How to "dry up"?

I have been EBF, but after talking with Pedi yesterday, we've decided to switch to formula.  Right now we are doing half formula and half BM because i have some frozen BM.  However, this morning i woke up (which really sucked because FINALLY Ike was sleeping, lol) because my boobs were rock hard and i was in crazy pain.  So what do i do to make my milk go away?

Re: How to "dry up"?

  • From what I remember when my sister had her kids, she wore sports bras that were a size smaller than normal.

  • I heard that wrapping your breast in cabbage leaves can help with drying up and discomfort, but mainly "time" is the only remedy to your milk drying up.

  • Are you stopping cold turkey?

I would pump and just drop a session every few days.  Give your body time to know to slow it down and eventually stop.

  • Hey girlSmile  What I did was for the first few days BF or pump every other feeding.  Then next couple days I did every two feedings.  By the end of the week I was just BF'ing once in the AM and once in the PM.  I had a couple more days that I BF'd once at night.

Ditto. This is what I did. Just lessen the pumping sessions gradually. Eventually, you'll have very little milk left.?

I have heard about the cabbage leaf thing but never tried.?

  • Hey! lol Does Matt know you are nesting/bumping, hee hee.

Thanks for the tip, i will email you, the past couple days have been a nightmare!

  • I can vouch for the cabbage leaves trick... sounds crazy, I know, but it works!  I'm still using them (it's been 2 days), but they are helping, and I can tell the difference when I don't have them on.  I would also suggest going the gradual route suggested by PP's.  I kind of did cold turkey, or rather, didn't wean slow enough, and I'm paying for it now (ouch!).  Good luck!!!
