I know many have heard of the rumors, but it looks to be official now per the US Dept. of State. Adoptions in Ethiopia to drop by 90%. Thoughts are definitely with all the families currently in the process and the millions in Ethiopia.
Sad news... not altogether surprising though, given the months of rumors and all the allegations of certain agencies engaged in unethical behavior. It's a shame. My hope would be that the slowdown and closer scrutiny will run the unethical agencies out of Ethiopia -- and then with only the better agencies remaining, the government could increase processing a bit.
I'm not really a "member" of this board but this post jumped out at me because my husband is Ethiopian and we met while I was volunteering at an orphanage there. It's kind of ridiculous what is going on; basically they are using the relatively small numbers of "bad apples" to all but halt international adoption in Ethiopia, processing very few cases per month.
This of course is also going to "provide better resources for the children currently in Ethiopia" which is kind of BS. By slowing down adoptions so much, many more children are going to be remaining in Ethiopia much longer, and domestic adoption is not usually an option there (H's parents actually did semi-adopt two preteen girls whose parents passed away, but they're not really adopted, it's more like foster care I guess, but it's rare either way), so they're stuck in increasingly overcrowded and under-resourced orphanages. It's so silly and sad.

Sad all around.
