2nd Trimester

Baby names, and the story behind them...

DH and I have kinda always known what we wanted, but hadn't really told the families until this week, and we got pretty good responses from them. We have one for girl, one for boy (hopefuly we'll find out what we're having at the apt this week!), and each has a story behind it. I like hearing how parents came up with their kids' names, so I'll tell mine, then tell me yours :)

Boy: Magnus James

Magnus was DH's choice. His family is from Sweden, and he wanted a name that represented the Scandinavian culture. Looking back in his family tree, there were quite a few fellas named Magnus, so he fell in love with it. The origin is latin, but the Scandinavians adopted it. James is DH's dad's middle name (DH is a jr. so it's his mn too), and I wanted to keep some kind of normalcy in there (plus, James is a Saint, which is important to me).

Girl: Genevieve Clarice

Genevieve was my Granny's name. My sister and I always said that whoever had a girl first got to name her Genevieve. When my Granny passed away my sister and I had to manage her belongings, and I found a wicker picnic basket with a baby blanket and a handwritten note from Granny that said, "For the next Genevieve, Love you a bushel and a peck!"....Clarice is DH's Grandma's name. He's especially close to her, and wanted to pass her name on as well. I think they sound nice together, AND both names are Saints :)

so...how did you come up with your name/s?

  • I just want to say OMG I love your Grandma!  How wonderful!

We are 18 wks and have no name, my DH mistakenly told his family our names and they scoured and found something wrong with our boy name and our girl name.  Now we cannot agree on anything else.  So this baby is nameless.  Good job on your names.

  • Ds #1's name is: Leonidas Xavier

Dh is half Greek and half Persian and it was important for him to have our kids have at least one of those ethnic names.   It was also very important to us that our children have names that are different, but not too out there.

We couldn't agree on boys names at all when I was pg.  We had a million girls names but no boys.  One night we were watching the movie "300" and the main characters name is Leonidas.  Dh fell in love with the name but I wasn't so sure.  The more I thought about it, the more I liked it.  Being as Leonidas is Greek, that would 'satisfy' his Greek family.  Shortened, Leo could be pronounced by my family easily, and most of all, Leo worked well as both a child and adult name.  I told dh if he was sure about that name, then I was OK with it too but since I loved the name Xavier, I wanted that as a middle name.  He agreed on it.

Ds #2's name will be (we think...we're about 99% sure): Ajax Cyrus

Again, we were going back and forth about boy names and couldn't find something that we liked.  We felt that we had aimed too high with our first sons name and that nothing else could match it.  A couple weeks ago I was looking through names and I found the name Ajax, which is Greek and I loved it!  I thought it was just so bold and strong and Jax, as a nick name is totally cute imo.  Cyrus is a Persian name and one of dh's fave names.  I wasn't crazy about it being used as a first name, so we have agreed to it as a middle name.

  • The story about your grandma is beautiful!! :))

Our baby girl will be Carmen Loretta!

Carmen--I was riding in the car with my niece (who was 8 or 9 at the time--now 10) and we were just talking about names we liked if I were to ever get pregnant.  She suggested the name Carmen and at the time I really thought it was cute and said "I'll hang on to that idea!"  Well, here we are a few years later and I still love it!  So now she is soo proud that she picked Carmen's name!

Loretta--My husband's grandma's name along with my "adoptive grandma" who is actually my best friend's grandmother (that I claim as my own b/c one of my grandmother's passed away when I was 3 and the other had alzhiemer's and I never got to really know her or be close to her) are both Loretta.  We love both Loretta's sooo much and really wanted to pass on the name.  My husband's grandma is a recent breast cancer survivor and such a strong woman and we want our child to live her life as vibrantly as she does!

  • DS#1 - Jack Donald

I've ALWAYS loved the name "Jack".  I'd go to babyshowers with my Mom and I'd always tell her that if I had a boy, I would name him that.  She'd just laugh.  TA DA!  hehehe!  "Donald" is DH's Dads name.

    DS#2 - Benjamin Oscar

DH picked out "Benjamin" and I loved the idea because we call him "Ben" for short. AND you can still say the name in spanish too!  I am from Costa Rica.  "Oscar" is my Dad's name.  We made a point that if we had two boys, we'd give them the Grandfather's names as their middle names.

Child#3 - We haven't found out what we're having yet. May 2nd is he day!  We have a boy's name: Charles Henry.  We'll call him "Charlie" so it's not so formal.  If it's a girl, we're liking "Isabel" right now. But it changes every week. Girls names are just to hard to pick out!  I'm almost hoping it's a boy! LOL!

  • DD is Meris Anne.

Meris is Latin for "of the sea" and DH and I both love the ocean. Anne depends on who you ask. If you ask me, it comes from my mom's name, Joanne. If you ask DH, he'll say it's from Blackbeard's boat, Queen Anne's Revenge (he's a huge pirate nut).

One night we were throwing out some names and the only one she kicked at was Meris Anne, so we like to say she chose her name.

We haven't even discussed names for this one yet.

  • This is our first and if its a boy we are still deciding between 2 either MacGregor James Gordon or Fraser James Gordon..... MacGregor is MIL maiden name.... we thought it would be cute at a first name and has lots of ways to shorten it... Mac, Greg, Gregor... and Fraser we just liked.... It's a Scottish name and that was important to FIL. If it's a girl we are probably going with Katherine Marie, Katherine just because I love the flexibility of it, Kate, Kati, Kathy....and Marie because it is my mom's middle name.... Still a little unsure but have pretty strong ideas!
  • Aw, the story about your Grandma is so sweet. :)

  • DS#1 is Eldin Brewer

My DH picked Eldin thinking he made it up, when I started telling my family about it I found out my great great grandfather was named Eldon. Brewer was my great grandfathers middle name and he was the sweetest man I'd ever known.

    DS#2 is undecided

I like the name Edison because it means son of Edward which is DH's mn. We like Trad possibly for a middle name because it was my DH's deceased uncle. No matter what we end up choosing I want it to have strong familial ties.

Ugh.  People suck.  This is why we're not telling.  Sorry this happened to you!

  • Your grandma was so sweet!

My girl name was Eva Mae, but I won't get to use it unless the next baby is a girl. When I volunteered at a hospice house, I sat with a woman I absolutely adored. I was with her for two years and she was one of the most flat out amazing people I had ever met in my entire life. I was close to her that my own mother started getting just a little jealous. Her sister's name was Eva and her middle name was Mae. If I had a little girl, I'd want her to be as independent, smart, funny and brave as this lady was. When I worked there later, I know THREE more middle-named-Maes (apparently that was THE middle name around 1925), one whom has also really special to me but the opposite of the first woman in many ways. So everywhere I look in my memory banks, there's a happy memory of an incredible woman with the middle name Mae.

But now I need to think of a boy name and I'm getting a little nervous. I have no idea. My DH's first name is my father's middle name. I was thinking of naming the baby after my father (first and middle, then saying that the middle name was after my DH Big Smile), but the first middle names (and the last name) are REALLY common and kind of bland. I wish there was just a bit of flavor in there somewhere, but my DH and my father are the greatest people I've ever known and I'd be thrilled if my child was anything like them.

  • for this baby if this is a girl she will be named Arabella Reine- Arabella because I have an aunt who has always called me Bella and I love the sound of it but im not into the twilight thing and also i wanted her to have a name that could grow with her. Reine is french for queen and i love royal names plus i think they flow together really well with our last name

If this is a boy his name will be Laythan Xavier- Laythan is just a name we heard once and both liked it (almost never happens) and Xavier is a name DH loves and wanted as a first name but I vetoed it he is so in love with it tho that i let him have it as a mioddle name

  • This is great!!

Our little guy is going to be named Charles Henry (we'll call him Charlie). Charles was DH's grandfathers name. We were both very close to him and he passed away in November.  Although we were not TTC, we actually conceived LO the night of Pap's funeral.  Henry is my father's first name.

If we were having a girl we were going to name her Charlie Sophia.

  • Our daughter's name is Calandra Kay.

We couldn't decide on a boy or girl name, so we finally said that if it was a girl, I would name her, and if it was a boy, he would. Then the other person would pick the middle name. At first, my DH really hated the name, but when I suggested we use his late grandma's name as a middle name, he loved it together. He also had a lot of problems with identity theft because he has a pretty common name, and a guy with the same name/birthday/almost the same SSN had really bad credit, etc. so he thought that Calandra was a good choice because not a lot of people would have that name, haha.

I picked Calandra because I wanted a Greek name, and it means singing bird. Plus, our last name is pretty common, so it evens it out.

  • DD #1 ELISAbeth Grace, my grandmother in law's middle name was Elizabeth, and a close friend of mine who I shared a birthday died tragically the week we turned 20, her name was Lisa so we combined them. Grace.... .as in God give me some Grace.

DD#2 Lillyann Hope, my grandmother in laws favorite flower was a lilly, and another friend who died in a horrible accidents middle name was Hope.

If we have DD#3 It will be Isabella Faith....one night while ttc I watched a movie with Isabella Rossilini in it and thought to myself how beautiful I always thought she was. Later that night I dreamed I have another girl. I woke up and thought "wow Isabella would be a beautiful name," and went back to sleep. The next day I told my husband I thought we were going to have another girl and he said "what the Isabella thing?" I was shocked because I didn't say a word to him about any of it the night before. Now my mom is giving me crap because she thinks it has to do with twillight. It so does not. And  Faith.....My hubby keeps thinking it's one of the other girls middle names and we are Born Again Christians.

If we have a boy we are stuck on Daniel Christopher, it is the two boys names we chose for the twins and DH is upset I won't name the baby after him. We have 4 Michaels ( well 3 and a Michelle) in a row in my family, and 3 Francis', 3 John's, 4 Tim's and 2 Raymond's in his family. Enough is enough right????!!!!!!!

  • Interesting stories!! Thank you guys for sharing Big Smile

  • I've always loved the name Penelope.  DH metioned the other day that if we have a girl we could name her June in honor of his dad who recently passed - he went by Jun because he was a Junior.  So Penelope June sounded like a perfect girl name!  As for a boy name, I'm sold on Severino - DH's dad's name.  It's somewhat unusual, but honors my husband's family and Filipino heritage.  Not sure what the middle name would be though.
