Rolling on tummy at night and crying..what to do! ugh!

Hi! Question..was wondering what you all did or had any suggestions. Our four month old has just started rolling over on her tummy in her crib and instead of going to sleep starts crying and crying...she basically seems to sort of get stuck on the side of the crib and doesn't lie in the middle anymore on her back.

My husband and I go back in to the room and reswaddle her, reposition  her and give her the pacifier again, but she is right back on her tummy crying.

I guess we are worrying about the suffocation issue with the bumpers on the sides...or her getting stuck.

Did you have this issue and should we just ignore her and trust that she will know to turn her head to breathe? Oh the worrying us parents go through-lol!

thanks!

  • If you're worried about the bumpers, take them out or replace them with breathable bumpers.  If she continues to roll even after you move her back, then I would just let her be.  Make sure there's nothing in the crib that she can bury her face in, and she'll be ok.

  • I'd definitely start doing more tummy time to teach her how to enjoy it and roll back on her own. The way my doc explained it was as long as they get there themselves, then theyre ok, but I might use breathable bumpers if I were you.

  • What the other girls said -- I just wanted to add that once our kids could roll the swaddles were done.  They need their hands to get back over and they can't do that when swaddled.

  • I agree, no more bumpers and no more swaddle.  They learn to roll back over when they really want to - give it a few mins before running in to save her and she may just fall back asleep on her own.  ;)
  • Once they start rolling you can't really "keep" them on their backs, and it is pretty much safe for them to sleep on their tummies. As far as getting stuck, it is just a phase and will soon pass but for now, its just a lot of going in and flipping him back. We did it a lot with the twins for about a month and then they didn't need help anymore.

  • P.S. and yes, definitely no more swaddles and I would also take the bumpers out or replace with breathable ones.
