S/O one and done..anyone planning a "big" family?

It seems like DH and I are in the minority, both on TB and in general, with wanting a "big" family. We want at least four. Four doesn't seem big to me, but I am one of six and grew up the youngest of four (my parents adopted my two younger brothers when I was 19). I can't imagine my life without any one of my siblings. We are all still good friends and they are the first people I call for advice or support, and I want DS to have that growing up and as an adult.

DH grew up with just a sister, and says he would like everyone to have a sister and a brother. Obviously, we know there's no way of guaranteeing that, but we'd have to have at least four to make that possible.

Anyway, are we really in the minority? Does anyone else want a large family?

  • I would like four but DH wants three.  I figure we'll just take it one at a time and re-evaluate after each kid :)

  • We said 5, and have now decided 4 will probably be our number.  We still do plan to "re-evaulate" after each kid, but I definitely see us reaching 4.

  • We want 4. :)

  • DH wanted 4 of his own when I first met him, plus my DD from a prev relationship would have meant 5 kids.  Now he has one of his own and my daughter and our furbaby and our household is non-stop.  He's now decided that one more might be more than enough.

  • I have always wanted to have four kids. The problem is that I had Matthew at 35 and I don't know if I have the energy for three more. I know that there are people who have more kids at my age but I don't know. I want at least one more and we will go from there.

  • We have 3 now, and I would love to have another, but I'm pretty sure we are finished.  I would literally be the little old lady who lived in a shoe.  We have 5 people in a 3 bedroom house.  Granted it is a big 3 bedroom house, but still.

  • We'll probably have three, but that's pushing it. DH would probably have more, but I think once we have three, he'll be pleased...hopefully :)

  • I grew up in a big family and I hated it.  The financial strain was too much.  If we could afford it, I'd love a big family.  I don't want my kids going through what I went through.  Still, I think big families that get along are really great and I wish it would have been like that for me.
  • I want 4, DH wants 3. We'll see how that works out. :)

  • My husband and I are only planning on having 2, but I would be open to a third. I don't understand how anyone can afford 4+ children, especially young children in daycare. We are going to have to do some serious belt tightening to be able to afford just 2 and we make decent money. Those of you that are planning on having a large family are you or do you plan to SAH?
  • We're in the 2 maybe 3 camp. If we do have #3, it will probably be soon after #2, which is still a ways off. At that point, we would hopefully have family to provide childcare.

  • I would love a big family. I'm one of four kids, but my parents are both one of six kids, so with all my aunts, uncles, and cousins, I've grown up surrounded by lots of family and would love to have the same for my kids. Plus I love being pregnant and having newborns, and I just know I'll be incredibly sad when we have our last baby.

However, DH is much more practical about it, so while I say I want four kids or, jokingly, even six, he'd be happy with just our two girls. Still, for now we are planning on three kids, and maybe, just maybe, he'll agree to one more in the future. I won't be holding my breath or anything, but I can always hope!

  • We have 3 now and I thought I would "feel" done after our third but now I am thinking 1 more. Who knows? I would love to have another baby and I have always wanted to adopt. I think when our youngest starts school we might become foster parents. There is obviously still a lot of maybe's in our future.Smile

I will admit with 3 kids and a dog and 2 cats, our house is chaotic. There is never a quiet moment but I honestly love it. On the off chance that I get a free afternoon by myself I am always bored with 1 hour because it is so quiet in the house. I can't imagine not having three and although it is overwhelming at times, I definitely enjoy every minute of it.
