THIS is why I don't want a baby shower

My big-mouth brother- who also told me about my surprise shower- told me that people bought me a pack-n-play (that I already have), a baby bath tub (that I already have) and a baby monitor (that I already have). He got mad at me for buying the stuff. I told him I didn't know people bought me that and that I had marked them off my registry when I bought them so people would know I bought them if they CHECKED MY REGISTRY. It's why I don't want a shower- I just want to buy what I want to buy when I want to buy it. I have my registry so I know what I want and then I check CL and garage sales for it. The only thing I bought or am buying new is the crib, mattress, car seat, and nipples/pacis. Everything else I can get used for at least half-off, maybe more.

I know I sound ungrateful, but I'm not. Really. I greatly appreciate that my family/friends love me and LO enough to buy us things, especially big-ticket items.  I also saw that someone bought our expensive car seat and car seat. But I feel HORRIBLE that they are buying the expensive things. Money isn't infinite for most people. I don't want to count on someone to buy LO things she needs. That's our job as her mommy and daddy. And now I feel horrible because people bought things I already have, so I now have to CL the things I bought- not a big deal, but a hassle none the less. I just feel so guilty.

  • Honestly, I felt the SAME way... I hate people spending money on us. We bought the majority of stuff. One thing that helps me in accepting is that they are buying it for her and that they care enough to sacrifice to pay for it. Exchange the duplicates and show your gratfulness!  Its ok! Its for the baby, not for you, right?

  • You can return the things people bought you for the shower and use the credit to get things you do need, this is very common with baby gifts.

For the people that spent a lot on big ticket items, I'd probably let them know you're doing it, just tell them "Thank you so much for the SUPER generous gift!! Unfortunately we had already purchased a monitor, so I'm going to take this back and get the "X" that we really still need for our little one."

  • I know, you both are right. I am definitely going to show my appreciation, because I do appreciate it! I obviously have emotional scars from growing up, and it is hard to be the center of attention while people bring me expensive gifts for the sole purpose of recieving gifts. I would feel a lot better if they bought me blankets and books- small items.

  • I wouldn't CL the used things, I would justs take them back and use the store credit or whatever to buy other things that you need.

  • I am the same way about buying perfectly good used baby items.  I appreciate it when someone wants to buy us something new but I don't always see the point.

  • Honestly, I'd keep what I bought, thank everyone for the new stuff nicely, and return it for store credit for other things you do need. I wouldn't sell the CL stuff unless you just like the new stuff better.

  • Can't you just exchange the things other people bought off your registry for store credit and get other things you want?

  • Ditto exchanging the new stuff. I got a bunch of stuff I didn't need. By the time I returned it all I had more than enough store credit to buy what I did need...all the millions of little things babies require that add up.

From now on if you buy something that is on your registry, don't just mark it as bought. Take it off completely.
