Re: POLL: The name game ...

  • 1. Your child's first and middle name? Collin Jackson
    2. Why did you choose those names? Any special meaning, etc.? We just liked the way Collin sounded and the alliteration with our last name (DH has the same initials) and Jackson is my maiden name.
    3. Who first suggested LO's name? I suggested Collin, and DH immediately said, "like the former Cougar?" (football player). Sure, why not!? He was hot!
    4. What other names were in contention? During my first pregnancy, our boy name was Jackson, but it got super popular and also my ILs informed us that they would be calling him Jack, which I do not like. (I don't mind it as a seperate name, but if I name my kid Jackson, I expect him to be called Jackson.)
    5. What would LO have been named if they were the other sex? Brynn.
    6. Would you use that name now if you had a girl/boy next? No; we actually have managed to find another girl name that we agree on.
    7. Did you run into any opposition over LO's name? My MIL said repeatedly that she was worried that he would be called "Colon." I was like um, the extra L should negate that.
    8. What is a naming trend that annoys you? Using the same middle name for every child. I know of a family with four girls whose middle name is Anne.
BONUS: If you could have a slice of pie right now, what flavor would you want? Strawberry rhubarb.

  • 1. Your child's first and middle name? Laurel Elizabeth
    2. Why did you choose those names? Any special meaning, etc.? Loved the way her FN sounded, it was traditional but uncommon.  Her MN is my mom's MN.
    3. Who first suggested LO's name? Me.
    4. What other names were in contention? We settled on Laurel pretty early on.
    5. What would LO have been named if they were the other sex? Lane
    6. Would you use that name now if you had a girl/boy next? IDK if I like having the two L names, but we'll see.  And I bet there are people who live on a Laurel Lane, so that would be weird.
    7. Did you run into any opposition over LO's name? No one vocalized any complaints, thank goodness.
    8. What is a naming trend that annoys you? Ummmmm I wouldn't want to say because I'm sure there are people on here who have used it!  The worst name that I've seen lately was Adisyn Taelor - too many "unusual" letter combos.
BONUS: If you could have a slice of pie right now, what flavor would you want? Sam made a killer butterscotch creme pie last TDay that was DELISH.

    1. Your child's first and middle name? Maxwell Joseph
    2. Why did you choose those names? Any special meaning, etc.? I choose Max because Where the Wild Things are was my favorite book as a child, and Max + our last name is pretty much the coolest boy's name ever. ;) We landed on Mawell because DH didn't want him to just be Max. Joseph is after DH's dad, grandfather, my grandmother (Josephine), and my brother.
    3. Who first suggested LO's name? Me
    4. What other names were in contention? None for boys.
    5. What would LO have been named if they were the other sex? If he was a girl, his name would have been Sophie.
    6. Would you use that name now if you had a girl/boy next? Nope. Too many Sophies. Although, I do still love that name.
    7. Did you run into any opposition over LO's name? Only one insignificant person, but I put her in her place! ;)
    8. What is a naming trend that annoys you? I am not a fan of changing the spelling of ly names to leigh. I love the name Leigh, but I don't like Ashleigh or Kimberleigh.
BONUS: If you could have a slice of pie right now, what flavor would you want? Chocolate or Banana Cream Pie from Marie Calendars.

  • 1. Your child's first and middle name? Madeline Rey
    2. Why did you choose those names? Any special meaning, etc.? Her first name was just a name TJ suggested. I loved it so when we found out she was a girl it stuck. Her middle name is also my middle name, my mom's oldest sister's middle name and my late Grandpa's middle name.
    3. Who first suggested LO's name? TJ.
    4. What other names were in contention? I love the name Evelyn (nn Evie), and if I were to talk TJ into having another kid and it was a girl my heart is set on that name. There weren't a lot of girl names we both LOVED though, quite a few we liked but nothing that stood out like Madeline did.
    5. What would LO have been named if they were the other sex? Porter James.
    6. Would you use that name now if you had a girl/boy next? Yep. TJ's parents were very young when he was born and for some reason gave TJ his moms maiden name as his last name, Porter is FIL's last name and we felt it would be a great way to honor his family.
    7. Did you run into any opposition over LO's name? Just over spelling. TJ and I decided we liked it spelt Madeline and we heard from everyone that she'll be called Mad-a-line and we should have spelt it Madelyn. We went with what we wanted though.
    8. What is a naming trend that annoys you? I know it's not as popular, but Nevaeh still annoys me.
BONUS: If you could have a slice of pie right now, what flavor would you want? Turtle Pie! Mmmmmm, pie. . .

  • 1. Your child's first and middle name? Lucia Anne
    2. Why did you choose those names? Any special meaning, etc.? I wanted her name to be a little Italian since our last name is German.  Also, my 2 favorite movies are A Room with a View (Lucy is the main character) and Anne of Green Gables.  Bonus, Anne is the middle name of the aunt I'm closest to.
    3. Who first suggested LO's name? Me
    4. What other names were in contention? Well, we really loved Sophia Adeline, but Sophia was just too popular for us.
    5. What would LO have been named if they were the other sex? We couldn't decide when I was pregnant before.  But, the top contenders were Samuel, Charlie, Andrew.
    6. Would you use that name now if you had a girl/boy next? We'll probably use one of those boy names.  But not Sophia.
    7. Did you run into any opposition over LO's name? Nope, and even if we had I wouldn't have cared.
    8. What is a naming trend that annoys you? I'm not fond if made up names.  We ran into a cashier at Target this weekend named Brogan.  She was a girl too.  Even DH made a comment about how unfortunate that was.
BONUS: If you could have a slice of pie right now, what flavor would you want? I'd have to go with Lemon Meringue and a nice cup of tea.

  • 1. Your child's first and middle name? Grady Harper
    2. Why did you choose those names? Any special meaning, etc.? Yes, if girl was probably going to be Harper Jude (Harper after a dear deceased friend, Jude for our mothers, both Judith). We could NOT agree on a boy name to save our lives (and he was not warming up to Jude Harper - said it sounded like "jew's harp" LOL). Baby did not have a name for about 12 hours. So stressful. When H went home to feed the dog that first night, I filled out the forms and told him I named the baby when he was away. Of course, I used HIS choice so I knew he wouldn't be mad. It just "fit".
    3. Who first suggested LO's name? Hubby. I told him I wanted Irish, good meaning, not too popular, and phonetic flow with last name. He came up with Grady and it took me a while to warm to it. Now I love it of course!
    4. What other names were in contention? Sex was a surprise so...Jude, Jakob, Andrew, Grady, Henry, Stella, Harper, Ramona, Lane ..so many.
    5. What would LO have been named if they were the other sex? Any of the above girl names - we needed to see baby first before committing!
    6. Would you use that name now if you had a girl/boy next? Not in the plan, but still love Stella, despite the meaning here! :)
    7. Did you run into any opposition over LO's name? We did when it was "an idea" before he was born, now everyone loves it (or so they say)
    8. What is a naming trend that annoys you? U-neek spellings, or names that are trendy but have no personal meaning to the family
BONUS: If you could have a slice of pie right now, what flavor would you want? Ditto on Strawberry Rhubarb!
  • 1. Your child's first and middle name? Nathan Robert

    2. Why did you choose those names? Any special meaning, etc.? Nathan is tradititional wiout being too popular. Robert is my dad and DH's late dad's name.
    3. Who first suggested LO's name? Me. We were going through the alphabet and got to N. I was sold.  Sadly, I kept going and let DH get to the Ws thus casuing much unnecessary arguments during my pregnancy.

    4. What other names were in contention? DH thought there was, but he was mistaken.  Ray was a legitiamte potential middle name (it's mine and my sister's)

    5. What would LO have been named if they were the other sex? Lydia

    6. Would you use that name now if you had a girl/boy next? yes, but no more babies for me!

    7. Did you run into any opposition over LO's name? DH was insistent on Will.  I vetoed and he kept on insisting I consider it.  Dude, when you rejected Andrew becasue your 4th grade buddy's brother Andrew was an ahole, I get similar veto power.

    8. What is a naming trend that annoys you? random Ys, place names, pop culture charachters

BONUS: If you could have a slice of pie right now, what flavor would you want? No pie for me!  I need to WIN at WW.

My funny bonus: DH?s aunt suggested a family name I don?t like as a middle name when my family?s middle name was in the running).

    Me: ?I don?t like it.?

Aunt: ?He needs to have a name from our side of the family!?

    Me: ?Like his last name??

    She STFU after that.

  • 1. Your child's first and middle name? Isaac Matthew

    2. Why did you choose those names? Any special meaning, etc.? I wanted a somewhat unique name, DH wanted traditional.  We probably went through hundreds before we found TWO we agreed on... and I wasn't thrilled with the other one.  Isaac means "one who laughs" and Matthew is DH's middle name.

    3. Who first suggested LO's name? I don't remember!

    4. What other names were in contention? .We could only agree on Connor.  I haven't given up hope on my long list of contender names though.

    5. What would LO have been named if they were the other sex? Either Evelyn or Paige.

    6. Would you use that name now if you had a girl/boy next? I've fallen out of love with Paige, and now in my little circle Evie, Evelyn, Eva, etc. have gotten so popular, not to mention a host of other E names... so I'm not sure on that either.

    7. Did you run into any opposition over LO's name? We chose not to involve anyone in the discussion for that reason.  A couple friends got really annoyed over that, because they kept wanted to tell us their (very negative) opinions about a bunch of different names, and I had to get quite strong in reminding them we didn't want their input!

    8. What is a naming trend that annoys you? Actually... UO time... the "back to basics" trend really annoys me.  Use a traditional name if you like, but people get so snooty about what is a "real" name.  I'm sorry, but every traditional name is ALSO a made up name.  Is there a set time limit in history where someone decided that no one can make up a name anymore?  When?  2000 years ago, 50 years ago, 10?  Isn't it rather arbitrary?  I also HATE the idea of the name board.  I just don't understand naming your child based on the least common denominator, and I understand even less adults who think it is okay to make fun of children's names.  It's easy to see where future bullies come from.

BONUS: If you could have a slice of pie right now, what flavor would you want? Strawberry Rhubarb or Blackberry.

  • 1. Your child's first and middle name? Jackson Gabriel Yee
    2. Why did you choose those names? Love the first name always have, middle name is FIL's name AND MIL's Maiden name
    3. Who first suggested LO's name? Me
    4. What other names were in contention? None
    5. What would LO have been named if they were the other sex? Ke'ala
    6. Would you use that name now if you had a girl/boy next? Nope, her name will be Malia.
    7. Did you run into any opposition over LO's name? Nope, once he I said it outloud and said he sounded like an NBA player, DH was SOLD!
    8. What is a naming trend that annoys you? When people take a simple name and try to make it unique by spelling it "different".
BONUS: If you could have a slice of pie right now, what flavor would you want? Costco Apple Pie.

  • 1. Carter Clifford 2. Carter was the only name we could agree on. We both always loved ER and thought using Carter as a first name was interesting. We didn't have any idea how much of a trend it was. Clifford is the mn of the first born son for now 7 generations. 3. I threw it out there as a joke. Never thought it would be the only solid name. 4. Callum, Connor, Everett 5. No idea. Probably Kennedy at the time as that was the only girl name we could agree on. 6. I don't think so. I'm not sure I want two presidential children. 7. Not really. 8. Extra letters. Makes my eyes hurt. Bonus: none. I don't like pie...

    6. Would you use that name now if you had a girl/boy next? Yup. SO really likes it. I think that I would look at other options as well though.
    7. Did you run into any opposition over LO's name? Nope. Everyone just loved the name Lily.
    8. What is a naming trend that annoys you? I think that I just don't like made up names like Nevaeh. I understand it is heaven spelled backwards, but why? Why not just name your kid Heaven? Do you think you are tricking us into something? I dunno. It just boggles my mind.

  • 1. Your child's first and middle name?  Mikayla Jean
    2. Why did you choose those names? Any special meaning, etc.?  Mikayla has just been a favorite name of mine for a longgg time.  Hubby liked it too so that worked out.  Jean is MIL's middle name, we wanted to do something to honor her but her first name wouldn't work well as a middle name.
    3. Who first suggested LO's name?  Me!
    4. What other names were in contention?  The ever popular Isabella, and a few others I can't recall.
    5. What would LO have been named if they were the other sex?  I think we were gearing towards Connor at that point.
    6. Would you use that name now if you had a girl/boy next?  I don't think so, but who knows.
    7. Did you run into any opposition over LO's name?  EDIT because I read this wrong: my MIL told us she thought people would pronounce it "My-kie-la" from our spelling for some odd reason.  This was after she told us we should go with Beatrice or Gertrude or something kooky.

    8. What is a naming trend that annoys you?  The unique spellings I guess, although I know Mikayla isn't exactly a classic spelling either.  But crazy spellings just to be different is annoying.
BONUS: If you could have a slice of pie right now, what flavor would you want?
Some sort of fluffy strawberry cream cheese action.

  • 1. Your child's first and middle name? Luke Aaron, Ella Audrie, Thea Elisabeth

    2. Why did you choose those names? Any special meaning, etc.? Luke is a nice, strong name that wasn't really popular when he was born (but apparently it was here in MI), Ella was a favorite character from a books name, Audrie is my 101 year old Great Grandmas name, and Thea (pronounced Tay-a) is a name that Andy picked out, Elisabeth is Andy's late Grandma's name.

All names are also 4 letters and have meanings with Light in them - Luke is the Bringer of Light, Ella is Light and Thea is the Goddess of Light.

    3. Who first suggested LO's name? Luke - I did, Ella - I did, Thea - Andy did.

    4. What other names were in contention? There weren't for Luke. Ella was almost Audrie, and Thea had several other possibilities - Piper, Flora and Madeline.

    5. What would LO have been named if they were the other sex? Luke - Mackenzie. Ella - Howard (soooo glad she was a girl!). Thea - Graham, Eric or Troy.

    6. Would you use that name now if you had a girl/boy next? Mackenzie - no. Howard as a middle name. Graham - no, Eric and Troy, yes.

    7. Did you run into any opposition over LO's name?  Not really.

  • 1. Your child's first and middle name? (daughter) Taylor Ayleene (son) Thomas Andrew
    2. Why did you choose those names? Any special meaning, etc.?  Taylor was going to be Tyler from the movie Point Break - but we changed at the last minute.  Ayleene comes from I was hospitalized for m/s and we joked that I had an alien inside me - so we called her Taylor Alien for a long time - then realized my Gma's middle name was similiar so we switched it to Ayleene (no clue where spelling came from - my gma doesn't know either!). Son was Thomas after his dad and my step dad - his dad's family had alternating middle names Alan/Alvin and DS was supposed to be Thomas Alan but I knew there were too many Thomas/Tommy/Little Tom's and we'd call him by his mn - so we used the 'A' but my brother's middle name and we call him Andy now...my exH's family still hates me for breaking tradition.  Eff them.
    3. Who first suggested LO's name?  I came up with both
    4. What other names were in contention?  Taylor was Tyler for awhile
    5. What would LO have been named if they were the other sex? N/A I got one of each...
    6. Would you use that name now if you had a girl/boy next?
    7. Did you run into any opposition over LO's name?  See above re: son's name
    8. What is a naming trend that annoys you? u-neek spellings.  These kids are going to have to spell and pronounce their names for EVERYONE their entire lives.
BONUS: If you could have a slice of pie right now, what flavor would you want?  Hot Apple pie thankyouverymuch!

PS.  New baby is taking DH's name - DH is a Jr., baby will be III ("Trey") - it was important to DH - he's the last of his name which has a long family history (It jumped branches and started with Sr. again) People look at me funny when I say his name "Louis Herman Lastname" which doesn't exactly roll off the tongue but it honors the family so I'm good with it

  • 1. Your child's first and middle name?  Olivia Genevieve
    2. Why did you choose those names? Any special meaning, etc.?  Genevieve is my Grandmother's name.  And I just have always really liked Olivia.  Beautiful and will not be too cutesy when she's older, but we can call her Livy now.  And I like both Liv and Livy as nicknames.
    3. Who first suggested LO's name?  I did.
    4. What other names were in contention?  Olivia was actually the first girl name I suggested.  DH liked it.  Through the months other girl names would pop into my head and I would suggest them, and DH always said "we have a girl name."  Okey dokey fine with me!
    5. What would LO have been named if they were the other sex?  Colton.
    6. Would you use that name now if you had a girl/boy next?  DH already tells Livy, "When your brother Colton is born..."  So yes, we will use it.
    7. Did you run into any opposition over LO's name?  DH wanted to name a boy "Sean" after his brother.  I absolutely flat out refused.  We actually got a little huffy about it and for a few weeks couldn't even discuss boy names.  Then I finally told him, you can either work with me to agree on a name we both like, or when you leave the room I will sign the birth certificate and you'll be stuck with Elijah Peyton! (DH vetoed Elijah).
    8. What is a naming trend that annoys you?  Just the Yooneek and cre8ive spellings.  Don't do that to your child, please.
BONUS: If you could have a slice of pie right now, what flavor would you want?  French Silk!  Yum.  Dammit, now I want pie.

  • 1. Your child's first and middle name? Maxwell Nicholas
    2. Why did you choose those names? Any special meaning, etc.?Maxwell/Max we both loved, Nicholas is after my dad's (deceased) brother.
    3. Who first suggested LO's name? I honestly can't remember, I remember we were on a walk and I think it was before we had the big ultrasound, though we were both pretty sure it was a boy. One of us said Max, we both loved it. DH liked Maximillian but that was a little much for me. Thankfully we both liked Maxwell!
    4. What other names were in contention? None for boys, thank goodness we found this one!
    5. What would LO have been named if they were the other sex? I don't know, we never officially picked a girl name. Before I was pregnant we talked about Isabella for a girl because it was DH's grandmother's name, but decided it was too popular.
    6. Would you use that name now if you had a girl/boy next? N/A
    7. Did you run into any opposition over LO's name? We only told the grandparents ahead of time, that was one reason.
    8. What is a naming trend that annoys you? Hmmm, just the super-crazy spellings like everyone else. Or when people are super cutesy with the first and last name, like a "Candy Cane" I went to school with. Poor girl.

  • 1. Your child's first and middle name?  Darby Jayne
    2. Why did you choose those names? Any special meaning, etc.?  We had it down to two and the name just fit her when I first saw her face.  Darby is derived from Derbyshire, which we visited while we were in England and Jayne is after DH's middle name Jay and my sister Jamy.

    4. What other names were in contention?

  • 1. Your child's first and middle name? Lillian Alice
    2. Why did you choose those names? Any special meaning, etc.? DH wanted to name her Lily, I was opposed because it sounded to nicknamey for a first name, he eventually came back with Lillian which I liked better. Alice is from a very dear friend of mine, Alice in Wonderland and one of my favortite authors.
    3. Who first suggested LO's name? DH first name, me middle name.
    4. What other names were in contention? I liked Eleanor, Camille and Josephine, but DH would have none of it. He kept coming up with names like Heather and Jessica.
    5. What would LO have been named if they were the other sex? Elliot John Franklin. I liked Dexter a lot but DH really didn't.
    6. Would you use that name now if you had a girl/boy next? Probably.
    7. Did you run into any opposition over LO's name? Plenty, since I like older, elegant type names and DH likes more contemporary ones.
    8. What is a naming trend that annoys you? Besides youneek spellings, I really know way too many Jayden's.
BONUS: If you could have a slice of pie right now, what flavor would you want?
Lemon Meringue, please and thank you!

  • 1. Your child's first and middle name?  Charlotte Elizabeth
    2. Why did you choose those names? Any special meaning, etc.?  Charlotte was the only girl's name we really agreed on, and has a slight family connection (DH's g-grandfather Charles.)  Elizabeth is my middle, SIL's middle and a family name on both sides.
    3. Who first suggested LO's name?  I came up with it first and had it on my long list, which DH whittled down and then said he liked the best.  Elizabeth was his vote and it worked for me even though it means her full name has 11 syllables!
    4. What other names were in contention?  Georgia (likely for next kid if we have a girl), Alice, Violet, one other I can't recall, and a bunch DH rejected.  He wanted Ringo. :)
    5. What would LO have been named if they were the other sex?  John Richard after my dad and DH's deceased grandpa, respectively.
    6. Would you use that name now if you had a girl/boy next?  Yes.
    7. Did you run into any opposition over LO's name?  No, I think anyone who didn't like it was wise enough to keep their trap shut.
    8. What is a naming trend that annoys you?  Ridiculous spellings, especially ones that look like they'd be pronounced differently; Jayden and Nevaeh; dog names (Bailey in particular); nicknames as full names; biggest is names that are cutesy for babies/kids but not professional for adults.
BONUS: If you could have a slice of pie right now, what flavor would you want?  I already had pie today so I'm set (for the record small slices of apple and marionberry, homemade by my Aunt Pat.  Yum!)

  • 1. Your child's first and middle name? Emma Lynne Kealohalani
    2. Why did you choose those names? Any special meaning, etc.? Emma after DH's paternal grandmother, Lynne is my moms middle name and part of both mine and my grandma's first names, Kealohalani because I want my kids to have a part of their Hawaiian culture in their names.
    3. Who first suggested LO's name? DH when we wanted family names
    4. What other names were in contention? Jackson Thomas Kekoaokalani, Madelyn Grace (Same Hawaiian mn as Em's)
    5. What would LO have been named if they were the other sex? Jackson (see above) Sex was a surprise for us, so we went into it with a name for both.
    6. Would you use that name now if you had a girl/boy next? No. It's awful, but Jackson is my MIL's fathers name, who passed away last year and she has made my life a living hell, so I don't want to give her that pleasure. That and I hate the name Jack. It annoys me. I know that's what people would call him.
    7. Did you run into any opposition over LO's name? Nope. We kept our names a secret. It drove MIL crazy that we didn't find out the gender and we wouldn't spill names. It was fun :-)
    8. What is a naming trend that annoys you? I'm not a fan of Nevaeh and super unique spelling, but I don't mind the "Leigh" on the end. I saw a name on the baby name board that I thought was totally weird and then someone said it was "beautiful" so I thought maybe I was just weird. :-)
BONUS: If you could have a slice of pie right now, what flavor would you want? Banana Cream minus the almond slices. :-)

  • 1. Your child's first and middle name? Payton Jean, Ryan Lee
    2. Why did you choose those names? Any special meaning, etc.?  I really love unisex names for girls and thought Payton was super cute.  We got Jean because we initially thought we'd nickname her PJ, but that has never stuck. (turns out it was a family name anyway!) Ryan was just a name we really loved, Lee is a DH family name.
    3. Who first suggested LO's name?  I suggested both kids' names. :)
    4. What other names were in contention?  Nothing really for Payton, because we didn't agree on anything other than Payton.  DH looooved Savannah but it's NMS.  Ryan could have been a Nicholas but neither of us wanted to chance him having a nickname of Nicky.

  • 1. Your child's first and middle name? Audrey Catherine and Ryan Patrick
    2. Why did you choose those names? Any special meaning, etc.?  Audrey was actually our compromise name since we both had our favorites.  After she was born we settled on the compromise name and now of course we both LOVE it.  It is a family name on DH's side in Ireland.  Actually her first, middle and last are all in the top 100 of most popular names.  DH liked Ryan and I had my top choices.  He still was not named 25 hours after he was born and it was stressful so I gave in to DH's top choice.  Our last name is a girls top 100 name too.
    3. Who first suggested LO's name?  Ryan DH/ Audrey- me
    4. What other names were in contention? #1- Corinne (Cora for short), or Adleigh and for #2, Adam or Ian were my choices.  DH liked Aidan, Liam, Collin.  After he was born and still no name, we scoured baby name websites once again and narrowed it down to either Gavin, Garrett, or Ryan.  :)  We polled the family as they came to visit.  We named him 2 hours before we left the hospital.
    5. What would LO have been named if they were the other sex?  We didn't talk names until we knew the sex.  IF we have a 3rd, it will be a suprise so I imagine TWICE the stress with picking 2 names!
    6. Would you use that name now if you had a girl/boy next?  STILL love Adam.  I think Elise is a favorite girl name now.
    7. Did you run into any opposition over LO's name? Nope, we didn't know ourselves so no one else knew either.  lol
