For shtiz and giggles - if you could pick where your kids are going to college

Where would you send them?

Let's pretend for a moment we have any control over their choices - would you want them to go to your or dh's alma mater?  Why or why not?

Re: For shtiz and giggles - if you could pick where your kids are going to college

  • Believe it or not - dh and I discuss this a lot.

If they are good at sports (aka not get their sports genes from mommy) - I would love for them to go to my alma mater, Michigan.

Otherwise I think Dh's alma mater, Penn, would be awesome.  Close to home and a great education.  Oh yeah, I've also recently just approved Princeton.

  • Haha...this has not once crossed my mind.

DH went to school for broadcasting out East...and I went to a school near where we live now.

  • oh wait, i'm changing my answer...  Oxford...we will move over and get citizenship somehow ahead of time.. :)  I'd love to live in Europe again!
  • Well, you might laugh but I have been in the thought lately that maybe kids don't have to go to college.. Yes if you want to be a doctor, lawyer Ect college is a must. But in many ways I think kids run off to school not knowing what they want to do amd waste the time partying/drinking ect.. Which is what I did! I didnt get a real education until I went to grad school for something that I was passionate abt..that being said.. I would love for him to go to a school in MA ESP if we are living in the south still!

(BTW: DH is getting his Italian citizenship soon and Will gets his shortly after that. I keep worrying they are going to leave for Cuba without me! Wink I have to wait a few years for mine, but I fantasize about relocating to Europe sometimes!)

  • DH and I talk about this all the time! We would love for one of our kids (at least) to go to university of Oklahoma, my Alma mater. I wouldn't mind visiting New York often, so any Manhattan school would be nice. All I know is my kids WILL attend university, if they have the ability.

  • Ironically whenever we are on campus for ball games we tell DS "this is where you will live" "This is where you and your fraternity brothers will go drinking / breakfast at 3am".  He's being raised to be a Purdue Boilermaker but we might let him have some inputWink  As long as he becomes self- supporting by the age of 25 I doubt we care.

We've actually blackballed all NYC colleges even though DH and I met at NYU.

We just feel that NYC is way too much for a 18 year old to handle.  Especially at a school like NYU where there is no campus.  Columbia is slightly better.

  • Hmm.  I can't say that I have a particular preference as to where he will go, but I want to help him figure out what path he wants to take and the best way to get the end result that he wants.  I went to the University of Louisville because I had free tuition (and could live at home) so essentially I got a free bachelors degree.  We are a UofL household (sports wise) but that wouldn't be my reason for wanting him to go there (unless he's good at sports).

I would have loved to become a marine biologist, my parents never took me seriously and never tried to encourage me to cultivate that interest.  My mom actually said that wasn't allowed since I would have to live on the coast somewhere.  Maybe I would have been a marine biologist and maybe not but I have to say I'm somewhat resentful that my parents didn't support my (possibly silly) childhood dream.

If DS wanted to be say, a pilot, I would put in in flying lessons in high school.  Try to get him to go to Purdue (or any other place a similar degree) to get a bachelors and commercial pilots license, and then possibly discuss joining the Air National Guard to get his hours.  DH's parents were very hands off and didn't encourage him or try to help him find the path that he wanted to be on.  Which is why (even though he's in a very successful well paying career) he's just going through with finishing a bachelors degree.  I want to give DS every opportunity to find success in a career that he chooses, and hopefully enjoys.

  • DH and I went to American and felt it was a great place. DH also went to Michigan and I would LOVE him to go there. I want him to go where he is happy, but I woe prefer a school in a city rather than in the middle of no where. College is not just about the university campus. It's also about the experiences (night life, internships, etc) that are outside the campus limits.

  • DH and I met at our alma mater - a small, private, (snooty), liberal arts college in Maine.  It's a big deal to be a "legacy" there (mostly because a lot of the legacy families make big time donations - not the case here!), so we joke all the time about doing whatever we can to convince her NOT to go there.  : )

That said, I'm about 95% certain that that's where she'll end up going, just to spite us.  Stick out tongue  It wouldn't be the worst thing though - DH and I have some great memories and friends from there.

  • My husband went to U of Michigan and I was accepted but wasn't able to attend (too expensive, even with loans and scholarships) so I guess that would be fine. I don't have any particular attachment to them attending a standard college but would like them to attend some sort of secondary educational facility. I would love if one of them would take an interest in the arts or culinary and would support them if they chose to go that route instead of attending university.

  • Well, we are some of the biggest Auburn fans (both of us are Alums) you will ever meet & DS will grow up to love Auburn football, no doubt about that. I honestly want him to go anywhere he wants to go, as long as he goes and as long as it is a "good" school. We would love it if he *wanted* to go to Auburn (which more than likely he will) but since there is a strong possibility we will still be living here, I won't be broken hearted if he does not want to. I think there is a HUGE importance on NOT going to school where you grew up (if you are fortunate enough to live in a huge college town like we are). I would love for him to "branch out", expericne the "world" etc., but that is why one of our most important goals is to make sure we travel, a lot, in the US as well as abroad. So, if he goes to Auburn, great. Wink  DH & I LOVE our school, our son will love it, so I think there is a strong possibility he will go here.

Of course, if he is big like we think he may be, we want him to play football/all sports. If he ends up playing football, we will highly discourage him from going anywhere outside the SEC, lol. Not that he would want to! But then that automatically knocks out schools we would not want him at anway....MSU (yuck, not good enough), AL (hell no), UGA (heck no), so hopefully the AU recruiters would be good to him. He will also more than likely be musically inclined and DH & I were in the marching band (we met there) so we would of course love to see him in the AU band.

We will be happy wherever he goes with the exception of UA (of course). I think DH would have a really hard time giving them our $. If he wanted to go to UA Law, it wouldn't be so bad, but for that I would rather him go to UF. As long as he goes to a fairly large, good school, we will be happy. :)  But something tells me our boy was destined for the AU. National Champs BTW. hehe. :)

  • We're planning on sending all of ours to where DH teaches.  It's a good school (where I went for grad school) and tuition is free for us.  I also like that it is local.

  • We tell Avi all the time that she is going to go to NC State and be an engineer.  DH's BS, MS, and PhD are from State, it's a good engineering school, and it is fairly cheap for in-state.  Hopefully she gets DH's spatial ability and engineering skills.

However, DH takes it a step further and tells here where she will go to elementary school - a charter school near us - because they had a really good Lego robot team when he judged the last competition (he's mentored a high school team that builds a real robot for the last 10 years).  https://www.firstlegoleague.org/  And he also shows her how to use each tool as he does projects.  He's a nut.

Believe it or not, we've actually never discussed the 'where' of college although we do assume our girls will go to college.  I would be fine if either/both of mine went to my alma mater (Princeton) although I don't feel any bias towards them going there.  I had a great experience but know they would have an amazing experience at many other colleges.  My husband went to Harvard and I think he's a bit more biased although neither one of us feel super strongly.

ETA: If our parents have any say in it though they would REALLY REALLY want our children to go to our respective schools b/c, in both cases, we have tons of family that went to where we each went.
