I was planning on getting this mattress which I read great reviews for (not just on target but other sites as well): https://www.target.com/gp/detail.html?asin=B0039LIPFO&colid=39QVALAYG5SOY&coliid=I2WVY0O4077YLI&bckreg=baby
However, a friend said I have to go with an organic mattress which is about $300.
I was just thinking that you put the mattress pads over them anyway so do you really need to get the organic mattress?
Thoughts?
Re: Crib Mattress Question...
I think you're fine to go without an organic mattress - especially if the one you *have* to get is $300. That's just a bit ridiculous, IMO!
I've seen the mattress you posted and it's gotten pretty good reviews. I would go with that one.
It's up to you. You don't HAVE to have an organic mattress. I decided to just get a regular coil mattress. If you do decide you want organic, do some research- there are lots of them that are in the same price range at the mattress you like. Good luck!
Edit: This is the one we got: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0017S2S86
In my opinion yes. If you are going to commit to going organic, it is counter-productive to put an organic mattress pad over a non-organic mattress and vice versa. The mattress (or mattress pad) will still outgas the gasses you are trying to avoid. So if you want to go organic, an organic pad over a regular mattress won't do it and a regular mattress pad over an organic mattress won't do it.
That said you don't NEED an organic mattress. It's a personal preference. Personally we went with an organic mattress - our kid is going to be spending the majority of his time on it and I'd rather not have him breathing in all the chemicals.
Edit - just realized I misread your question so I edited my answer
I think organic versus non-organic is a matter of preference. From what I've read, the most dangerous part of the mattress (organic or not) is the flame retardant chemicals that have to be applied to them. All mattresses have to have some type of flame retardant (organic or not). I was just careful to choose one that had one of the safer chemicals.
We buy a lot of organic produce, dairy and meat but are not buying organic linens and such as we don't see the point. But that's just us. As I said, it's a matter of preference.
