Which detergent are you washing baby clothes in?

I had my shower this weekend, and now I want to wash and organize all the cute clothes we received.  What's the concensus on the special baby detergents?  I know Dreft is out there, and I've also heard you can just use a regular detergent but can't remember the brand/type.  So what are you using?  Any recs from the second time mamas?

Re: Which detergent are you washing baby clothes in?

  • I'll be using Free and Clear detergents - based on what's on sale/cheaper when I need to buy it.

This way I only need to buy one kind of detergent!

  • We use All Free & Clear for our clothes...we will use the same for hers.

  • I currently use arm and hammer detergent for myself and my husband's clothes because my skin seems to react to others with fragrances or added chemicals- I am not sure how best it is for baby clothes but I intend on using it for that as well-   Good luck :)
  • I use free & clear stuff anyway so I am just going to use the same stuff.  As long as the detergent is free and clear it's fine to use.

  • I used ALL Free & Clear but I have also purchased Tide's Free and Clear as well. They dont have a smell so I also purchased the baby dryer sheets that BRU has so I can get that clean smell.
  • If you don't use a baby specific detergent, like Dreft, then just make sure they are "free and clear."  Read the labels.  They will tell you if they are for sensitive skins.  there are multiple brands that carry this kind.  All natural is best.

ETA:  As someone with sensitive skin.  I find liquid is FAR better than powder.  For some reason, I break out when I use powder detergents.

  • Tide Free and Clear. It made no sense to me to do baby detergent for her stuff when her skin will touch everything in the house.

  • I use Ecos (natural laundry detergent) for our clothes and will use it for her stuff.
  • Thanks, ladies!  I figured that Dreft and other baby detergents were unnecessary and overpriced (like lots of other baby stuff!).  Looks like I'll be checking out the Free and Clear and natural detergents.

  • I've used All Free & Clear for years and will continue to use it for all of the baby's stuff (except for his diapers, we'll use Rockin' Green for those). I thought about trying the new Method Free & Clear concentrate in those little pumps, but I found some All Free & Clear on clearance an stocked up (they changed the packaging recently and needed to get rid of the old style, SCORE!).

  • I'm using Dreft, and then the Free & Clear Bounce to avoid static.

  • Both of my DDs get terrible eczema and their allergist told me it was pointless to use a seperate detergent for just their clothes because their skin will touch everything in the house AND that the super chemical smelly stuff we used to use for our clothes doesn't completely wash out of the washer after each load, so there's still a chance it will transfer to their stuff.

So, we use Free & Clear for everyone and Bounce Clear dryer sheets.

  • ALL Free & Clear Detergent.

This is what I use now.  I'll use Planet or RNG on the diapers.  I may eventually change all of our laundry over to one of those for simplicity.
