Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Do you watch tv through netflix/hula, etc?

Dh and I are considering dropping our current cable provider - we generally only watch the standard channels and not cable channels anyway, and we pay an insane amount toward our dvr and other boxes a month.  So were debating about dropping them, and doing the Netflix tv thing, or Apple tv, or something of that nature.

If you do this, can you please tell me everything you know about it, how long after a show airs can you find it on Apple TV? We're debating about tivo, but theres also a monthly fee with that, on top of paying for the box originally.

Just looking for opinions, etc.

TIA.

  • We also got rid of cable, and now just have local channels. We use TiVo and Netflix, and it's perfect for us.

If there's something else I want to watch, I can generally find it online and then I either watch it on my laptop or on the big TV that we have our Mac Mini hooked up to.

  • We haven't had cable for almost three years.  We do netflix and my mom lets us use her hulu account.  and we do the redbox when we want a really new movie.  There is a ton of things on netflix and I like it because you can keep the movies as long as you want without late charges, I have had a movie for over a month before and then finally watched it.

  • We are huge sports fans. We dropped the movie channels but upgraded to high def for sports. We use Netflix for movies.

  • We just got a Roku and I love it.  It lets you watch stuff from Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Video, and a few others all on the tv.  My husband's kinda bummed because he can't watch Formula 1 races now, but otherwise we've been able to find everything we've wanted to see so far for free.

  • We got rid of our cable and switched to internet with netflix. Best decision we ever made. I love netflix. There's plenty of shows and movies on here to keep our entire family preoccupied. We don't even miss cable. They keep their programs on for a pretty long time and generally they have a date posted if it'll be going off soon. There are thousands of options for TV/Movies and at $10 (for 1 dvd out at a time and unlimited streaming) you can't really beat it. I haven't tried the others though, so I don't know how they compare.

  • We quit TV in November and its been awesome (well, after a long month of withdrawal). We intended to get netflix but never ended up doing that. Occasionally, we watch our shows on Hulu or directly on the channel's website (MTV, ABC Family,etc.). I really do love not having the distraction of the TV, though. If only I could get the courage to drop the internet...

  • We haven't had cable since 2001, so ten years now. We watch older TV shows through Netflix. We used to watch on our computers, but got a Roku box for Christmas and now it streams directly onto our TV set.

The only show we've ever followed in real time was Lost and that was available without cable, and also on NBC.com. I have no idea what the "hot" shows are these days that aren't available through network TV.

We pay $16/month for Netflix, which includes having physical DVDs, and the Roku box was a gift.

  • We have Netflix (DVD and streaming through the XBox) and we pretty much ONLY watch tv series. Hardly any movies at all. We've been doing this for years and we never run out of shows :)
  • We only have local channels. It's about 15 channels but only 4 or 5 are worth watching.  We watch other stuff on the laptop from the channel's website. If I miss a show I know it will be on the website the next day and I can watch it at my leisure.  We also have netflix and I can watch some cable shows from there. They are older shows that I never saw because I haven't had cable in forever. I'm getting into Mad Men, Big Love, Weeds- all shows that I can't see on their website but I'm watching past seasons.  I would like to watch the current season but I like saving the money too much to justify cable.

No way!  I don't come across many other F1 fans.  DH & I were really into it before DD was born.  Now we just don't have the time to watch races unfortunately.  I see you're in Austin.  Is your DH planning on going to the US race?

We got rid of our cable about a year ago.  We just weren't watching enough to justify the huge expense.  Now we mostly use Netflix (primarily discs through mail) for movies and TV shows already on DVD.  We also watch current seasons of TV shows on hulu (free ones, like The Office, Community, etc).  Occasionally we'll watch one live, but after years of having a DVR, I hate sitting through the long commercials.

As far as I can tell he's the one and only person in Austin that's excited about the track, but he's certainly trying to make up for everyone else's lack of enthusiasm ;)

this is exactly what I want to do also!! we are paying 80/mo for basic cable and dvr and its just too much so this sounds great for us!! also when you do it thru xbox gold dont you get espn also b/c DH is a huge sports fan so that would be great!

  • We dropped our cable and use Netflix, Hulu, etc. We have a Mac Mini that is dedicated to our TV and it runs a program called Plex that integrates Hulu, Netflix, etc. all together. I think it's similar to Apple TV. We can also "DVR" one show at a time, so we do have that option.

We're happy we did it. It saves so much money, and as we all know, there is really no time to schedule TV watching with little ones anyway! We can DVR or watch online most things that we want to see.
