What say ye, 9-12? Or Yankee. Or both.
Rageaholic supermodel Naomi Campbell is considering "every option available" to stick it to Cadbury for using her name in a chocolate ad, which she finds racist:
I am shocked. It's upsetting to be described as chocolate, not just for me, but for all black women and black people. I do not find any humour in this. It is insulting and hurtful.
And here I thought that Naomi's hostile, whiny, possibly perjurious testimony at that Sierre Leone blood diamond trial meant she was allergic to court.
For the record, I support Naomi becoming a race crusader. About time society find a productive use for the wrath of Campbell! Let's see you compare Obama to a monkey near Naomi Campbell's French-manicured fists of fury, hmm? [Independent]

Re: Is this racist?
Ha. I dunno if it's racist but it's probably discriminatory.
Nay Nay is cray cray for sure though.

Perfect name for your DH. Do you ever get tired of us constantly hitting on your husband through you?
I didn't even make the connection of comparing the chocolate to her skin color. I guess I'm a little slow.
I'm curious about this from a reversed stand point- if it were white chocolate and it was like, "Move over Cindy Crawford", would that be racist? (not specifically to you, Sweets, but to everyone).

it's interesting... some states have a right to publicity, so that celebrities can protect their likenesses. it isn't federal though. and regardless, it wasn't bright to use her without her consent in an at all questionable way.
i watched an ep of house the other day and hugh laurie asked if a mole or something was "beyonce brown" or "halle berry brown." i think the point was that he was being racist, but now i wonder if they also got permission from beyonce and berry.
Nope. No one would bat an eyelash. This is what drives me nuts about this stuff. I truly believe our society has gotten hyper-sensitive to this type of thing.
Yes, I can see her getting pissed over using her name w/o permission, but otherwise, it's stupid.
Sorry, I know my opinion is unpopular, but it really does drive me up the wall.
Yes, it's racist. It's also not the first time cadbury does it.

And I don't think she needs to give permission if the picture was taken at a public event since she is a public figure.
It's not the picture she's suing over. It's her name. They're not using the picture in the ad campaign.

If they were saying something derogatory, yes I can see it... But they're not. It's a reference to her skin color. It's simply stating a fact. How is that racist?
Oh I know but other people seemed more annoyed that she didn't give consent for her name.
Here is another racist ad, this one was actually banned:

Maybe its because I haven't seen the commercial, but I am not sure why people are upset. I don't get their excuse. They said Trident is showing offensive stereotypes and ridiculed black culture but it seemed they chose the man because they thought he was cool. Why is the depiction negative? Was he doing something offensive?

If it bothers you guys, when something like that happens, make it a big deal. It is not big deal, because no one says anything.

Personally one of the reasons I don't say anything is because I don't think anyone will take me seriously. It'll be like, "Pshw. You're white. Why would you possibly be offended by anything racial? You're in the political majority!"

Well I think that is unfair. I am super against reverse racism. But I guess my opinion doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things. If it makes you feel better, I almost got into a fight with a woman in Target one time because she told me, and I quote "That's right, run away little white girl (i am latin btw)". If I would have told her to "run away little black girl" (which I would never do), shiit would have hit the fan. I don't get why she got to bring race into it. It had nothing to do with the situation.

the accent was actually a parody. Have you ever seen minstrel or black face? It's the over the top "buffoon" like qualities that are always used to paint Blacks in a simple light.
Again I didnt see the commercial so I don't know what he sounds like. I know what black face is and agree that that is indeed racist.

I doubt they would have Nicole Kidman there and call her vanilla or someone asian and call it yellow. You don't see how comparing skin color is offensive?
i would like an example plz. whither the white racism? and yes, i am being serious.
And no one would take it seriously because white don't suffer institutional racism. I don't see what;'s so hard to understand about that. If you suffer an isolated incident of bias, prejudice or discrimination ypu just go home and it's okay.
But minorities are constantly being assaulted in the media. Three different incidents have already been linked here. can you link a "racist" white ad?
Doh! Silly me.
About 6 years ago, DH and I went to a Szechuanese restaurant in our local Chinatown (Called the International District, or ID). It had been highly recommended by a co-worker of DH's, who was from Taiwan.
We walked in the doors and the hostess told us there were no tables available. We could see the restaurant and out of about 20 tables, only one was being used. We just kind of looked at her. She repeated that there were no tables available and we turned to walk away.
As we were walking out, an Asian family was walking in. They asked for a table and were immediately seated.
This place didn't take reservations.
Walla.

No, I do not see how pointing the color of someones skin is racist. If you were saying/making assumption ABOUT said person BASED on their skin color, then yes. If they were saying something derogatory about her skin color, then yes. But, there is NOTHING even close to that. I just can't call this racism.
well case closed then! Why didn't you declare this sooner? The fact that this is the third racist ad they have published means nothing because blacks are too sensitive and we should be allowed to compare them to food.
Playing devil's advocate, but what about ads depicting "white trash"? And what about college institutions that only allow a specific race (non white). Wouldn't that be discrimination based on a race by an institution? In essence, institutional racism?

No, it wouldn't be racist because the power structure is framed as such that whites have all the power.
I love that you worked in walla (my personal favorite) but not getting seated at an asian restaurant as a result of your color is discriminatory not racist.
what ad depicts white trash? and what college only allows in blacks?
I can see that more as a class issue not a racial issue. "White Trash" are usually distiguished as being of a poorer class, not a different race.

frankly, i don't see how one incident at one chinese restaurant is even comparable to international ad campaigns. but i will grant that that does look like racism. i've been to restaurants where i was treated differently as well and i know it happens.
but seriously, can you think of anything more uh, official?
How do you figure? They based their discrimination on my skin color, which designates my race. How exactly is that not racist?

I still say there is a question as to whether it's racist or not. A racist comment has some sort of negative or derogative connotation to it... Don't see that here. Do you?
This is exactly why I said what I did about white people and race. If something happens to a white person that is blatently racist, it's swept under the rug and given the appelation of "discriminatory", not racist. I was being judged on the basis of my skin color.
And no, I don't have anything more "official". I don't pay attention to that in advertising.
Now if you want to talk about sizeism or sexism in advertising, I'm your woman.
