Has a movie ever really disturbed you?

DH and I had a mini-date night last night.  We went out to eat and picked out a movie at the Redbox when we picked up some groceries.  The movie I wanted wasn't out yet, so we chosen "Frozen" instead.  It looked interesting.

Afterward, I wanted to throw up.

Without giving away too much, the suspense and the type of "gore" was not at all what I expected.  Anyway, I have never been so disturbed by a movie before! I stayed up later just to watch some "Friends" and read a magazine to clear my mind.  DH gave me crap about it but I told him he was missing something (a heart, some feelings, etc.).

The silliest thing is that it's just a movie!  But the suspense and "what would you do" thinking did me in I think, lol.

Ever have a movie do that do you?  So I can steer clear of it?  Wink

Re: Has a movie ever really disturbed you?

  • Babel.  I actually had to stop the movie.  It wasn't suspenseful like a thriller or anything.  Essentially, a nanny brought the two children she watches to her son's wedding in Mexico because the parents were stuck in some country.  At any rate, the nanny gets run off the road and they are all stuck in the desert overnight.  When the morning comes the nanny takes off to find help, leaving the two children alone in the desert.

I still have no idea what happens but I will never forget the helplessness I felt during that scene. Parker was 6 or 8 months old, maybe, and I had some PPD issues but it was just a terribly anxious feeling that was completely all-consuming.  Ugh.  I still feel it to this day.

IS this the movie where they are stuck on a chairlift? I was thinking of watching that. Yes, many movies have disturbed me. Little Children, Revolutionary Road (Same director) and several more. I actually LOVE movies that have that effect on me!

  • Ugh. I was so completely disturbed by a movie with Clare Danes and Harrison Ford.  I would never have watched it on my own.  DH has a love for movies, any movies, and found it on while I was still sleeping one morning.  I woke to find it on and got involved for a second.  Then the disgusting, sick, world they were investigating unfolded.  It was about these sex offenders but it was even sicker than that.  It was evil and awful and my stomach still turns.  I can't remember the name, but I'll never forget the scenes.  Ugh - still gives me the shutters.  I remember that it was a Saturday morning and I had to go watch the dog show on animal planet and then pure, innocent, things for a few hours to shake the sick feeling.

Ooh I wanted to see this but read the book first.  The book was enough for me!  There is no way I want a more visual depiction of what happened in the book TYVM.

  • I have a tough time with war movies. Saving Private Ryan, Platoon, Full Metal Jacket, all those. I don't watch them anymore if I can help it.

Generally speaking, I'm more disturbed by some books I've read than movies I've seen.

Yes, it is.  It was good in the story telling sense with a few common sense "goofs" along the way.  I just didn't realize certain situations would be in it and that was hard...not for personal reasons (like I have dealt with it), but just general fears I don't ever want to encounter!

Holy moly, yeah that was a big one.  It made me really appreciate the safe little bubble that I grew up in..

Definitely.  I thought to myself afterwords, "Oh, my life is AWESOME!"

  • I remember starting to watch The World Trade Center.  I was pregnant.  I turned it off after just a little bit because I thought, "what am I doing to myself??" And I didn't watch the rest of it.

Also, the one with Will Smith and he was the only one alive in the city and everyone else was wild and rabid and came out at night.  I eventually turned that one off too.  I can still see this group of wackos standing around in a circle bouncing up and down in the dark, apparently eating something.  Weeeeiiiird.   But I wanted to know how it ended, so I looked it up :-P haha.

I read the book before I watched it. I should have stopped at the book, too. Monique's performance as the mom was just... there's no words. The movie was more heartbreaking than the book.

And The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. Anyone else see this one? I was bawling so hard.

As far as gory movies (think Saw) I don't watch slasher porn.

  • I typically avoid movies that I will have a difficult time handling. For example, I have never and will never watch a Saw movie. Nor will I watch The Human Centipede.

However DH and I (when we were dating) went to the movies and saw Open Water. Didn't know that it would end the way it did and totally messed me up to this day.

I get nightmares easily so I try to make sure to avoid anything that will scare me. I LOVE spoilers! I would rather know what's coming that feel that heart racing moment for anything.

    I also hate surprise parties.

  • I used to enjoy scary movies, until I saw The Ring. I was so terrified I literally could not sleep that night. I was in college and a bunch of us went out to see it together and I was screaming so much everybody was making fun of me. And one of my DH's fraternity brothers thought it would be funny to call me like they do in the movie and I swear DH said I lost all color in my body and looked like I was going to faint (DH was my boyfriend back then).

Also, The Exorcist. Uhhh...just thinking about some of those scenes makes my whole body shiver.

Also, The Eye 2 freaks me out to no end! It's basically about ghosts that lurk around pregnant women and wait till the moment of birth to "enter" the babies bodies. FREAKING SCARY! I'm pregnant right now and sometimes when I remember that movie I seriously get so scared I don't even know what to do with myself!

This was actually a remake of "Omega Man" - which was filmed in the '70's starring Charlton Heston. You're talking about "I Am Legend" - I've seen both movies. They didn't disturb me though.........

On a different note, sometimes I hate when they do remakes - it's usually not as good as the original. There are a few remakes that I enjoy though (Ocean's 11, The Italian Job)........

  • Hannibal was more than I could take. The only movie where I actually felt sick while watching it....dizzy, nauseous, had to put my head down etc. I loved Silence of the Lambs which was more suspenseful but Hannibal just went in the other direction.
  • 28 Days Later. I watched it at the drive ins with DH when we were dating years ago. I was so scared I crawled into bed with my sister when I got home. I think I was like 19 or 20! It is SO SO scary! Also the Pianist. It's one of the greatest movies ever, but so chilling and awful to watch.

  • Lots of movies. We don't see horror movies at all but I am disturbed by violence. We recently saw Stone with Edward Norton. That movie was just so messed up that I was disturbed for a few days. I never finished Monsters Ball. Apocalypto and 300 upset me for at least a week. I told dh I just can't watch anything violent anymore.

  • I knew better than to see Precious even though I wanted to.  The Lovely Bones was so hard for me.  It made me sick to think there were people out there praying on kids like that.  It scared the crap out of me.

The book that disturbed me was The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.  I finished it because I had to know the ending but it was so upsetting I didn't sleep well for a week.  They are making a movie of it that looks so good but I know I can't see it.

  • Eastern Kingdom.  We went to see it based on the fact that Viggo Mortensen was in it, but I had no idea what it was about.  Turns out, it was a hardcore mafia movie.  I walked out as he was cutting off some guys finger after having a threesome (where they showed everything).  I'm not sure exactly how that movie was only rated R.  I have started reading reviews a lot more carefully when I don't know as much about the movie. :)

  • I was really into scary movies until the Blair Witch Project. It came out my senior year of high school, and my bf and I went to see it in the theater right when it came out. I honestly had to sleep in bed with my mom that night. It probably wouldn't still have the same effect on me (12 years later), but at the time it really bothered me and I had to stop watching anything scary.

The most disturbing movie I've seen recently was Precious. It was just so raw, and you know there are kids out there in those horrible situations, which is what got to me.

I actually loved this movie lol! If it helps it did have a happy ending where the nurse adopted the baby.

I hated the movie the Strangers with Liv Tyler and the felicity guy. It was so sad, terrifying and hopeless. I don't mind horror movies where the people have a chance but that movie was so bleak! And the way they killed her boyfriend in front of her, UGH and still cannot get it out of my mind!

DH and I were trading off on picking movies, too.  I sat through the entire show with my eyes covered.  DH kept offering to give me his keys so I could go to the mall instead of watching it.  I hate scary movies and this definitely qualified.  In his defense, though, the previews did not at all explain what the movie was really about.  He is no longer allowed to choose movies.

Child's Play disturbed me to no end.  My heart still jumps in my throat anytime I even see a picture of that damn doll.  I slept with my sister for weeks because of that movie. That is officially when my hatred of scary movies started.

The Green Mile and Schindler's List are two of my other most disturbing movies.  I can't watch either one.

I'm glad I found someone that is afraid of this too!  I've asked others and they don't think it's scary.  All of the zombie/end of the world type movies scare me to death.  This is by far the scariest one IMO!  I have seen it a couple times since the first time and it still scares me every time!
