I used a "leash" on my older daughter.  I hate it when people say I won't use one because my kid is not an animal.  If you don't want to use one fine, but don't act like I'm treating my kid like a dog because I'm worried about her safety.  DD was a bolter and in a crowd there was no way I was taking any chances with her!

I like the way you worded this.  I wanted to say something, but couldn't find the right thing to say without sounding snarky.  FWIW, my parents used a leash on me when I was little because I was a roamer/bolter.  My cousins also had them.  My H should've had one because he was constantly getting away from my ILs.  I have no problems using one for J if she needs it.

Thank you! The "leash" debate drives me up a wall!  I was worried when I first started using it that people would give me dirty looks, but I actually got a lot of compliments on how cute it was and one lady even told me I was a smart mom!

My UO - I don't like pictures of babies with food on their faces.  I don't know why, but they bug me.  I've only taken pictures of E with his first feeding and then I don't plan on doing it again until the first birthday cake smash.  (unless something irresistibly cute/funny happens, of course)

I think it is absolutely disgusting. I cringe when I see that or drool pictures.

I can't think of another UO. I rarely participate in these things.

I agree on the food but the drool sometimes can't be helped! Sadie is a drool monster! She wears a bib all day and I try to wipe her face before we take pictures but sometimes a drool cable still sneaks its way in, lol.

    Sadie is not impressed.

Agreed.  Totally plan to leash my DD.  She gets a little freedom to move without the risk of bolting into traffic or getting snatched.  Plus I don't have to break my back constantly holding her hand.  And anyone that thinks they will never lose sight of their faster than they could ever imagine toddler is being a little naive IMO.  It only takes turning your back for a split second.  As long as you aren't using a choke chain, its fine.  I'm also crate training (crib Wink)

I give up trying to get a ticker.  I have a DD that is 2.5 years old and is awesome.  Maybe I'll add a quote to distinguish myself.  Hmmm.  How about...

I think that those leash/backpack things for kids are ridiculous. (Check back with me in a year to make sure I still feel this way).

This!!! Are toddlers hard to keep track of at times? Yes. Should you keep an eye on them and be a good parent? Yes. Don't leash them....parent them!!

The fact that I've used a "leash" on my daughter in no way means that I can't/don't parent her.  It means that she is an active child and I'm afraid of her out running me in a crowd or bolting into traffic.  You don't have to use one but you shouldn't be so judgemental of those who do, you don't know their child or what's best for them.

  • I don't like the overuse of the word "epic". Like "epic fail", or "tonight is going to be epic". I kind of cringe, I have no idea why, maybe it is because I feel like I will sound silly if I say it!

I also hate anything mint. Mint shakes, cookies, gum.

  • I don't think having a leash on a kid means you aren't keeping an eye on the kid or being a good parent. It just means that the 3 foot tall person who runs fast won't get away in the half second it takes for you to blink. I don't agree with using a leash as an excuse to ignore your child, but as a secondary precaution, I think it's fine.
  • So this came up in another thread....

I judge people who refuse to treat their child's illness because they want to "leave it in God's hands" and "pray".

Prayer is great, God is great... but it's like praying to win the lottery but not buying a ticket. IMO, God created the intelligence of those who researched and developed the medications and procedures to treat x, y and z. That is how your little one will get better, along with prayer if you believe in that (I do).

And it sucks that the little one gets no say and may be in intense pain and suffering because of it.

  • I don't know if I'll need to, but if I do, I will have no qualms about using a backpack leash at the airport or in similar crowded situations. And whether I do or not, I don't judge parents who use them.

    My UO:

I don't like the movie Pretty in Pink. I always felt like Molly Ringwald's character was kind of a brat and not very nice to the people who care so much about her. And I didn't see what was so great about Andrew McCarthy's character, either.

That said, I love Ducky (or is it Duckie?) and I love other John Hughes movies.

I think destination weddings are incredibly selfish. The only time I can partly get behind it is if the whole family lives in different parts of the country so ppl would have to travel anyway. But even then, I still am not a fan.
I only think they're selfish if people expect everyone to actually show up.  If you want something small and intimate and only expect people to be there if they can truly afford it and want to be, more power to you.  But I do think it's selfish if you want a huge bridal party etc. and expect everyone to shell out for the trip.

I had a destination wedding in Jamaica. We made it very clear to people that we didn't expect them to shell out the money to be there. If people were able to afford it and wanted to join us, great! If not, then we totally understood. I didn't want people to go into hock for our wedding. We had 9 guests join us out of the 75 we invited. Bottom line for us was this -- we were getting married in Jamaica for us, not anyone else. I was 31 and my husband was 34 at the time. We weren't interested in spending ridiculous amounts of money on a wedding at home.

I think we are in the minority as far as DW's go though. I've heard of a lot of destination brides expecting 100+ people to travel and spend all kinds of cash for their weddings. We did not. We didn't really care if anyone came with us!

ETA: We only had a MoH and Best man in the bridal party. DH and I flipped the 1/2 the bill for both their trips.

I really don't like nicknames for pacifiers (specifically binkie/binky or paci, but I've heard suckie/sucky and others). I can't even spell them because they aren't real words! lol.

I don't really know why, but maybe it's because I don't like made-up baby-talk words. I totally speak in a higher voice to Amelia and other babies, but I feel like making up words is like assuming they can't handle the real thing or something! Another example is I've had two people call Amelia's fingers "finners." Bugs the crap outta me!

Agreed, The Land Before Time is horribly sad.  I still tear up watching that movie, especially when the song comes on.  Thank goodness for Petrie and Ducky, they gave some good laughs "I smell...I smell...DUCKY!"

This.  We had a destination wedding but it was a second marriage for both of us and we definitely didn't expect anyone to come.  We were going to just elope but everyone got upset so we went to Vegas instead.  Turned out to be the most awesome time ever.  People still talk about it in DH's family.

I laughed when I saw your siggy picture. DH got that TCP/IP onesie for DD for Christmas - super geek.

  • It amazes me that so many Mothers have a severe lack of common sense.  You see it on here all.the.time.

"It's 40? out.  Is it okay to take LO on a walk?"  FFS...yes, it is fine.  Put a hat on LOs head and dress him so he's warm.  Is it that hard?

"What consistency do I make my rice cereal?" (the eleventy billionth time the question has been asked) It says right on the friggin' box.

"When do I start solids?" Whenever YOU feel your LO is ready.  Some LOs are ready sooner than others.

"Is my baby sick?" Go to the fvcking doctor if you're concerned.

There's about a billion other examples.  Did your brain exit your heads when you had babies?

Maybe it's just me, but this mothering thing is just not that hard.

I don't have a problem with paci, but the others do bug me and I get that some people don't like the abbreviation and I totally respect that.

But I would totally be bugged too by the use of "finners."  Makes LO sound like a fish or something.

I should say that I don't mind when other people say, "paci," or others, I just don't want them saying it to my kid when she's ready to start talking! Then some people just make up some crazy sh!it...

I'm sure there will be more. My niece's cousin used to say "die-door" for  dinosaur when he was like 4...and his family, instead of saying, "You want your dinosaur? Here's your dinosaur," they said it exactly how he did. Tell me how that's helping this kid with his speech!!

Well yeah and many people have already put a call into their pedi office, maybe they just want to see if anyone else has experience with what is going on with their LO.

Though I suppose it's all about the wording. Kinda like the "Am I Pregnant?" posts back on TTGP/1st Tri.

I'm right with you there! I hate "paci" and "binky". Here are the terms we use"

    pacifier
    plug
    cork
    BSU 3000 (baby-shutter-upper-3000)
    cyclops

I also do not use the abbreviations "LOL", "DH", "DS", etc. I would never say "I'm laughing out loud" or "my dear husband" in real life. I say "hahaha" or "that's hilarious" or "hubs."

I'll use the abbreviations sometimes, but I've thought the same thing! We aren't married, so I use Fi, but on another site it's DF and I always thought, "I've never called him dear fiance!" He'd think I was crazy.

I do use LOL, but I agree with you. Besides, how often are people REALLY laughing out loud? I also hate capitalizing it. Idk why. I'm an "lol" person.

  • I would way rather have a mint oreo blizzard from DQ than a Shamrock Shake. I had a shake for the first time this year and it tasted like fake mint and cotton candy and there were weird chunks of maybe strawberry in it - think they'd forgotten to clean the machine before they made mine or something. No thanks.

I think the leash debate is the same as all other baby paraphernalia debates (cd or sposie, bf vs ff, etc) - use one or don't; as long as other people are looking after their kids it's not your business how they do it.

I'm a rare bird: I like almost all styles of baby clothes. I like onesies, I think 'little man' boy clothes are adorable, I have no problem with sleepers or stripes or smocking.  Not so U though: I hate writing / sayings on clothes. Other than my shirt that says "Good Grammar Costs Nothing" I hate it on adults, too.
