I don't know how to determine how many months pregnant I am. Whenever someone asks me "how far along are you?" I reply in weeks and they say "well how many months is that?"
My first guess was to just go from CD1 of my BFP cycle, which was December 13th... so that makes me 3 months and 11 days. But then, 9 months past December 13th would mean I was due on September 13th and I'm due the 19th, so that's not right. You can't divide the # of weeks by 4 either, because most months have 30/31 days. Ugh. I'm such a math teacher/accountant... can someone give me a formula?

Re: Dumb Question: Months vs. Weeks
I usually take the weeks and divide it by four.. 15 weeks, almost 4 months. etc..but thats me.
ETA: though you said we cant do it..I do!
Ha! Quite the conundrum for us accountants. I guess I'll just divide by 4 or 5 even though like you said, that's not really right. They just want a ballpark idea anyway. Us pregnant mamas and doctors/nurses are the only ones who think in terms of weeks pregnant.
They laughed at me at work one time because I said how many weeks and days pregnant I was.

Oh I didn't mean YOU can't... lol... I just meant I can't because I am OCD with numbers.
Ugh, this is why I so wish that the general public just talked about pregnancy in weeks... so much easier!
I am due September 1, so I just go with the month of the year. To the random non-pregnant person, due date = 9 months along. September is the 9th month, so whatever month I'm in, I'm that many months. I.E., right now, I would say "almost four months." April 1, I would say "four months." Doesn't make perfect sense, but it's pretty close I suppose!
BTW, I'm an accountant too, and this annoys the piss out of me.
This bugs me too, I never remember.
Here's what I found:
1st Tri: Month 1 = Weeks 1-4, Month 2 = Weeks 5-8, Month 3 = Weeks 9-13
2nd Tri: Month 4 = Weeks 14-17, Month 5 = Weeks 18-21, Month 6 = Weeks 22-26
3rd Tri: Month 7 = Weeks 27-30, Month 8 = Weeks 31-35, Month 9 = Weeks 36-40
Basically most months are 4 weeks, but the last month in each trimester is 5 weeks. Hope that helps
I have the same problem. Yay for accountants! However, I found that if someone isn't familiar with the weeks in a pg, then they're not going to be doing the math when you tell them the months either. I figure they're just looking for a rough idea that they can relate to since all they know is 9 months. So you can either take your weeks and divide by 4, then round. Or count the number of calendar months left and subtract from 9.
ie, I'm 15 weeks tomorrow, so I'd just say 15/4 = 3.75, so 3.5 months
or, I'm due in Sept, which is 6 months away, so 9-6 = 3 months
I like this thinking.
And yes, I realize people who ask really don't care to know specificially, but I do, because I'm weird.
Awesome! Thanks.
I guess if you want to even out the months you could do 365/12 and say that each month is 30.42 days long...of course not counting leap year...
then you could take 280 days/30.42 and you could say that you will be pregnant for 9.2 months (assuming a 40 week pregnancy)
This is what I did for my numbers:
I am 16 weeks 2 days pregnant = 16.2857 weeks pregnant or 114 days pregnant.
280-114 = 166 days left (based on 40 week pregnancy)
166/30.42 = 5.457 months left
9.2 months - 5.457 months = 3.74 months pregnant...
EDT: I just looked at the chart someone posted, after I ran through my math. AWESOME! I always love it when the numbers match!
*dweeb moment now over*
This is what the mayo clinic pregnancy book says as well. And, NatKay-this was not a dumb question. I was wondering the same thing myself last night, and DH said it is because you are in your 4th month. Otherwise the first 4 weeks would have been negative months.
I hate the whole weeks v months thing too! And I'm a lawyer - we don't do math!
When people ask how far along I am, I usually just say that I'm due in early September, and that satisfies them. I feel like people don't really care, they're more curious when you're actually going to have the baby, anyway. If they really feel like they want to know how many months I am, then I just divide by 4. Tomorrow I'll be 16 weeks, so for the next couple of weeks, I'll say that I'm "about 4 months."
I divide my weeks by 4.44.
40 weeks divided by 9 months = 4.44
So I am 13 weeks. 13 divided by 4.44 puts me JUST under 3 months pregnant!
