XP: Suddenly hates the bath, need help

Hi ladies! Ok so Gavin has always loved bath time, up until a few days ago. He suddenly hates it and screams and cries and tries to climb up my arm. Nothing traumatic has happened to him as only I or DH give him a bath (MIL on occasion) and would know if it had. I've tried sitting in there with him, and so has DH, no difference. I am open to any and all suggestions; anything to get my happy baby back :(

  • I moved DS's baby tub into the big tub (so he's not actually in the big tub, kwim?) and he screams bloody murder when I drain the water for some reason.  I just keep calmly reassuring him, but I'm not changing anything.  It's a bath...he'll get over it eventually.

  • Did you maybe have the water too hot or too cold one time? Maybe introduce new bath toys? Try a different time of day?

DD hates having the water poured over her head to rinse her hair, and one time she screamed  and cried, and so I hugged her and reassured her thinking I scared her with the water over her head. Very next time, she did the same thing, I then realized  I added to her fear by hugging her like it was something to be scared of. So I started laughing and being excited about pouring the water over her head and now she has no problem with it. My point is, maybe by getting in the tub or treating it like it's something to be scared of your DS made that association, like my DD did? Just a thought, I dont know though :)

  • This happened to DD as well.  We just cut down on the amount of baths and after about 2 - 3 weeks she went back to loving them again.  I don't know why she hated them suddenly and then why she went back to loving them again, but it was just a stage I guess.
  • What are you bathing him in?  Could he be getting uncomfortable in an infant tub (even sitting up)? DS has never liked baths, but we just got him the munchkin ducky tub and now he loves them!  I think he was just uncomfortable in the baby tub.

  • P went through this phase shortly after we started bathing her in the regular tub instead of her infant tub.  We bathed with her for awhile, which helped but it took a couple of weeks for her to stop crying/screaming entirely.  We make sure the water is warm, not hot and give her toys to distract her.  If all else fails, try showering with her.  A friend recommended it and I thought P would hate it more, but she tolerated it without crying.  It was great for days when we didn't have the time or energy to try a bath with a full on melt down.

Oh we also put her in only a couple of inches of water in the big tub and gradually added more as she got used to it.  Now she loves bathtime and splashes and plays with her frogs and duckies.
