The cough that never goes away...

So Lily has had this cough for what seems like a month now.  It started out with a runny nose and watery eyes.  I thought she had allergies.  I took her to the pedi and the pedi agreed it was probably allergies and told me to give her children's zyrtec.  I took her back for her 18 month well visit last Monday and mentioned the cough wasn't getting better.  In fact it is getting worse and my kid is starting to sound like a seal.  The pedi could only find that Lily has a sinus infection and ear infection.  So she prescribed us an antibiotic.  Now the cough is getting even worse.  She doesn't sound so much like a seal anymore.  But she can't sleep and the cough sounds very congested.

Is there anything else I can do to help her kick this cough?  Using the humidifier seems to set off a coughing fit.  I hate seeing her so miserable.

Re: The cough that never goes away...

  • First off, if you think the humidifier is making it worse, check it for mold.  If it's all clear, then chances are, it is making it worse, but in a good way.  Like its breaking up all that junk which will make her cough more to clear it out.  Put your ear to her chest/back and listen to hear breathe.  Do you hear any sound when she breathes in/out?  If so, that's wheezing and needs to be addressed pretty quickly.  If not, it's probably drainage related but I would definitely be concerned that its gone on for so long even after antibiotics.  She may need some breathing treatments for a week or so to help her kick it.  I would go back to the doc and demand further explanation if she still says its nothing.

  • Ugh I feel for ya! Bailey has been sick for almost 2 months now. He's been on 2 antibotics and this last one was for 14 days. When he's on the antibotic he gets better for a few days then it comes back. I don't know if it's allergies or what with him but his snotty nose and coughing came back yesterday. And the little one has been sick for a week and half now. He's on antibotics b/c his turned into an ear infection. Poor little man has been coughing so hard the last few days as well. Thankfully we got for his 6 months appt tomorrow. I would probably take her back in and see if she can get a stronger antibotic or something. Oh and both my boys have clear lungs. Their coughing is due to drainage :(

  • If she sounds like a seal, there's a possibility she could have whooping cough. Check it out with your pedi and have them rule it out for sure.

  • You could ask the pedi about breathing treatments if they think it's just drainage. I would have the pedi check again since it's been going on so long. Derek had a cold like that for over a month in January and he didn't get better until after we did a week of breathing treatments.

  • I'm so sorry Julie.  And poor, sweet little Lily.  I would call the pedi again.  It seems like an awful long time for her to be coughing that way, even after the antibiotics.  Sending good vibes for some relief (for all of you).

  • I would call or go back to pedi since the cough is getting worse. This happened to H one time. Started out w cough turned into ear infection. Went on antibiotics & cough got slightly better. Got another cold about 1 week later and cough came back (ears were clear) so pedi did nothing. Cough came back with a vengeance and went back to pedi 1 week later and she had walking pneumonia. Pedi gave us a strong antibiotic and that finally knocked it out. Hope she feels better soon. I know how miserable the cough can be.
