Can I get my steak cooked medium rare...pretty please?!

I've read that meat is supposed to be well done...quite frankly, I don't even see the point of ordering a steak that is cooked well done (yuck!).  My doctor didn't mention any restrictions on steak at my appointment when she went over all of the do's and don'ts, but maybe she just forgot to mention it.  We're going out to a nice restaurant tonight and I want the filet.  Is it bad if I get it medium rare (I could probably even handle medium).

  • You could just call your doctor's office and ask one of the nurses if you're worried - that's what I would do!

  • I would call your doctor. My OB told me everything needed to be well done.

  • I was told to have all my meat well done.  Medium well at the least.

I don't see the point in eating steak cooked that much.  DH cooked steak for me the other day and I ate about 6 bites.  It was cooked way too much for my liking.

  • I must agree with you, that steak is just not that glamourous if cooked over medium rare. Especially a nice filet. Being that I love steak I specifically asked the midwife at my appointment about steak. She said she wasn't going to say that it had to be well done, but that it needed very little pink in it. So basically medium rare is a no. I think it will be one of the first things I eat after the baby arrives. :-) I would look at the menu and see if there is anything else you want besides steak, otherwise you probably need to do medium well or more.  Sorry.

  • Ugh maybe I'll just end up getting pasta.  I'm sure my doctor just left that off her list on accident.  Booooo!  DH totally owes me a nice steak dinner (with a big glass of red wine) after this baby is born!

  • I must be a bad pregnant lady, because, to be perfectly honest, I would just order the steak and eat it.  Whether or not to call the doctor about that wouldn't have even crossed my mind.

  • Ugh.. not being able to eat rare steak is KILLING me! Of course it is one of my cravings Tongue Tied I agree that well done steak is like torture.. I have been debating on buying some steaks this weekend and at least make mine medium. It won't be the same though. I like the steak mooing on my plate when I order it.

This. I had a med rare filet last night. Didn't even cross my mind. Just one of those things like caffeine and lunchmeat... Up to you. I honestly don't even remember anything about less than well done meat... Can't be that important if your OB didn't even mention it.

  • Well.... I ate beef carpaccio while pg with dd last time... and I had ceviche last night... so I would say- enjoy your steak without concern, especially if you're eating at a reputable restaurant.

  • Hmm, learned something new today I guess.  It hadn't even occurred to me that medium cooked steaks were on the "no eat" lists ... I had several while pregnant with DS, and actually had a really tasty one last night as well.  I haven't seen it on any of the list I got from the doctor or my midwives.

  • I refuse to get my meat more well done than medium, even pregnant.

  • Well thanks a lot...now I am craving a steak!  I am surprised at how many of you ladies like your steak like I do :)  One steak cant hurt, right?  Ive been eating lunch meat...shrug.  I am trying not to be anal about what I can and cannot eat.  I say enjoy :)
  • Okay now you all have me re-thinking my decision.  I found this on American Pregnancy Association's website under "do not eat":

Raw Meat: Uncooked seafood and rare or undercooked beef or poultry should be avoided because of the risk of contamination with coliform bacteria, toxoplasmosis, and salmonella.

Soooooo, I'm going to get "medium rare"...that's not "rare" right?  It's a nice restraurant and I'm sure it will be fine.

    Thanks ladies

  • I love my steak rare! I am going to have to splurge every now and again at least on a mid rare/ medium. It is my favorite food of all time, I just can't give it up!

  • Only the surface of beef could potentially contain contaminants from the processing plant.  As long as the surface of the steak is cooked, there is almost no risk from any bacteria inside of the meat.

The warnings about undercooked beef primiarily refer to ground beef because of the increased surface area and potential for contamination.

I had a medium-rare steak tonight and didn't worry about it at all.

  • H bought filets for dinner. I didn't know they were on a list.

I ate a runny egg when we went out to eat Saturday night. I just found out that was on the list. Too many things to track.

Me too. I've had 2 medium filets from very nice restaurants since I've been pg this time. Yum!

  • I eat my steak medium and never considered to do otherwise... I eat a lot of steak. I'm not really a fan of chicken and we can only have 12 oz of fish a week... steak it is. Yummy! Its just one thing I dont feel the need to give up, especially if you get it from a reputable place.
