Create a second registry to please others?

DH and I created our registry through Amazon since they literally have everything. If people wanted to buy stuff for us, they wouldn't *have* to purchase through Amazon, but rather look at our registry and go to a brick and mortar store if they wish.

Last night MIL called and she is planning a shower and wants us to create a registry to BRU or Target because "older" people may not know how to shop online. I feel pressured to just create a registry to please her/her friends and family.

To me, if they want to go to Target and BRU to buy clothes that's cool since we didn't register for clothes (and we NEED them) since we figure people will pick out what they want anyway.  I honestly can't stand BRU and Target doesn't have a ton of stuff we want. Is it unreasonable for me to stick to my guns and just tell her we registered at Amazon and "that's that?". What would you do?

  • I'm registering at a few different places. Most of which only have the items available online so you can't really win. I wouldn't do it if you don't want to.

  • Just make the registry. She's right that there are probably a lot of people who wouldn't know how to look up an Amazon registry, even if they only used it as a reference guide in the stores. And a registry is supposed to be for the convenience of your guests.

I don't really see how having an Amazon registry to work off of would help them find a present for you in a store anyways, if you say that Target doesn't have the things you want...

  • Register for the same things at Babies R Us.  You can do it online and then they can find it in the store.  If you get doubles, you can return them for stuff you didn't get.  I like having everything in one place, but she's probably right that older people will not know how to use the internet and you may end up with the hassle of having a lot more items you DON'T want than you would if you doubled up.  It's annoying, but in the end it might just make it easier for the guests and for yourself.

  • We had this same issue.  We found everything we wanted on Amazon and then realized that a lot of people won't look in time, or may just go to BRU/Target to get stuff that we didn't register for.  It may be easier to create another registry so you end up getting the stuff you really want, instead of what some may just settle for.

  • personally, i think your mil is right.  i would never register to an on-line store only because i know that my older relatives would not know what to do.

I'd stick with one registry. It's like getting married all over again with the registries. If they can't figure out how to use the one you've registered at, then that's their issue. People know what babies need and what new parents need, it's not that hard. I'd stick to my guns, and then make DH tell her "No, we've registered at BRU/Target/Amazon, it's time consuming to put it all together and we're not going to register anywhere else. If people buy us items that are off-list, we can always update our Amazon list to reflect the similiar item that was purchased."

  • Personally, I would register at a store that people can physically go to as well. Some people are extremely uncomfortable with shopping online.
  • I would register somewhere people can physically go. We only registered at Target. They have a lot more online only items than in store, but where possible I registered for something that is available in store so my guests don't have to go online to buy stuff.

  • I am doing most of my registry on Amazon, and doing things like burp cloths/bottles/little things at BRU. Everything is so much more expensive at BRU, and other than my legally blind grandmother (who won't be going to BRU anyway), everyone I know is familiar with Amazon.

  • I did the same thing as you.  I only registered on Amazon but debating the same thing.  The only people I can imagine who really don't know anything about online shopping are my great aunts...and let's be honest, none of them will be driving down to BRU anyway!

I'll tell my sisters & mom that if anyone balks at my registry, to tell them I could always use baby clothes.  Then they'll probably just complain that I'm Team Green.  No winning with the old bats! (teasing, obviously) Wink

  • I must agree with majority of the PP's...I think althou you may not like anything at these places you have to make it a bit more convenient for your guest who are going out of their way to shower you both and your LO with a bit of love through a purchase/gift...

I am sure there is somethng you can register for that you are going to need, bottles, burp clothes, diapers, monitor, wipes, bed sheets...I mean something... not everyone is computer savvy nor do they trust online sites where they have to provide their ccard info...I think I have to side with your MIL on this one...GL!
