Toddlers: 24 Months+

If your crib converts to a bed, a question!

DD is still in her crib. She has never tried to get out, not once. She seems to like it. But we decided if she hasnt climbed out by her b-day in September we are going to transition to the bed at that time. We were thinking of making a big deal out of it by painting her room and getting a new duvet and sheet set as part of her b-day gift. She seems excited.

Anyway, we have never tried to convert the crib to a bed. Do we need a new mattress? I am assuming yes, is it a twin bed that it converts into?

Re: If your crib converts to a bed, a question!

  • It depends. Most convert to a toddler bed and a full-size bed. What was your plan? If you are just going to the toddler bed, you won't need a new mattress (or sheets). If you are going to the bed, you will likely need a full-size mattress and bedding.

  • I think it depends on the crib. Ours converted to a toddler bed/daybed or a full size bed (with one of the sides of the crib becoming the headboard I think.) So if you convert it to a toddler bed, you can just use the same mattress and sheets. If you convert it to an actual bed, you will need a new mattress/box spring, and if it is like ours, a bed frame.

  • We converted DD to a toddler bed and used her crib mattress. She will be three in July and doesn't quite weigh 30 lbs so there was no need  to give her a bigger bed. We did not need to purchase new sheets but we did and allowed DD to pick them out to make converting the bed a positive experience for her.
  • What PP stated.  We converted ours to a toddler bed (used the same mattress).

When we decide to convert to the twin of course we'll need new mattresses than.

We converted DS's crib a couple weeks ago to a toddler bed.  He "helped" me convert it.  He napped in it well then the first night tried to fine the parts to make it back into a crib.  I distracted him with a book and he hasn't had any problems since.  He calls me when he wants to get out and I only found him on the floor once.  Good luck.

DS was the same way about not trying to get out of his crib. We decided to convert to the toddler bed after we moved and used the same mattress. We won't be purchasing a new mattress until we convert it to the full size bed... which will be never because they stay little forever, right?! :)

Our crib converted by taking off the front part of the crib and replacing it with a bed rail so our mattress stayed.
