I know that it is common for one side to produce more than the other, but DD will nurse one side at a time at home and she gets full off of my lesser producing side. I can barely get 1/2oz from it while I pump. If it truly is producing that much less I would think DD would not be full just from the one side. I'm beginning to think it just doesn't like the pump. Is it possible for one side to do okay with pumping and the other to do poorly?
Re: is it possible for one side to not respond well to pumping?
totally. My baby prefers to nurse from the right side (I think because it lets down more quickly). But when I pump when I'm away from her, I consistently get twice as much from my left. You'd think because she definitely sucks more on teh right,t hat my right would produce more, from a supply/demand standpoint. But your baby is better than the pump. Go figure.
Have you tried compressions? I never get much from doing compressions on my right breast, but I can get a half an ounce or more from compressing my left while/after pumping.
Double check your tubing and pump parts first. Try switching sides with each - just to make sure.
I find the same thing though - one side does not empty for the pump as well (I do one sided feeding). If that's the last side he fed off of in the morning before work I barely get anything out of it all day. I have also had a plugged duct on this side when my pump went bad (I was part of the recall). I'm never sure what to do about this other than make sure it's the first side he eats off of when I get home from work, just because I know there's milk in there that the pump isn't removing!
