We are trying to come up with a name for my mom....she is very into her irish heritage, but the gaelic version of Grandmother is Mamo (hate it!)...
my favorites are MiMi (but my dog's name is Mia and we call her Mimi sometimes, so that's out) and Mom-Mom...I think I talked her into Mom-Mom...she said, "you're the mom, I don't want to take that away from you!"...and I told her, "I came up with it and would prefer it!" my MIL is Grammi.
what are your mother's, MIL's called/going to be called?
Re: Alternate name for Grandma
To my nephews, my mom is G-ma and my dad is Papa.
To DH's niece, his mom is Nama, and his dad is Tampa (hilarious, because it comes out sounding like tampon). Those names came about because his niece had speech trouble for a while.
My grandma is G.G. to her great-grandkids (stands for Great-grandma).
Both my mom and MIL are Grandma FirstName, and both dad and FIL are Grandpa FirstName. I knew someone who's grandkids called her Me-maw. There is also Granny, Gran, Gram, Nona, Nana. In German, Grandma is Oma, Grandpa is Opa.
Who knew there were so many different names for the same role :P

My parents let my niece (their first grandkid) name them, so they are Nana and Papa. My IL chose Grammy and Grampy. DS cannot say Grammy and Grampy, so he calles my Mom, my MIL AND my FIL Nana and he calls my Dad Papa. Grammy and Grampy is hard even for me b/c I am always getting them mixed up. They sound so similar!
I say that they should let the kids decide.
Go Phils!!
my mom is called baba, and my SO's mom is nani . easy pronunciation for DS & LO
My blog: Midwest Chaos
My parents are MoMo and PoPo.
Dh's parents are Grandma and PopPop.
I never put much thought into it because the kids tend to create their own name for them!
My parents
Grandma
Grandpa
My In-laws:
Nana
Papa
My friend and her husband go by Lola and Lolo to there grandkids it is Filipino .
We have Great Grandparents alive and a Great Great Grandmother so...they are:
DH's Side: Grandpa lastname(DH's dad), Grandma Lastname & Grandpa lastname (DH's mom & step-father), Nan & Papa (great grandparents), G.G.G. (Great Grandma Gail...it's a PITA and DS doesn't say it, I don't know why she insists on this name), and Nanny (great great grandma)
My side: Oma (my mom) and unfortunately he has never met my Grandmother.
mine: grandma & grandpa
dh: grammy & poppy
his grandparents: great-grandmom and big poppy
my SO's mom is going to be nana. my mom said she wanted to be called "grandmama" as in grandma-ma with the accent on the last "ma." kind of hard to explain by typing but anywho... I am not making my daughter call her that because its pretty damn stupid in my opinion...she will likely just be "grandma"
I completely agree with this. MIL insisted DD call her Memere (she says it meh-may) before she was even born. I HATE this name, it sounds so pretentious. I do not call her this. I call her Grandma (FN), DD calls her both. My mom is Grandma (FN), which DD decided to start calling her.
My mom will be MawMaw, because that's what my step siblings kids call her. My godmother will be Lala (her name is ANgela) because that's what every kid has called her for as long as I can remember. DH's mom will be Mamaia (Ma- meye- uh) because she is Romanian.
My dad will be Pa, My step dad is already Poppy, and DH's dad will be Tataia.
I called one of my grandmothers Mema (mee maw) and the other Grandma B.
My grandparents are Yaya and Lalo (we're not Greek... just what I called them as a baby, and it stuck), Momma first-name and Papa first-name, and DH's are Oma and Opa, and Grandma & Grandma last-name.
DS calls my mom and stepdad Grandma and Grandpa, my dad and stepmom Nana and Papa, and my MIL Memaw (but says it like mam-maw).
my mom will be Grammy
MIL will be Nana (she is called this by my niece and nephew)
FIL is Pa-pa
My dad will probably grandpa
Really though whatever the baby wants to call them each is fine by us.
An Irish alternative to Mamo is Morai, which is pronounced MO Ree. The only reason I know that is because it's my mom's current 1st choice. I really don't know if it'll stick for us because we're a family of Grammys and Nanas.
Good luck!
// I love you too. //
My mom is Grandma-ma. My stepdad is Grampy.
My MIL is MuuMuu (pronounced MooMoo - it's Finnish) and FIL is Papa.
My grandparents are Memere and Grampa.
I like Mimi the best, but can't b/c of my dog...Gigi is what my ex calls his grandmother...I think b/c her husband was Nono (from Tyrol)?? But I love Gigi...
My grandparents were/are: Nannie (she passed and her maiden name is my son's name...she meant so much to me, so I had to honor her somehow, so chose her maiden name to name my son), Nana, Pop-Pop (x2)--my mom's father died before I was born...there are so many options, but I don't want her stuck with something that's strange! We call my mother Meemaw now (for my dog b/c we are huge dog lovers, so our dog is like our dog-ter--{daughter})
My mom is Amma (icelandic) and my MIL will be Grandma.
Growing up I had Grandma/Grandpa and then Nanny/Papa. My mom swore she would never be a Nanny or a Baba... so she ended up with Amma.
I call my grandparents grammie and grampie last name, and my great grand parents were grammie and grampie last name as well. I also have a not-really-grandmother who we call Nana.
My parents will be grammie and grampie, and FI's parents will be grandma and grandpa. The great grandparents will probably be grandma/grammie and grandpa/grampie last name.
LO will call the Great grandparents Opa and Oma. They are German. My mom and Dad will be Nana and Papa (They requested this) And DH's parents will be grandma and grandpa.
