Protein in urine

At my 20 week appt, the NP said my urine was +1. She quickly said, "So drink more water," and then moved on. I had a bunch of questions this appt. and forgot to come back to that. From my understanding, protein in urine is either an early indicator of pre-eclampsia or a sign of wacky glucose levels . . . yes? No? Is plus 1 a common thing? I've been drinking more water since the appt and have googled my little heart out but am having trouble understanding what +1 could mean, if anything.

Re: Protein in urine

  • I had +1 protien much earlier in the pregnancy. I was told that it could be caused by a bunch of different things, such as minor infections. My doc was not concerned about it. He advised drinking more water and the protien in the urine went away. He did say that if it +1 and you drink more water and it either: stays or increases, then they have to do further tests to see about pre-e. I wouldn't worry. Was your BP normal?

  • Yep, BP was normal. I also had an issue with recurring UTI's when I was TTGP, so the potential for infection made me a little nervous. I added a cranberry pill to my water intake yesterday and will do so today too. Thanks Molly.

  • Mine was +1 also.  My midwife said to drink more water, but she also said that if you're not getting enough protein, your body will actually spill protein into your urine.  Backwards, right?  Guess our bodies are a little confused.  But yeah, drink more water, and try to up your protein intake a bit.
  • +1 is considered a trace amount. Just up your water intake and see what your doctor says next time. If your BP is okay, then you should be fine.

My high risk OB is more concerned with Ketones in my urine when it comes to GD. So don't worry about that just yet.

This would make sense! I've noticed that lately I've been getting lightheaded if I don't eat enough, and I am always craving "real food" as I call it. Not junk. Filling, healthy food. And I'm a vegetarian, so getting enough protein can be harder sometimes, especially with food aversions. I'm going to get hardcore about getting protein. Thanks, April!
