to go there...so...his options are open  Stick out tongue

lol - I went there too and feel no nostalgia for it whatsoever.

To answer the original Q - DH is attempting to brainwash them for Baldwin Wallace (small Methodist college in NE Ohio) - I like Ohio State for a state school.  Honestly, I would love them to go somewhere in a big city (Chicago or NY).  Wherever they go I REALLY want them to study abroad.

  • DH and I talk about this a lot.  Our kid is a Nole by default.  We went to rival schools for undergrad (Clemson and SC) and FSU for law school.  So FSU is our neutral territory.  Plus, it's close enough to us.

I always joke that if C wants us to pay, he had better not go to UF.  Or Miami, lol.

Not in a construction slump - lots of unemployed tradesmen right now.  My dad (who also has a teaching degree) is now a building inspector (was a union electrician and then started his own business), and towns are cutting them too.  And a good living is debatable - the hourly rate for a licensed plumber or electrician is nowhere near the take home pay, whether they are self-employed or through a company, and you really need to save for the times you are unemployed or your hours are cut.  My dad has loved his jobs, but DH and I started with no SL debt either and are in much more stable jobs than construction will ever be.  If that is what someone wants to do, I'm all for it, but it's no safer than most white collar jobs (and it's also ridiculously hard on your body to do it for a career).  Sorry for the lecture, but I hear this a lot from my coworkers (all with PhDs), and it makes me laugh and shake my head.  :)

This.  Except we won't be broke Mousey - they'll both be getting full rides - hello our babies are geniuses, duh.

Not that anyone will see this with how late I'm answering, but... As a Car.negie Mel.lon alum (and current student...wha?), it's fabulous for some things and totally NOT worth the tuition for other things. So, unless J&J know they want to go into CS or drama (hee!), I'd push them AWAY from it. (Hmm...are they going to withhold my degree because I said that?)

Anywho... To answer the original question, do you have to ask? Look at my siggie! ;) No really, we'll be happy if either of them go to Texas, but if they want to go to Stanford, MIT, even locally to UW, that would be okay. I just want them to go to a good school, and I'd prefer they didn't go to one of the (many) schools I dislike. Stick out tongue I think the more important thing is choosing a school that's appropriate to your interests, and if you aren't sure what they are, a school that excels at a broad range of curriculum.

But as far as sports go, they'll be raised as Longhorns. Hook 'em!

  • Super easy...Harvard!  Of course Dh and I would need to move closer to that side of the country, but yeah, we joke around and say all the time he is Harvard bound!

  • My family has a strong history with Marquette so I think it would be wonderful if my children carried on that tradition.  It is also a Catholic university so I like that as well.

My DH has attended three different state schools.  If my kids were going to attend a state school then I'd want them to pick one that specializes in their area of interest.

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.
