Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Should I wake her?

DD has been sleeping for almost 3 hours now and my breasts are starting to hurt! I normally feed her every 2 hours and yesterday she was cluster feeding. I was planning on shifting her carefully to the car seat and going for a wall but now I am thinking I may need to feed her.

Re: Should I wake her?

  • If your breasts hurt I would wake her and feed her. You don't want to end up with clogged ducts. She will probably eat and go back to sleep anyway!! :)

  • Never, never, NEVER wake a sleeping baby. She will let you know when she's hungry!
  • you don't have a pump I guess?  I agree w/ pp, if your breast hurt it's time to feed.  Maybe you can do it carefully and she will stay asleep?

Love her name BTW ;)  middle name?

  • Do you have a pump?  If so, then just pump some off to make you feel comfortable (you can also hand express if you don't have a pump).  Don't empty the breast, just pump off enough so that it doesn't hurt you anymore.  Don't wake her - if she's sleeping, then she needs sleep more than she needs to eat right now.
  • As long as your pedi didn't say she needs to eat every "X" number of hours, I would let her sleep.  I would maybe pump a bit to relieve the pressure if it's super uncomfortable, maybe take a hot shower but take it from a mom whose kids have *never* taken a three hour nap....sleep is precious.
  • Her middle name is Lynn. Wanted to name her Brooklyn but DD just liked Brooke... so it was a compromise. Plus, Lynn is my middle name.

I do have an double electric Medela pump (however you word that) but I haven't even taken it out of the bag! I have no idea how to use it or the tools to store. I meant to do it this weekend and now I am kicking myself for procrastinating.

  • I made the mistake of waking DD to feed her a couple weeks ago, she wouldn't eat, and cried for 30min and finally went back to sleep. The pressure wasn't relieved and I had an incredibly grumpy baby on my hands. Now when I feel over full I just hand express some milk into a towel just enough to feel relief and then wait for baby to wake up.
  • What did your pedi tell you to do?  At 3 weeks I was told to wake her to feed her.

  • I would say pump and let a sleeping baby sleep. BTW, our DD's name is Brooklyn!
  • I say pump or hand express. Do NOT wake a sleeping baby unless your pedi recommended it. She is beautiful btw!
