Meaningful goodies to put in Birthday Treat bags? No plastic toys.

So I basically don't want to put a bunch of useless plastic tiny toys in the goodie bags for my sons 3rd b-day party.  It's basically all boys and I would like something they can actually use or cherish or something along those lines.  Any thoughts?

The theme is Mickey Mouse, but I don't need the items in the bag to be themed.

Most of the kids will be 3-4 years old.

  • Meaningful for kids or parents? If you want to impress the kids, go bouncy balls, toy cars trucks-  Little boys love meaningless crap.  If meaningful for parents, maybe a $4-5 gift card to a book store?  Burn a CD of several mickey mouse songs?

For my DD's 3rd, I made pinatas for the kids to take home and stuffed them with bouncy balls and random Dora crap.  The parents loved the pinatas best, the kids loved the crap- I guess that's the way it goes!

  • I don't like all the plastic stuff either.  What about books, puzzles, coloring books, stickers? If you wanted to stick with a Mickey Mouse theme, it shouldn't be hard to find those things. They might not treasure them, but they'll at least use them.

DS has gotten cookie cutters (he got a train at a train party and butterfly at a butterfly themed party) that we had fun making cookies with later.  We also went to a candy shop themed party and all the kids got the Candy Land game.  You can usually pick up some of the classic board games for fairly inexpensive.

  • DS's 2nd birthday was football themed.  The favors were plastic football shaped cups with curly straws that I got on clearance for $1 each (originally $5).  They took the cups home and I didn't do bags.  I'm not a huge fan of treat/goody bags because they are usually a waste of money.

  • why not just skip the goody bag?  if you are having trouble coming up with something to put in it, it seems like it might be a waste.

  • We did Mickey Mouse for DS's 3rd bday.

I got little brown bags at Michaels. Inside, I got plastic mickey party cups at the party store and filled them with homemade carmel corn.

I found small Mickey Mouse coloring and sticker books.

I found them at Target. I added a box of crayons that I got when they were cheap at back to school

Finally I made mickey mouse shaped sugar cookies

  • I found two-packs of playing cards (Go Fish, Old Maid, Crazy 8s, and Memory) in the dollar bins at Target; I put one pack in each kid's bag, along with stickers, a blow-out, bubbles, and a mini container of play-doh.

  • For DD's 3rd birthday party I am doing bags with a book, a sheet of Super Why stickers, a pencil, play dough, and little alphabet cookie cutters that they can use with the play dough. I will probably add a little candy and a few useless plastic things like a yoyo or something because they are my DD's favorite.

  • For DD1's 2nd birthday, I did bags with mini bubbles and Play-Doh tubs, individual Goldfish and all-natural fruit snack pouches, and bouncy balls on clearance at Party City. They were a HUGE success with the kids and parents.
  • Wal-Mart has an aisle of toys that are all inexpensive (at least the one around here)  but the toys are actually pretty cool.  Some of them are knock offs of Melissa and Doug styled toys.  The toys range in price from about $5-$15.  We just bought toys for DD's party this weekend instead of loot bags.  We got each kid a toy appropriate for their age (range from 1-6) and a bubble sword.  Total about $6 a kid.  Which is what I figure you would spend on loot bag goodies anyways.
