If they seem like they'll fall apart going through a wash cycle, putting them in the dryer in a pillowcase with a damp towel can help break down any residues from being in the store.
FYI - this can also freshen dry-clean only clothing, if you didn't already know!
I'm glad to hear the two previous PPs said they never washed them. I don't see myself washing them....and I was starting to think I was a terrible mom.
I have the Shark Press & Refresh - which I love and use for lots of things. Maybe i'll run that over them a few times? Or just throw them in the dryer. I don't see myself washing them either.

I haven't really thought about it, but ultimately they'll get washed at some point so I guess no reason not to wash them in advance. They'll get dropped on the ground, drooled on, etc. (My kitties love stuffed animals and I wash theirs because they get all gross otherwise.)
Re: Would you wash stuffed animals?
Ok I think I'll use your idea (pillow case, air dry). I mean it can't hurt. Thanks!

I wash my kids stuffed animals all the time. The baby has only gotten a couple of stuffies and I haven't washed those.
I dry them in the dryer though, for as long as I can. Air drying seems like it might cause mold inside? Maybe I'm just paranoid.
