What do you think of YOUR name?

Re: What do you think of YOUR name?

  • I love my name!  When I was little I wished my parents would have named me Melissa or Samantha, but now I love my name.  I do have to spell my name for people all the the time.  Most people want to spell it Rachael, and it's Rachel.  I would definitely recommend it because it's not used that much anymore.

  • My name is Angel.  I've always liked it.  The only thing that irritated me was when people would ask if it was short for Angela (seriously, one less letter??) or Angie (which isn't even longer than Angel!).  I don't get that question much anymore but it used to annoy me.  It's kind of weird because I'm 1/2 Korean and I married a German guy who has a common hispanic last name (DH's grandmother married a hispanic man when my FIL was very young, that's how his family got the name) so now when I e-mail or fax something from work with my first and last name on it, I'm mistaken for a man.  All.  The.  Time.  I actually find this kind of funny.  Stick out tongue

  • I actually am Cassandra, I do go by Cassie with my friends and family. Most of the time people will spell Cassandra correctly but there are too many variations of Cassie, (Kassie, Cassy...etc.) so if it's for a professional reason, it's Cassandra but if it's personal it's Cassie.

I like them both but older people seem to have a problem hearing the ending correctly sometimes.  (DH and I have been together for nearly 3 years and his grandfather still calls me Cassidy)

  • I'm Jessica and I love the way it sounds, but I hate how common it is in my generation. There were SIX other Jessica's in my second grade class, two with my last name initial. I was therefore forced to come up with the "uneek" spelling of Jessey... And have held on to it since 2nd grade.

Nowadays, I would recommend it for someone else since its not so unbelievably common.

  • My name is Laura and I love it.  When I was younger, I HATED it. I felt like it sounded so old-fashioned, and I hated that I didn't have a nickname like a lot of my friends. I kind of thought it sounded boring.

Now as an adult I really love it. I think that it is classic, but at least where I am from, not at all overdone.  I know one other Laura (and have known a few others throughout the years), but I am glad I was never one of 5 in any of my classes.

I would definitely recommend it. I really haven't heard it used in a very long time, but I think it meets the criteria of being classic, not overly popular, easy to spell and pronounce, and not too 'out there'.  I hope it makes a comeback. :)

  • Nicole Ella

There is nothing really wrong with my first name, but I am not crazy about it. I was always the only Nicole in my grade until I moved in high school and I was then one of 6 Nicoles in my grade. I have since always worked with at least one more Nicole and currently there are 3 Nicoles (moms) in my mom and baby yoga class. I get really sick of being Nicole J.

Ella I love and was devastated when it jumped in popularity in the last 5 years. Ella was my great-grandma and I always planned on naming a daughter Ella, but won't now due to the popularity.

  • Amanda

Suprisingly, being born at the height of its popularity, I was the only Amanda in my classes.  I really like my name, always have.  My family calls me "manz", for a short time I got Mandi, and sometimes get 'manda.  But none of those bother me at all, my middle name is Lynn, and when I was young I thought it was the best that my name was like the instrument (Mandolyn).  I would definately recommend it!!

  • Christina Lorraine:-

I'm fine with Christina, pretty meh about Lorraine.  If I know you well, I'll let you get away with Chris as a NN (which is funny, because my DH is Christopher and goes by Chris), and my university friends all called me Stina (Steen-ah), but I'm never a Chrissy or a Tina.  I didn't know many Christina's growing up in the UK, but I've met several now that I live in the US.

My poor mother got saddled with Wilhelmina Georgina.  She goes by Billie.

  • I have the #1 most popular name from the year I was born, and it kinda sucks.  Once I hit high school and college, people pretty much just called me by my last name because there were so many other girls with the same name.

  • Lyndsey

I like it. I don't see myself being named anything different... Although in school this guy called me Chelsea because A.He couldn't remember my name. B. He thought I looked like a Chelsea. My middle names however I HATE... Lyndsey Gayle Constance. Constance is a family name and its not so bad. But I hate Gayle.... I would like it better if it was spelled Gail. It's a family tradition that my mom started and it is to name at least one of your daughter with 2 middle names. We have a Rikki Delane Lorken and a Jada Marie Brooke.

  • I always hated my name- Brittany.

There were always 5 Brittanys in every class I was in growing up, with 5 different spellings.

Then when I was a pre-teen, the Britney Spears association kicked in and stayed there through all of my teen years.  I've always asked my mom WHY she would name me such a common name and she said, "I hadn't met many Brittanys when I had you, I thought it was pretty."  (I was born in 1988, height of the Brittany boom).

I've given my mom a really hard time about it, but now that I'm an adult I like it and I kinda feel bad because she really did think it was a pretty name.  I should probably tell her I'm sorry for b!tching about my name all these years.

  • My name is Dana.  When I was growing up and found out that it could be used for a boy and a girl, I hated it.

It also gets annoying sometimes bc ppl will call me Diane, Diana or Donna.  It's not too popular with women of my age (late 20s) but it isn't unique either.

I think it's dated by today's standards tho.

I LOVE MY NAME - Sarah.

But, I have 3 major issues:

    1) My name doesn't really have a nickname so I always thought that when I gew up I would name my kids names that would have at least one nickname that they could use.  I was sometimes jealous of others' nicknames.

    2) I have to spell my name everytime I tell someone my name - or say "with an H".  Or people just spell it how they want.

    3) I was always one of many Sara(h)s in every group I have been in.  (That didn't bother me most of the time  - I just made sure I was the dominant one.)

Do you love/hate your name?  Would you recommend your own name to a new soon-to-be parent?  (I would definately suggest Sarah!)

I'm Sara and I think it sucks for all the reasons you mentioned. I graduated HS with only 180 people and there were 4 Saras. That's why when naming DD anything in the top 25 was immediately excluded. I don't want her to have to use a last initial. I'm sorry, but Olivia B or Emma D doesn't sound as nice IMO.

  • My name: Bailey

I love my name! I was born right smack in the Jennifer/Ashley/Jessica trend so back in the 80's it was great to have a name no one had ever heard before. I loved that it was different.

My only issue with it now is that I think names ending in the "ee" sound kinda cutesy, cheerleader like.

I wouldn't reccommend it because it's pretty trendy right now. It's not an original, unique name that it was back in 1981....LOL.

  • My name is Lauren.

The only thing that bothers me about my name is being called "Lor-en." My parents call me "Lar-en" and that's how I prefer my name to be pronounced. I hate "Lor-en."

  • Jaime

    1.  Always wish I had a nickname (even to this day)

    2.  Hated how it was spelled growing up, always had to spell it for everyone.  But now I love it because it's different then the normal.  But i dont' even bother to correct people anymore, when they say "is it spelled J-a-m-i-e"?  I just say yes.  why bother sometimes?

    3.  My best friend in highschool was named Jamie, so that was kind of annoying.  but never really thought to much about it.

I didn't love my name growing up, but i certainly didn't hate it or mind it.  My mom almost named me Jillian and i wish she would have gone with that.  but honestly, I think Jaime is a great name now for little girls since it's not so popular now!

  • Love my first name:  Courtney.  I was the only one in school growing up and it wasn't until college that I met another girl with that name.  My middle name, however I HATE.  My parents named me Gay and middle school was a total freakin nighmare.  When I got married, I dropped my middle name and took my maiden name for the middle.

When my mom criticized my baby name ideas for being too old sounding, I just looked at her and said you named me gay, you get no vote.

  • My name is Jacklyn Rochelle C_______.

I like my name, and was the only one in my class with it. Named after my dad Jackie, it was all good and fine.

I was given a lot of nn's from friends : Jack, Jackie, Jackalackalyn LOL Which didn't bother me. Loved it.

  • Well my first name is Randi. I hated it in elementary/middle school bc I always had at least 1 boy in my class that was also named Randy. So I would always get the whole "why do you have a boys name". Also I got asked why my parents gave me a "white name". So I didn't really care for it. Closer towards the end of middle school and into highschool I loved it. I had never met another Randi so I loved my unique name.

Only thing is I am always asked if it's short for something, thats annoying. So the past few years I just say yes it's short for Randella and proceed to laugh bc the look on peoples faces when I say Randella is priceless. Also I am always in email mistaken for a man despite my name being spelled with an "i" and not a "y".

  • My name is Ilyse (first letter is an I)...

And that's the number 1 con: whenever I'm using certain fonts, my name looks like it is spelled with 2 L's and that drives me bonkers. Finding nice font for our wedding invites was a major PITA.

People also constantly mispronounce my name and growing up that was a pain.

But I disagree with most people on this board who say that spelling your child's name in a not traditional way is terribly wrong and will weigh down your child. Of course the spelling on my name is not common, but there are other Ilyse's out there (just check out fb) and I love being unique.

I also HATE HATE HATE the spelling Elyse/Elise because it reminds me of Elsie the cow (from a book).

  • I love my name- Kathryn Maureen.  I was called Katie when I was little and now I am referred to as Kate by most people.

Being a child of the late 70's/early 80's I am going to say my only complaint is that Kate was a little too popular for my taste.

I would tell people to use this name. I love it.  I love that I have a professional name to go by- Kathryn, but I can use my nickname with loved ones.

Maureen btw is my mother's name- I changed it to my maiden name when I got married.

  • My name is Carriane (pronounced Carrie-Ann) and I never really loved my name until recently. Its dumb now but I was always sad my name was never on the little license plate keychains or anything else like that. Also, nobody can ever spell it and people always pronounce it Corinne. I like it now and want my daughter to have a name that's a bit different but not uneek. :)

  • imageLynsiBHM:

I always felt bad for the Jens and Melissas when I was growing up. They all had to go by their first and last name, or at least last initial.  I am trying to avoid that with my kids.  So, with my name, I liked that there weren't ever others in my class/ group, but I hate that no one ever knows how to spell it.

Lindsey, Lindsay, Lyndsay, Lyndsey, Lynsi, Lyndsi, Linsey...

I also hate when people assume I go by Lynn. No one calls me that more than once!  LOL

Overall I like it. It fits me.

I'm a Jennifer and I really like it.  I am jen, jenny, jennifer, nif, depending on when I met the person or how I know them.  It's never boring to me.  There were always other Jennifer's in my classes but it really wasn't a big deal to me. My name suits me.

I remember always loving the name Michelle as I was growing up.  It's a fine name (no disrepect to anyone), but I don't love it like I used to.  Things change.  I'm sure the names I love for my child will be "outdated" (even if still good names) at some point, too.  Just like I think "Jennifer" will be uber popular again in the years to come.

  • I'm a Jennifer and my name is never an issue.  A lot of Jennifers in my high school class - and two of my college roommates were Jennifers - but it has never really bothered me.  Everyone knows how to spell/pronounce my name, it has a ton of nicknames.   And my maiden name/married last names are unique and hard to spell, so at least I only have to spell one name for people!

  • Stephanie

I've never really liked my name. I think it's long and boring.

  • imageAmymichelle925:

My name is Amy and growing up I hated my name.  Mostly because I was one of many Amy's in my class.  There were 5 Amy's in my girl scout troop in elementary school....so a hugely common name.

The upside is no ever spells it or pronounces it incorrectly.

     I'm also an Amy Michelle!

I don't mind it. My patron name is Elizabeth and I plan on going by that when we move. Just feels more grown-up and classic.

  • I love my name Ryanne (ryan)

I do love my name, but don't like Ryan for a boy.  I have a nickname RyRy, which I love and all the kids (nieces, nephews, kids I watch) call me by it.

I do have to spell and pronounce my name a lot, but doesn't bother me any.

There are not that many female Ryannes (Ryans), so that is great.  Although I did not like to date any Ryan or Brians, which there are a lot of.  So that was bad.

I would defiantly recommend my name to parent-to-be:)

  • Colleen

I didn't like my name as a kid, but now I really like it.  I've met a few other Colleens in my day - I was friends with one in HS and one in college, but I think it could still be used as a baby name today.

  • My name's Yasmine, so I was always the only one in my class. [Even in primary school in Israel I didn't know any other Yasmine].

I was around 15 when I met my first other Yasmine and she was about 19/20 [again, Israeli].

I've met countless Jasmine's and even a Yasmin [who was around 17 at the time]. But no one can ever say it right! They either say Yas-meen, like Yasmine Bleeth [another association I don't quite appreciate], or Yas-mine. Or I get Jasmine, Yasnim, Yasmina etc.

Also, now it's a brand of contraception. You'd think my parents would've taken this hint, eh? Wink

Another association being some Princess or something? Mm.

Personally, I wouldn't recommend it. I think there's much nicer names than mine out there! Always wanted to be named Anna or Sarah, but got saddled with Yasmine. I AM learning to like it.. but I wished I would have had my sister's name [Danielle]. Though I'm sure she didn't appreciate being one of 4 girls in each class.

I don't mind my name.  Most people call me Kim.  The only thing that I cannot stand is the nickname Kimmy.  It is just awful!

  • My name is Amy - I really don't like my name... My sister and I made up new names for each other when I was young - she named me Amalia. I liked that better. There were always 3+ Amy's in my grade... I wound up working with 3 Amy's at one of my first jobs, so I went by Amalia. Now I work with another Amy, a Jami, and an Annie and we all get confussed with each other so I decided to go by my last name.

I was named after my aunt, but it was so popular... My MN is Lynn and people always used to call me Amy Lou and it always made me mad... I personally wouldn't suggest my name...
