Soo.. my heating pad has been basically my best friend since my back has
been hurting.. I was talking to the NP at my dr's office about it
today.. and she said she doesn't recommend heating pads for pg
patients.. but i could use a warm towel.. I really thought heating pads
were A-OK as long as they weren't on your belly. I guess if its really that bad its too late now because i've been using one for weeks and sometimes those heat wraps too.
She did write
me a script for a maternity support brace thing.. she said it may or may
not help.. but i figure it can't hurt.. I am assuming since she wrote a
script for it that my insurance will likely cover some of it? Because
otherwise why couldn't i just walk into the medical supply store and buy
it? I hope they do because the ones that I looked at there were like
$60..

I heard heating pads and any of those icy/hot creams and patches are a No-No while pg...especially on the lowerback and belly. They can raise your temp and what that will do, I have no clue. So I just never used them. I sure could use one now though, the past few days my lower back has been killing me!!!
I think you should go to a chiropractor - why torture yourself? I have a good one that I went to while pregnant if you want a rec. He has offices in North Buffalo and Alden.

I went to one (2 actually) when I was pg with Eve and they were seriously no help at all and made it worse if anything. So I have very little faith that they will help me. So I am going to see if this brace helps before anything else. Its actually better than it HAD been.. I had almost 2 weeks that were almost pain free but friday night was rough again.

The stretches I started doing were really helping, and then last week I was in a lot of pain again so I went Friday to my chiro and I haven't had any pain since. I'm so glad I went. I think you should give it another shot, too.
I heard that too. I think they dont' want you raising your body temp. I doubt it would do anything, more of precaution (especially for people who really like to cook themselves with it). Did you ever read Jenny McCarthy's Belly Laughs? She was going in the jacuzzi every night and her OB told her not to... she totally freaked out, but of course it was fine.
well i did some googling and not that I SHOULD believe everything I read on google, but pretty much every website out there says that heating pads are safe because they are concentrating heat to one area, not raising your core body temp.. So it would be different than really getting in a hot tub or something.. Although I always take baths that are probably hotter than "recommended" anyway..
So I'm not gonna sweat it.. maybe I'll keep it on a lower setting or something from now on.

I think most things are fine in moderation anyway... and you know what, a little heat to naturally treat your back is prob better than choking down pain meds.
BTW have you heard of/tried those stick on back heating pads? THermacare I think... I rememeber I had some samples and they didn't seem to heat up much.. maybe they were getting towards their exp dates but it might be the right amount of heat.
Have you ever tried cold packs? I used to use a heating pad a lot and then I went to physical therapy and she told me I should be icing, not heating for neck/back pain. So I started doing stretches, along with 20 minutes of ice pack after that, and it really made a difference! I wasn't having much success with the chiropractor I was seeing and the physical therapist made a huge difference.
