Preemies

Bottles?

Our girls came home a week ago and they have been using the 2 oz white ring bottles from the hospital. They take 2 oz almost every feed and sometimes want more so we need to transition to a real bottle.  We bought several varieties to try but the girls don't seem able to use them.  We have tried the tommy tippee, born free and nuby, all slow flow nipples.  The girls just seem exhausted using these and don't finish their food.  What type of bottle did u find that worked well for your lo? Should we try a faster flow nipple?  TIA.

Re: Bottles?

  • I used Dr Brown's bottles with a preemie nipple for a long time. The difference between the preemie & level 1 nipples (on Dr B's) are that the preemie nipples allow a little easier flow BUT smaller drops whereas the Level 1 are a little "slower" but have larger drops. Our feeding therapists told us that they were the best nipples for preemies because it keeps them from getting overwhelmed with too much liquid at once & helps them pace themselves but they don't have to put too much effort into so they don't tire out too quickly. Dr B's are a pain in the a*$ to clean but they really were the best bottles for DS.

  • I'm still using the same bottles that we did at the hospital. I tried transitioning him to an "at home" bottle with little success. I decided that we've had enough chaos - if he wants his Medela hospital-issue bottle with the green ring nipple, that's a-ok with me. He's eating well, and gaining well. Let good enough be. If you need to get a bigger bottle just attach the same nipple...but my DS noticed that trick at first, so I started preparing two of the hospital bottles.
  • Just noticed you said you came home only a week ago - that's a lot of bottles to cycle through. Maybe keep on the hospital bottle for a couple weeks as they transition. If you want to try a new one introduce it gradually and then stick with it for a bit.
  • Dr Browns with the preemie size nipple. Worked great.

  • Our speech pathologist told us to try a bottle for 16 straight feedings to know whether or not its a good match. you have to give LO a chance to learn that bottle. That being said, while Sam was in the NICU, they had me bring in bottles. He used: Mam, Born Free, Ventaire, Tommee Tippee, evenflo (alot like those hospital bottles), Nuk, Nuby, Adiri, Breastflow, Playtex Drop-ins with silicone naturalatch nipples, Dr. Browns....

He came home using the Drop-ins, transitioned to the Evenflo and now uses Dr. Brown's exclusively for milk and Evenflo or Born Free for juice. If you have the resources, meet with a speech pathologist/therapist. They can determine a plan for you.

I literally have a huge Rubbermaid tote with over 80 bottles. :( Feeding issues kept us from coming home.

Totally not being a snark here... but why are you giving your 4 month act/1 month adj. juice? I didn't think you were supposed to give them anything until 6 months?

Prune juice would be my guess.  Some babies have to take it.

  • Thank you all for your help.  We have only used the bottles once or twice because we have not been wanting to impact their feeds negatively.  I guess we can revisit them for a better trial period.  The only reason that we were trying to start on new bottles was the girls are working on taking more than 2 oz at a time.  I will also try to get some Dr B's.

  • Ditto everyone else. Dr. Brown's. I actually brought them in requesting they use them vs. the bottles they use as IMO the ones they used were too fast. He took to them right away & we think we went home a week earlier because of it! Good Luck!

I give LO prune juice too, but not enough for special bottles. I was just curious!

Prune juice or pear juice for constipation issues. Much better than giving him a suppository twice weekly. We use special bottles because the speech pathologist says its good for him to learn different nipples and styles of sucking, Since we only give 1 oz of juice a day, we use a different bottle once a day to help him train that mouth of his.
