If your child does/did a "rest time" instead of nap....

If you do a rest time instead of nap with your child, what age do you think that lasts through.  My son dropped his naps at age 4 and we do rest time instead now (he's 4.5).  He doesn't mind it and it benefits both of us.  I'm just curious what age people typically do that through?

  • I plan to do it until Kindergarten starts with my oldest for 2 reasons - one is that her PreK program has a 2 hour nap/rest time every day until the summer part of the program when they slowly start to drop it to get the kids ready for kindergarten where there is no nap if you are in the full day program.  Also, my younger DD still naps so we are typically home.  Granted, there are times when my DD misses this time period and she does fine so I don't make it a steadfast rule but if we are home, she has 1 hour of quiet time.  I have a feeling it will be different on the weekends with my younger DD as once she is ready to give up naps, we won't feel the need as much to plan around this quiet time since both girls will not be napping then and we will just play it based on how she is behaving that day but school wise, she will have this quiet time until just before kindergarten.  My oldest will be 6 when she starts kindy and my little one will be 5 1/2.

We have rest/movie time here where they can play quietly or watch a movie.  If I skip it (like we're out) they go a bit mad at the end of the day.  I'll keep it up until they stop needing it, basically.  I don't make them hang out alone or anything so it's not a huge deal either way.

DS (4.5) stopped napping at 2 and my 2.5 year old  doesn't nap very often anymore either.

  • We still do it on the weekends because his preschool does it. He doesn't really nap unless he had a big day (i.e., we had a busy morning at the zoo) or he's not feeling well.

  • DD dropped her naps completely by 2.5 (it was off an on from the time she was about 22 months).

She gave up quiet time at 4.5.  It was sort of a mutual decision.  She was allowed to listen to CD's and stuff during quiet time and by 4.5 (her little brother was 5 months old) she was starting to bug him while he was napping.

She plays independently frequently, though so I didn't really *need* it for me any more.
