Baptism question...

I just got off the phone with the Priest at the Church that we want to have our baby baptized at, which is also where we got married. They do baptisms one day a year because they are only open from May through October. The date they've chosen this year is August 21st, my due date is July 10th. I don't think that is too early to be doing this, but the Priest asked several times during the phone call if I was sure I wanted to do it that early.

So my question is, is it too early??

Re: Baptism question...

  • No? I mean, strict Catholics (not sure if you're Catholic) don't even take the baby out of the house before they're baptized.

I was going to have mine Aug 7 (due Jul 16) but cant for unrelated reasons -- and actually think its LATE to have to wait until October.

  • We will baptize around 3 months old- in October.  Our church does baptisms almost every Sunday except not around Christmas or Easter.

  • I agree with PP Catholic's usually do it pretty early. We're putting ours off until Oct. only because H's sister and bil are the God parents and coming out from Texas- so we just did our best to accommodate to them, if it wasn't for that though we'd probably do it Aug. also.

  • It is a Catholic baptism, I was just worried about it being too early by the way the priest was talking. Unfortunately we may have to do it at another parish instead, I think the Godmother has a conflict on the chosen weekend. Thanks for your responses everyone.

  • I don't think it's too early IMO. We are probably going to have the baptism mid to late September.

  • I don't think it's too early at all.  Is it the custom at your church to wait until the baby is older?

  • No. In fact our really strict priest prefers it be done within 4 weeks. We're not going that close as we want a big party and I want to be up for it, but definitely within 6 or 8 weeks.
  • I'm due July 4th and out Baptism is also on August 21st! I agree with the previous post that very strict Catholics have it done very early anyway. I went to the baptism workshop and people thought it was wierd that I didn't even have the baby yet and I thought that was wierd because I was under the impression you had to get the baby baptized ASAP.

  • Traditionally, I believe it was done at soon as possible.  I was 6 weeks old, my brother was barely 3 weeks old.  My church now, you have to schedule them very far in advance, so it's not uncommon for baptisms to take place at 3 months+.  I am going to shoot for about 3 months, myself.

I agree. I plan to do it between 6-8 weeks.. so late August seems fine.
