i dont have a UO today.

Kelso- back home older drivers have to take a test every year or every couple years and growing up in a retirement community you have older drivers ALL OVER the place.  but funny story when i was in school we had to do a community placement for home health care and one client we saw twice a week well one day she did her shower routine, and the other day we got to go grocery shopping okay thats fine EXCEPT she drove(she did fine and was very safe) i however in the backseat held on to the oh sh*t handle for dear life.

Leashes... mmmm we used the hand cuff ones for my brother when he learned to walk, it gave him the freedom to walk farther way from us in some situations (it wasnt used all the time) and doesnt look like you are walking your child but there is the cutest monkey one. meh i wont say i wont use one cuz well i just might one day.

Haha! I love the "oh sh!t handle"

Oh for the love of Pete, not this again!! Tongue Tied lol

Didn't realize this was a hot topic.  I don't participate in every UO or every thread.  Don't want to stir any feathers or get any panties in a bunch.  Just thought I'd share my feelings.

What's your big beef with leashes anyway?

NBD to me either way. I don't know why people care one way or another.

I think this sounds like discrimination.  I stand by my opinion that some older folks are very capable of driving, and some younger folks should be tested!

How is that discrimination? At least they can still drive. I think having older drivers tested every year is a great idea. It shows who's really capable of being on the road and who's not.

  • I am not sure what uo means- but my parents are 80 and my dad is a great driver.  In fact just the other week we went out for dinner and i had a glass of wine so I had my dad drive us home,

My pet peeve is all the safety rules about babies stuff.  I get the point about car seats but some of the bans are a little ridiculous...  we all survived.  I am less concerned about LO safety in a walker than I am about DH leaving power tools around the house.  No ban on DH's or power tools!

You might feel different if it was the only way to safely and happily take your special needs child out in a crowd.

Due to DS's sensory issues he flipped out whenever we were in a crowd and it got loud. He would bolt, usually toward the road since the road isn't crowded & he loves vehicles. Also due to his sensory issues he can't distinguish one voice from another when there is a lot of noise and can't hear me yelling "Stop!"

Because of this I strapped a monkey backpack on him (with the end around my wrist) every afternoon for months and walked around our neighborhood. He had to hold my hand, but if he twisted out of my grasp and ran he was still attached to me and could only go 2-3 feet away. We practiced walking and practiced staying with me instead of running when upset and practiced telling me when he was upset, when it was too loud, when he felt bad (overstimulated).

By the time he was 3 I felt it was safe to bring him out without it, even to Disney World, despite his special needs.  If it wasn't for that monkey backpack I would have had him strapped screaming in a stroller until he was much older, which doesn't teach a thing except to hate going anywhere.

You can't tell by looking at my son that he has sensory problems, and you don't know the situation of anyone else that you see using a harness. So you just keep being a judgmental ass and I'll keep my son happy and safe.

my friends mom was hit on her harley and killed on her way to sturgis. it was by an 89 year old woman who didn't even know she had hit anything let alone someone on a bike. i don't think their freedom should necessarily be taken away but there needs to be some mandated testing or something for their reaction times and sight. -- my SIL was also rear ended by a 70 something year old pulling into her driveway...

Well that's very true in most cases.. Healthy and alert or not, I think it's smart to have older people take driving tests yearly. Once a year really isn't that bad.

Also, years ago my DH's aunt and uncle would put their DD when she was little on a leash and tie her to the tree outside so they could do yard work and she would sit there and cry.

  • I agree to a certain extent.

In IL after someone reaches a certain ages (I think 80) they have to take the test before they can renew their license.  I think they have to renew their license every 2 years.  So they would be taking the test every two years.  Personally I think they should make the test every year (so much can happen in a year).

    Yes

I've seen a lot more reckless behavior from people under the age of 20 than over the age of 70.  Inexperience coupled with a feeling of being invincible is a pretty dangerous combination on the road.

You do realize that many babies didn't survive, hence the laws.  Also, there are probably twice as many cars on the roads as there were when we were little, and speed limits have increased substantially.  And walkers aren't banned, at least not in the US.

  • imagePrimReaper:
I think the cops need to post someone outside the high school behind my house.  The speed limit is 30km....(maybe 15mph) and NONE of the students abide by that.  Why does everyone else have to slow down for their safety when they won't?

Call the police station and tell them that the kids are driving recklessly in your neighborhood. They'll send a cop out to watch the street for a few days. That should help.

Yeah, cause people choose to mess up while driving and cause a scary situation.  Because they choose to have their licenses revoked instead of giving them up willingly.  I know a few people who have given their licenses up willingly when they knew it was time, and those people aren't lazy and they're not purposefully forgetful.  They would love to still drive.  Your calling it laziness and forgetfulness is ignorant.

I'm a fan of "never say never" for this one.  I don't think that I would ever use one, but I also never planned on using a stroller or bedsharing.  Yeah, I do both.

Why no stroller or bedsharing?  I ask because normally babywearing and bead sharing somewhat go hand in hand, not that they have to.  Also, why anti-stroller?

I agree with the never say never on this one.  Kids are strong and can easily get away from their parents.  Kids don't understand the consequences beyond the immediate ones from their parents, so sometimes the "benefit" of getting away from the parent will out weigh the "risk" of being repremanded for it.

We plan on doing this with DS this year.  He'll be more mobile than he was last year and we don't want him to run into the road or get hurt on the lawn mower..  We don't need sunblock for him either because the tree provides enough shade during most hours of the day.

I know plenty of people 70+ who don't have the luxury of retirement and are forced to work well into their 70's and 80's just to afford to live. Requiring a state issued driving test every year or two years is very different from saying anyone over 70 shouldn't drive period. Living/working in Metro area DC I've been in plenty of car accidents and I've been rear ended at least 4 times by "capable" young bodied commuters who were on their way to work...not the country kitchen cafe.

That's like saying no women should be able to drive period.

I'm sure statistically more young/teen drivers cause accidents than old drivers because of inexperience.

Yeah... I agreed with yourface about making an annual driving test instead of taking away driving privileges.

Do you think everyone should take an annual driving test? Or just people over 70??

I guess everyone could since people would most likely make it a big deal that only older people are. As long as the older people are taking it I wouldn't mind it being for everyone. My main point for the annual test is to show if they really are capable of being on the road without killing someone or themselves...

  • I have to agree with Kelso to an extent, simply because a very very very old man backed into me and LO the other day in the pediatricians parking lot.  Thankfully he was only going like 5 miles per hour, and hit my side.  But he didn't stop.  EVEN THOUGH I WAS LAYING ON THE HORN....

Anywho, my suggestion would be an abbreviated driving test every renewal.  I guess renewal time varies by state, but here its like 5 years.  Everyone, regardless of age.  And yes, I'm willing to admit that I may not pass...especially if paralel (thats spelled so wrong...)  parking is involved.

  • I think EVERYONE should be required to take a driving test every few years.  I truly think that a lot of people forget some of the laws, like who has the right-of-way in various situations.  And yeah, there are some older people who shouldn't drive - but there are some who are just fine and younger people can be the same.

As for the leash debate - I think anyone opposed has never been the parent of a spirited child.   Some children are just a lot more active than others and leashes are generally used to keep them SAFE.  I'd rather see an alive, safe child than one that is hurt because he has ran out into the street.
